Hello fellow birders,
It’s with great pleasure that I announce the release of Songbird v1.3 for Android. For this release we focused primarily on localizations. We now support 26 languages. Yowza! There’s also a boatload of bug fixes. Sweet!
As always, we really want your feedback and help. We are looking for any suggestions you have for the translations. If you find strings that you don’t agree with please go to our online translation tool and suggest better ones.
The online tool we use is called Crowdin. To submit translations you will have to request to be invited into the translation group for the language you wish to help with. You can request to be invited here. Logging in is easy using your Facebook or Google account. If you don’t have either of those you can create an account with Crowdin.
As usual, it may take a few hours for the Android Market page to refresh if browsing from your desktop. If you want to update as soon as possible, please view the page from your Android device.
p.s. Happy 4th!

SubscribeGreat work, love it, works great on my phone and tablet!
Also a suggestion, for Tablets, add the media buttons on the popup notification, like the google music app.
Hi All,
Good job but you’ve regressed a little on scrobbling.
In 1.3 you no longer broadcast stop events, or even start events half way through a tune
Maybe I should’ve tried the beta, sorry, I’ll be more proactive next time
Thank you for Android Songbird in French
@Curly
Actually, all of those events are still sent. What scrobbling app are you using? We test with SLS, ScrobbleDroid and Last.fm and they all work great.
@Aus,
I’m using TuneAnnouncer. It has a debug mode that toasts what events are being broadcast (or at least received by TuneAnnouncer). If I play a track, then all is fine and the scrobbles are received. If I press pause, then no ‘stop’ is received, press play again and no ‘start’ is received, so there is no announcement.
This used to work with 1.2 and it’s not a real problem, it’s just that TuneAnnouncer used the ‘stop’ message to stop the service and remove it’s notification icon (in the pro version).
(I’ve checked the default player and TuneAnnouncer picks up the pause/play events so it’s not a TuneAnnouncer problem.)
Here, Songbird sometimes starts to play alone on my Optimus One 2.2.1.
@Curly
We no longer fake all the events that the stock player uses because it was interfering with regular scrobbling. We use the ScrobbleDroid API to scrobble. If TuneAnnouncer supported that API it would work as expected.
@Aus
Thanks for the update.
Tune Announcer supports all four main scrobble formats, however if Songbird doesn’t send a stop event then it won’t know that you’ve stopped playing music and not unload itself.
It’s no big deal, but even scrobbledroid has a stop/pause event -> http://code.google.com/p/scrobbledroid/wiki/DeveloperAPI
@Aus,
Oh, and I notice you *do* send Stop/Pause events for ScrobbleDroid, so as you said, it works as expected using that, thanks. I must be going mad as I’m sure that wasn’t working yesterday!
Thanks for the release! Unfortunately scrobbling with the Last.fm app is still not working:

@Vince
That issue is fixed in this release. Just make sure you have the latest last.fm app and everything will work as expected.
Hey,
Brand new Android user here and I stumbled onto this today! so far, I’m loving it, but I’m having an issue where the home screen widget becomes unresponsive and I have to remove it and readd it to get it to go again. I haven’t played around with it enough to figure out what might be causing it, so I’m just getting it out there for now. Will post back if I can reproduce it.
@Aus
I’m sorry but the issue is not fixed in 1.3 (I’m using Last.fm 1.8.4 which seems to be the last one)
@Vince
Have you enabled scrobbling using the scrobble droid intents in the last.fm app? It works great for us so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for you. Are you also sure you’ve updated to 1.3 from the Community Beta?
@Aus
Yes all the APIs are enabled and I’m using the 1.3
I will install it ringht now
@Vince
That’s really odd. It works great for us on all of our test devices we use. I’m not sure what else we can do without being able to reproduce the issue ourselves.
One last thing you can try is clearing out the data for Songbird. You can do this by going into Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Downloaded -> Songbird and pressing the ‘Clear Data’ button.
Scrobbling through last.fm works great for me.
Re the widget problem. It seems to happen when a song has been stopped/paused and Songbird eventually falls out of the background (if my understanding is correct?). Then when you try to play the song again (via the widget) nothing happens, then when you reload songbird, the widget does nothing (i.e. doesnt update with the current playing song and the controls dont work).
Also, a request if I may? When there’s no song playing and it’s not in the middle of a playlist, would it be possible for the play button the widget to start a “Shuffle All Songs” playlist??
Just to clarify, I’m running Gingerbread on a Samsung Galaxy S2
@Aus
Thanks for trying to help me, your last idea wasn’t the solution. I’ve installed another app to scrobble which works with Songbird.
@N
Does same thing with widget on my sgs2 too – as soon as songbird leaves memory, widget becomes useless.
Btw, sometimes when I have songbird playing for a while and then try to access it, all what happens is that screen freezes for like 5 seconds, then it goes black, though you can still see notification bar (and music is still playing). Then I have to kill Songbird manually to be able to use it properly again. Ever happened something like that to you?
@phdr_vrba
Nah never seen that happen! I’ve played music for a good few hours at work and it all seems hunky dory. Just so long as I don’t stop it for too long
Glad I’m not the only one having that issue though!
Does Songbird remember the point play/pause positions within an audio file?? For example, in podcasts. If it doesn’t then it would be a really good to have feature
Great work on this wonderful player.
Is it possible to decouple the Facebook and Flickr integrations (buttons and all) ? As they should not be coupled with the code of the player; it should be done using plug-in interface.
So, an option to remove/disable – meaning no buttons if you are not using them – should be provided in the settings, like Last.fm scrobbling,
[or even better: you should be able to download all of these by connecting from settings to songbird server, so that for people not using them they should not exist]
PLEASE : Always post the .APK when doing a release
.
There’s a lot of people out there with no WiFi connection but still wants to try your app.
From what I’ve seen, it’s plain awesomeness
.
It would be really helpful if you could specify a containing folder for synced music on the SD card in the desktop app since having tons of folders for artists in my android root is inconvenient.
Also being about to display media by album artist instead of just artist in the android app would rock, since I have a lot of compilations and the artists from those make finding the artists I want difficult.
Otherwise great work!
Just downloaded songbird app onto my Droid 2… and so far liking it.. but I have two requests
1. Sync from Songbird PC to the android is Great. Would it be possible to create playlists on the Android from the desktop app, and modify those playlists (even those created on the android app). Yes, this is very iTunes-like funtionality, but it would make creating and editing playlists much much easier.
2. Does the Lock Screen need to take up the whole screen? The default music player uses about as much space as the widget, and I can still see the time.

@Frank Fella
The next release of the desktop client will be much better about placing your music in the right place and also allow you to override the default location.
Album Artists are a little more complicated but it’s something we’d like to do in the future, we’re just not sure when
@TWAFE
Yes. Playlist edits done on the phone and on the desktop should sync with each other in the next release of the desktop client.
We opted for the fullscreen lock screen widget because it feels better to use. Is there a particular reason why you don’t like it other than it being big? Is it preventing you to see the clock or something like that?
@Gianmarco Lorenzi
The next release of the Android client will include that feature.
I like the songbird desktop client. Thus, I tried the android app. However, I wonder why there ain’t support for FLAC — this is particularly disappointing as the desktop client does not (for various good reasons…) allow to rip CDs as mp3. Is FLAC support on the roadmap for the andoid app? Is there a roadmap somewhere to be seen?
Otherwise, great job!!
Hey guys, from Chile to Songbird for android.
Some users mentioned something about the problem with songbird to remember the last point of the song that was playing. I want to mention something similar and also becomes annoying songbird not remember the last song that was playing then I can resume the playlist at the point that I was listening to the last time.
Keep going, good job
Is there some simple enough way to figure out what may be causing those freezes I have? I think they happen quite less often since 1.3 final, but I still occasionally have to kill it manually.
About 2 weeks ago I turned off the Widget Locker to check out if that would stop the freezes, but I eventually ended up with frozen player again. There is just one difference – with widget locker on, when I tried to unlock directly to the app, for the first 6 secs I saw the lockscreen. Now I get to see the Songbird background image instead.
I also kinda wonder whether this can have anything to do with changes in connectivity (or wireless tethering) stuff – when I try to get it freeze at home (wifi) or at work it can play music for hours without any problems. But on my way from/to work (30-40 minutes) it freezes like 4 times out of 5. Hell, I would even say it usually freezes more often in the vicinity of my home, but that is more of a hunch…
Anyway, I’ll change my launcher from GO EX to stock TouchWiz for now as well…
