GStreamer is one of the media core that Songbird currently supports. Today, it is packaged with Linux builds only. On other platforms we currently support VLC (Mac & Windows), Quicktime (Mac) and Windows Media (Windows). We’re considering standardizing on GStreamer as Songbird’s default media core across all the platforms we support.

Here it is, bringing a little cheer before the holidays, your first official look at our latest features and improvements for Songbird.

Check it out and report your feedback and bugs. We’re not done yet, so expect some things to be broken. There are known issues currently with the Linux and Mac PPC nightly builds. Please use the latest Windows and Mactel builds for now.

Our core add-ons are now published alongside our nightly builds so you can follow closely our development.

Download the latest iPod and iTunes importer add-ons for your platform.

New features and improvements

  • Display panes that make it friendly for multiple add-ons to be installed in Songbird at once by allowing the user to define which add-on gets displayed by context. More details on these integration points in our developer center.
  • Improved user experience for the iPod including a new iPod Summary Page (requires latest iPod add-on).
  • Library support to return to the web location where a media item originated.
  • Bug free preferences/options.
  • Faster, smoother window resize.

  • Links in frames clobber the page (5981)
  • UI problems with the resizing and re-arranging of columns in playlists (6147)

iPod Support

  • iPod Touch and the iPhone are not supported at this time.
  • Cannot mount iPod with Linux Fedora OS (6200)
