If you’re impatient, or raring to grab the update, go to Help > Check for Updates in the Songbird menus to trigger an update; this will download 1.4.3 in all its purple glory!

We know some of you prefer the Gonzo Feather. Thankfully, we have an awesome community developer and Songbird Champ: boosh. He went ahead and made a Gonzo 2.0 Feather using all the UI enhancements we made in Purple Rain, but with the visual style of Gonzo.

So for those among our flock who find purple distracting, you can still have your Korn cake with Gonzo, too!

It wasn’t anything serious — just a UI glitch exposed during updates in which some remnants of the old Gonzo feather were showing up in the new Purple Rain feather, which made mashTape and LyricMaster hard to use.  If you’re interested in the full details, head on over to bugzilla.songbirdnest.com and read up on bug 19334.

Update (12/23/09): The Gonzo feather really, really did not want to go away; we fixed yet another Gonzo-related bug (number 19365, if you really want to know) and released Songbird 1.4.3.  Automatic updates will come out early next week.

We’ve just about finished wrapping up Songbird 1.4.1, but we’d like a few eyes (and ears) on it. Mind taking our beta build out for a spin and letting us know what issues you find? If everything shapes up, we’re looking to do a final release on Monday next week.

What’s new since Songbird 1.2?

  • MSC (Mass Storage Class) Device Support – Sync tracks (and playlists on compatible devices) to MSC devices. (Windows only, requires the MSC add-on)
  • CD Rip Support – Pretty self-explanatory, right? Lookup metadata from Gracenote, and rip CDs to Flac or Ogg (Windows only, requires the CD Rip add-on).
  • Purple Rain Feather – We built a new Feather addressing many of the issues/feedback we’ve heard from users.

Thanks for all the feedback on our Blessed Build. With your help we’re moving in the right direction! You don’t need iTunes installed to test this Beta but a little voodoo magic is still in order if you don’t have iTunes installed. You will need to execute the installer from the Windows command line (cmd.exe).

Songbird now lets you rip to FLAC, the highest quality open-source format available. FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec, and is the only one that is non-proprietary, unencumbered by patents, and has an open-source reference implementation. If you want to stay open-source but need to keep your files smaller you can rip to Ogg. We also now support ripping to WMA.

Not only do we support the highest quality rips on the web, we have also integrated with Gracenote to tag your collection with the right artist, album, album art, and track information.

Songbird CD Rip

We’re delivering the CD Rip feature to Windows first.  We generally develop for the largest platform first, and wanted to get that capability out without delay.  Mac & Linux are coming!

The release notes contain additional details about this build including a list of known issues.
