Songbird 1.10b1

By ali ali Permalink

Hello, desktop friends! We haven’t had much to talk about for a while, but now we have some shiny new functionality to share!

The huge project we’ve been working on for the past few months is two-way synchronization for devices. We decided that, since we were making some significant changes already, we’d take the opportunity to address some of the usability issues in our previous device sync implementation. To that end, our infinitely skilled team of bird surgeons have successfully completed a full transplant of Songbird’s device sync infrastructure. This was a major organ transplant for our little guy, but he’s sutured up and ready to roll.

Download the beta and consider checking out some release notes before you get started. Perhaps you’d also like to take this opportunity to back up your profile!

The biggest change that many of you will notice right away is that we’ve stripped the product of the auto/manual sync distinction.  You can now manage the media on your device using both drag-and-drop actions *and* the sync button. The sync button will no longer delete media from your device, and the bird’s smart enough to ward off duplicates when you start mixing and matching your device transfer methods.

The other huge change is, of course, the addition of two-way sync. You can now easily pull tracks off your portable device and into your main Songbird library. Those tracks will get copied to your local machine in the process, where they will be organized by Artist and Album in your default Music directory.

One of our chief goals in this redesign was to make a simple, intuitive interface, one that gives you total control of what music you take with you on your device and what music to keep in your Songbird library. Your music is probably scattered around and sourced from a lot of different places: your home machine, your work machine, blogs, music stores, your friend’s machine, or even your friend’s phone. Our goal was to give you a way to get all of that music into one central location on your desktop and to give you the tools you need to carry some or all of that music with you wherever you go.

Having said all of that, this is still a beta! Back up your data, consider starting out with a new profile, and don’t be surprised if things go a little sideways.  Do let us know about your problems, though! We have two delightful opportunities for doing so:

Happy syncing!

What about the iTunes sync? Is that working better yet? My iTunes sync STILL doesn’t work correctly.

@Isaac: Songbird’s only going to export items that are new to your library, not the entire library. Is that the part that’s not working for you? It looks like the crash reported in that Get Satisfaction post was resolved.

@Ali -please, update the songbird roadmap

    This is outdated

@Ali: Yes that’s the problem. Songbird exports some songs to iTunes, but not others. As a result, my iTunes doesn’t have all of the songs that my Songbird does. There should be a way to do a complete refresh of the sync to export the entire library to iTunes. It doesn’t make sense to just export new songs if the old ones weren’t synced in the first place. Any ideas for a workaround on my end until you guys figure out a fix?

@Gazouillis your blog is acting like you are working at POTI…which is not the case, also here is a more simple french post about this release :

    @antoine and @gazouillis:
by the way, don’t you think there’s one too many Songbird blog in France?
There a lot of insteresting stuff on both your blogs, really. But also some redundancy (particularly when it comes to translating Poti’s blog entries).
So why wouldn’t you join your efforts in a single blog? I’d glad to participate to that one :)
    What do you think?
Français, encore un effort, comme dirait le divin Marquis ;) !
    Bon dimanche

Yahooo! Very glad to hear about progress on the desktop version, and it sounds like this synch is pretty darn powerful!

I’m not gonna have a chance to try it … I’ve got to stick with my current version until after a festival thingy in a couple of weeks, where my netbook will be doing a lot of duty as a music machine for our camp. Sadly, I have to boot into Windows, which is so much slower. Wah.

I do have a question, though, which I think is sync-related. Since songbird no longer manages the directory/file, when I add NEW music, I kinda have to put it in the existing directory structure (which is /MP3/artist/album/song.mp3). And when I want to add this music to Songbird’s playlist, I have to dig out wherever I put that music, and add it in, one directory at a time. Kinda laborious and annoying.

Can I now ‘Import Media’ from my /MP3 directory, and have it ONLY add the new stuff? Before, I’d wind up with duplicates of absolutely everything…. except the new stuff, which was only in there once.

We were the first to open the blog, and I already asked you if you wanted to participate, I did invite @gazouillis too with full access…
I did renew the domain for another year, I’m moving the webhost to a better one, and we are still newsing about Songbird and also Nightingale :)

Will there ever be podcast support? :-(

  12. Steve May 24, 2011 4:54 am Permalink

Great, however desperate for a player with album artist support. About half the ~7gb of music on my phone is from albums with more than one artist. I have everything correctly tagged by album artist and in album artist based directory structure, however every player tha makes use of the android api is exactly the same when it come to media library organisation in this regard.

Similarly this is why no sync app I have tried is usable because they restructure the music based on artist tags and consequently splits albums in the media library.

When Will Songbird 1.10 Standard Version Be Released?

  15. aasdasd May 29, 2011 12:38 pm Permalink

Settings should be separated, something like this: ‘Browsing Settings’ and ‘Media Player Settings’.

More options are requested for audio playing settings, something like changing the Output Device, number of output channels and it’s configuration, or associating certain filetypes with SongBird.

Support requested for .tta (True Audio), .tak (TAK Lossless Audio), .ape (Monkey’s Audio) and maybe for cue sheets in some way.

If I said anything unwanted, feel free to toss me into a well.

I think iTunes may be subtly messing with songbird? Or am I just paranoid?

  17. Andy Jun 5, 2011 3:53 pm Permalink

Have you officially given up on podcast support now? It’s not on your roadmap, there’s no mention of it any more. Is Songbird just not for people who like podcasts? That seems a real shame.

It is possible, knowing the play-stile of Apple…
