Scheduled Downtime for Songbird Translate Site Today

Update @ 8:30pm: It took a bit longer than expected, but we’re back.

We’re making some changes to the Songbird Translate site today. We expect the site to be down for about three and a half hours. The plan is to take the site offline at approximately 3:00pm (2200h, UTC-8: view in your timezone) and be back online around 6:30pm.

The Songbird add-on developer community has been on a tear! We’ve been seeing a ton of great add-ons being published lately. In order to help new Songbird users dive in with a good starter set of add-ons, we’ve taken a page from our friends at Mozilla and have published a list of recommended Songbird starter add-ons, hand-picked by the Songbird team.

This list is dynamic, and you can expect it to change over time as we identify those add-ons with broad community appeal. Your participation on the add-ons site is important in establishing which add-ons are most vital for new users, so be sure to use the rating tool and leave a comment on your favorite add-ons. We use a variety of statistics to help guide the selection but the key metric is community activity.

Tip: Check out the list in Songbird to get recommendations tailor fit for your platform and player version.

Talkin bout Translations

We’re striving to make it as easy as possible for people to help translate Songbird and we’d like to hear from the community about what works best for you. Some of the questions we have are:

What features are most important to you in a web-based translation tool?
Do you prefer translating online via a web interface or downloading files containing all the strings used by the application and editing them offline? If the latter, do you have a preferred file format and do you use any existing tools to manage offline translations?

New: Updated Songbird Add-ons Feed and Add-ons Release Notes

We just released a few new features on the Songbird Add-ons site. With these updates, it’s a lot easier to keep up-to-date with the latest Songbird add-ons.

We noticed add-on authors keep a running ChangeLog in their long description fields. To accommodate this use case we added support for release notes to the
upload process. From now on, add-on authors will be asked “What’s New?” each time they upload a new version. The release notes for the most recent version will be displayed prominently on each individual add-on’s detail page (example). Additionally, a running list of changes will be available on that add-on’s version history page (example).

Since we now know what’s changed between versions of an add-on, we are offering a new Updated Songbird Add-ons Feed.

These updates, combined with the existing Newest Songbird Add-ons Feed, are great ways to stumble on new and interesting add-ons you might have otherwise missed.

Single Sign-on for Add-ons and Translate Users

In order to support upcoming integrations between our web properties and Songbird we’ve started to consolidate all of our user accounts (which currently exist across a myriad of backends). Our goal is to support a single user account that can work across all of our current and future services.

As a first step, we’ve just enabled single sign-on for the Add-ons and Translate sites. For existing users of these services there are two noticeable changes:

you are now required to log in using your email address instead of your username
logging into one of these sites automatically logs you into the other (and vice versa)
