Songbird for Android — v1.2 Now Available!

By Aus Aus Permalink

Hello fellow birders,

We know some of you have been dying for an update and here it is! We tried to incorporate as much of your feedback as possible and we hope you’re pleased with the results. Here are some of the features you’ll have access to if you update to the latest (and therefore greatest ;) ) version.

  • More responsive navigation and transitions
  • Landscape support
  • Better headset controls support (single, double and triple press support)
  • Reduced memory and CPU usage

We were also busy squashing bugs. As always, please let us know what you think and what you’d like to see next. :)

We already know that we’ll be localizing the application in more than 20 languages. We’ll be requesting some help once we’re ready for community translators to jump in. Stay tuned.

As usual, the Android Market website will take a few hours to update but you can upgrade directly from your phone right now.

Both comments and trackbacks are currently closed.

    How about headset plugin play and disconnect pause features like PowerAmp has? I really like this feature in PowerAmp but prefer to use SongBird, which is probably the best, (simple and just works) music player on Android.

    I’d really love to see mono output. I often walk around with only one earbud in so I can hear what’s going on around me still. Only getting the right channel is not ideal, but works.

    @cuz84d

    Songbird already automatically pauses when you disconnect your headset or headphones. We could however refine that feature so that if they are reconnected within a certain amount of time we resume playback automatically.

    @Shawn Wilsher

    Interesting! I happen to do this myself when I’m riding my bike as well. Would be a cool power user feature for sure!

    Love songbird but would love a way to change songs from the notification bar. Also a few options for Widgets 4×2 and 4×4 would be nice. Wireless sync with the desktop program would I hope is high on the list.

    Good work on everything btw.

    star rating and playcount syncing with PC? still waiting for somebody besides apple to implement this =\

    The new release is looking great. Seems snappier and more responsive.

    The transition between landscape and portrait is pretty neat, but a little choppy…

    Several things that would be nice:
    Addons (specifically a lyrics function)
    More interaction with desktop client
    Feathers?
    Delete capabilities?

    As always, thanks for the hard work.

    Songbird for android really needs larger buttons as its pretty much unusable on my LG Optimus T (HVGA 320 x 480 pixels).

    Winamp for android has a done a much better job on their UI as it feels and looks much better on smaller screens.

    Next great feature to add will be WIFI sync with Songbird (no need USB plug anymore to sync)

    Loving the landscape support. When you have the tray up with the track detail there is an awful lot of empty “white space” to the right of the song title/artist/album info… seems like there would be room to make those bigger so that they would be easier to see. I have my phone in the dock on my desk out of the way and I can barely read the artist and album.

    Awesome update… good job to all involved.

    Also, the duplicate library problem on my Nook Color seems to have been fixed. Huge thanks there.

    Looking pretty good. Where should the bug reports go? I don’t see the product on bugzilla. Before I forget:
    - If you play a track and delete it (e.g. via the stock music player) while it’s still playing, the lock screen and the main app screen breaks. (The widget is still okay, probably because it hasn’t noticed yet.) Actually, I think I managed to break it in a way that requires the user app data to be wiped… it returns to a blank screen now.
    - While the lock screen widget is up, the volume buttons don’t do anything. They work fine while the screen is off, while the normal authentication screen is up, and when the phone is unlocked.
    - Enhancement request: give me a way to delete the currently playing song (or otherwise never play it again), please.

    +1 for ratings sync back to desktop!

  13. Andi May 25, 2011 11:02 pm Permalink

    I would love to see FLAC to be supported (in particular as Songbird for Desktop cannot rip CDs to MP3 (at least by default)) …

  14. Asrail May 26, 2011 4:38 am Permalink

    Is it auto-resuming when a call is finalized?
    It stops in case of a call, but won’t resume latter. The sony ericsson media player for x8 and playeramp resume automatically.

  15. Aus May 26, 2011 7:40 am Permalink

    @skyyo

    Yes, 4×2 and 4×4 widgets are planned. Wireless sync is also something that’s planned.

    @jrr

    Yes, we’ll be supporting that at some point I just can’t tell you when exactly right now.

    @Gazoo

    We’re exploring providing better sized buttons for small screens.

    @katana346

    We’re unlikely to provide the level of extensibility that you find in the desktop client today in the Android app but we do want to do something to enable add-ons. There are no solid plans for this yet but we’ll keep everyone posted.

    Delete capabilities are coming. Feathers are planned as well.

    The rotation animation works best on 2.3.x phones so a little choppyness is expected for phones running 2.2.x or lower.

    @Mook

    Bugs can go into comments or here:

    Killing the Songbird processes using a task killer should make it work again. It’s somewhat of an edge case to go and delete the file that’s playing in a different app and come back expecting it to work.

    Oops, volume buttons should work when the lock screen widget is up, that’s a bug. Will be fixed in the next release.

    Deleting the currently playing song and deleting songs in general is something we’d like to provide as a feature via context menus but I’m not sure when we’ll get to that.

    @Andi

    You can rip to ogg vorbis in the desktop client and it’s a supported format on Android.

    @Asrail

    We do not resume automatically after a call has ended because many people will disconnect their headphones for example when they take a call and resuming right after they hang up ends up being not terribly useful. There are other cases too where you wouldn’t want to auto-resume. It’s only in the ideal scenario that you’d want to auto-resume. That being said, we’d consider an option to enable that if we see enough requests for it.

  16. Vincent May 26, 2011 7:55 am Permalink

    Even if I like the landscape format I think it would be interesting to have the possibility to disable autorotating (as in some other apps).

  17. Pepso May 26, 2011 1:22 pm Permalink

    Hi Andy!

    Thanx again for thw great update!

    As I read above, yes, you can convert flac to ogg, but…
    Album art of ogg is not supported!

    You know I told you this since the beta app…
    When will my wish come true?
    :-)

  18. Aus May 26, 2011 7:12 pm Permalink

    @Vincent

    That’s a great suggestion. We’ll consider adding that option in the near future.

  19. Mook May 26, 2011 10:51 pm Permalink

    @Aus:
    Yeah, not dealing quite that well with things disappearing under you is a reasonable bug; of course, the only reason I had it playing was so I could double check the metadata on the track while I went to delete it :p So yeah, having that built-in would solve that problem (for me anyway) as well.

    Please consider this another vote for auto-resume, too; I was talking through the headphones+mic combo thingie that came with the phone. It makes me look ridiculous, but it works :)

  20. Nick May 27, 2011 3:10 am Permalink

    I have had multiple occasions where the homescreen widget does not update when I use my Bluetooth headset to play music.

    I also have a suggestion: I’d like a widget with functional play/pause, etc buttons in the notification menu.

    Keep up the good work!

  21. Shawn Wilsher May 28, 2011 8:27 pm Permalink

    I seem to have an issue where I hold down on a song, and select “Add to playlist…” and select the playlist, and it says it’s added, but then I go to the playlist and it isn’t added. I haven’t figured out how to reproduce this every time, but it’s really annoying when I do hit it (and it’s happening every time for me right now).

  22. Scott Bae May 29, 2011 10:24 am Permalink

    Love the update to the android app, much needed ability to display in landscape mode. But I also second the suggestion for wifi sync. Love Songbird.

    hi,
    first I’d like to thank you for making Songbird for Andorid. From all the music players I have tried this is the best looking and actually the only one I have no problem navigating in.

    That said, I did run into several bugs/isssues (sgs2, stock 2.3.3):
    - the widget sometimes doesn’t notice songbird is already playing something – so it either does nothing, or starts playing some music on its own (= two songs play at once… I think that happened when I pressed the top part of the widget)
    - Also, sometimes when I unlock the phone (I use Widget Locker, the lock thingie in songbird is turned off) songbird seems to stop drawing itself. Or something like that. I only get black screen with no reactions to input instead of jumping into songbird from unlock. I can use home button to get to homescreen and attempt to enter Songbird through, say, a homescreen shortcut, but at that moment display image “freezes” and I have to press the home button again (and ultimately shut down songbird manually to be able to use it again).
    - I can’t open and/or longpress on any item, that is the only item in the list and contains/represents a single song (works in search results though). Instead of context menu the song starts playing. Sure, I can always go higher in the hierarchy and add stuff to playlist from there, but it is annoying to do so.

    As for the features I’d appreciate those:
    - Bug-free 4×1 widget :) Maybe also Phantom Music Control support, though thats probably on the other guy… And definitely player controls in notification area.
    - Ability to auto-tag songs, also the ability to auto-search and download the album art for the songs.
    - Lyrics or even karaoke thingie would be a nice extra.

    I was pretty psyched about this app until I tried to sync my DroidX to the laptop. This site http://android.appstorm.net/how-to/music/sync-those-melodies-with-songbird/ indicated I should see the phone when it’s attached. But no luck. I set the phone to Charge Only as indicated on the phone, but still no luck.

    Any support here? Instructions?

    Before I answer a few questions that have been posted I wanted to take a moment to apologize for the slowness in responding. It’s been a little crazy over here planning and working on the next release. Thanks for being patient with us.

    @Nick

    Hmmm, we’ve never seen that happen here but we’ll keep an eye out for it. Hopefully we can figure out what’s going on before the next release is out.

    @Shawn Wilsher

    Doh! Sorry about that. Totally fixed for the next release.

    @Scott Bae

    Another +1 added for WiFi sync. :)

    @phdr_vrba

    Thanks for the bug reports. It’s super helpful to know what kind of problems people are running into in the field. The long press issue for lists with one item should be fixed in the next release. We’ll see what we can do about the other problems. Hopefully we’ll sort them out too.

    Metadata fixing and album art download are both planned but we haven’t slated which release they’ll go into yet.

    Added another +1 for notification area controls :)

    @Joe

    You’ll want to make sure your phone is mounted in ‘USB Mass Storage Mode’ or ‘PC’ Mode. Not sure what it’s called exactly on the Droid X. That should mount the SD card to the computer and allow Songbird to sync to it.

    the songbird widget works when it feels like it. usually, tapping the buttons does nothing even after opening songbird and playing a song. otherwise, great player.

    i had the problem on my stock froyo and still having it on darky’s 10.1 gingerbread base. samsung galaxy s i9000 international.

    thanks

    Do we have any idea if Google Music will be accessible via third party apps? I haven’t seen anything about that but it would be interesting.

  28. divor Jun 8, 2011 8:31 am Permalink

    Dudes. When you sync devices through songbird, it should create some kind of top level folder first, not just plonk all the 100s of artist folders on the highest level. Impossible to find my stuff between the mess afterwards. So I deleted it, although it didn’t really delete it, as the directories and songs disappeared, but there was still some 5GB worth of ghost data (‘other’) corresponding with the deleted size of my library. So I had to pull all my useful data (pics, movies, docs, pdfs, etc) off, then erase all USB data on the Android and am now re-syncing with a custom directory structure that starts with the sample rate, as this only produces three or so top level folders, which is manageable (but an admittedly ugly workaround).

    Phone is Nexus S, latest Android, Songbird also latest version, on Mac OS X 10.6.7

    Cheers

    Songbird has become my standard music app. Now I’m waiting for VLC to be released so that I can deinstall Doubletwist…

    One small thing: the background picture is being scaled wrong behind the songbird lock screen. Nothing serious but my wife seems to be a little squeezed… ;-)

    Thanks for this great app!

    I have the following problem with my Samsung Galaxy s2: when ripping music from a CD into ogg files I cannot transfer them to the device. Although I see the device name in the ‘add to’ menue I cannot click on it. that only works with mp3 file.

    Is there a way I can make this work? thanks for your help!

    Hi,
    Tks for the great app!

    Would like to see folder selection next to artist or album selection (i have my audio books and my music all mix up). If I could separate them I would be awesome.
