DevCamp rockin’ the nest

By stevel stevel

Songbird is hosting a Songbird DevCamp this weekend January 19th & 20th at our office in San Francisco.

If you’re hacking on the Top 40, or are just interested in hacking on Songbird stuff in general and want a room full of like-minded people to hang out, eat, and drink with - then you’re invited!

Sat & Sun, 10a to 5pm. We’ll bring the building, power, wi-fi, food, drinks, and beer…. you bring the brains and a laptop.

In other top 40 news, check out the progress! We’ve got 11 completed, and 6 more in testing. I love that extension developers are picking things up, popping into the IRC channel, asking questions, and getting involved. The # of people in #songbird has grown by quite a lot recently.

Growing the 40

All the numbers are going up up up…
Between the completed, and in testing extensions (meaning most if not all features are working, just more testing and uploading are needed before being deemed complete) - we’ve got 14 down, with an additional 15 more being claimed or in active development. This leaves 16 left that are open and unclaimed.

The mathematically astute among you will probably note that those numbers add up to 45. Yes, the top 40 have grown to 45 with enough demand and requests to port additional extensions.

The newly completed extensions are the allmusic.com toolbar, FaviconizeTab, FlashGot, ScribeFire, and User Agent Switcher.

3 days in

By stevel stevel

3 days into our Top 40 project and we’ve already got 5 completed extensions, 4 more under testing, and 16 more in development or claimed. Not bad for only 3 days in!

We’ve even got developers looking at how to mod their extension to take advantage of Songbird features as a media player to extend it even further.

Everyone working on the top 40 is doing a rockin’ job, and we’re definitely getting noticed. Check out these four blog posts for a mere sampling.

I’m totally psyched we’re picking up all this momentum, and I’m definitely looking forward to our DevCamp (Facebook, Upcoming) in a few weeks when I can meet some of y’all in person.

If anyone is going to be at SuperHappyDevHouse22 this weekend — I’ll be there, and would love to hack on some Songbird stuff with people.

Top 40 on its way!

Wow, what an awesome initial response!

Check that out… we’ve already got 3 completed, and 11 more in development. Thanks to bard & sogame for getting xmpp4moz and Extension List Dumper ported so quickly! A lot of the extension owners have stepped up and are hacking away to get Songbird support in - but to answer bzoomer16’s question:

You don’t have to be the owner/primary developer of an extension to port it.

If you’re interested in helping out and learning some add-on development, drop me a line and let me know which of the still-open Top 40 add-ons you’d like to work on.

Kicking off the Top 40

By stevel stevel

Ninja Hero
We’re ringing in the New Year by kicking off a project for the month of January called the Songbird Top 40. This is an effort to port and update the 40 most frequently requested Firefox extensions to also support the Songbird player.

Short and sweet URL. Check it out - if you see any extensions you want to work on or help port, drop me an email at (stevel at songbirdnest dot com). I’ll be updating the list daily with status and updates as people chip in to help hack on stuff.

We’re going to be hosting a Songbird DevCamp at our nest here in SF, and anyone working on the Top 40 project is hereby invited (Facebook, Upcoming).

If you’re a Songbird fan and want to contribute, join the project! Check out the Top 40 project page, shoot me an email with which ones you want to help work on, and we’ll get you hooked up with an invite to the DevCamp, and put you in the running for some prize schwag.

Oh yeah. Did I mention there are prizes? ;-)
