Hello birders,

It’s with great excitement and pleasure that we are announcing the release of Songbird for Android 1.0 to the Android Marketplace!

Songbird Android

A great app getting better with every version. Watch this player!

Love the simplicity. Does everything it needs to, and does it well.
★★★★★ by redux – March 6, 2011

Best music player on the market, hands down!
★★★★★ by Matt – March 6, 2011

Our intrepid beta testers have weighed in, and the feedback has been great. It’s time for another bird to leave the nest.

For those of you yet to take it for a spin…

The new Songbird for Android is an elegant media player for your mobile devices. Browsing your music collection is easy, and playback controls are always accessible. The unique ‘now playing’ drawer offers quick access to album art and additional detail, including Facebook and Flickr integrations that allow you to share your favorite songs with your friends, and to view dynamic artist images while listening to their tracks (a feature some of you may recognize from the mashTape add-on in Songbird for desktop).

Features now available in Songbird for Android:

  • Clean and clear UI with unique ‘now playing’ drawer
  • Matching widget with album art
  • Flickr photo-stream and Facebook ‘Like’ on the go!
  • Playlist creation and editing
  • Set track as ringtone
  • Headset support (wired and Bluetooth)
  • Audioscrobbler support
  • Full-featured search
  • Super-simple music browse + playback control

We’re already hard at work on the next release, and by popular demand, a lock-screen widget is coming soon. :-)

Thanks to all of you who tried out the betas and gave us feedback. We couldn’t have done it without you! As always, feedback is welcome. Let us know what you think and if you run into any problems.

Your friendly Android overlords,
Team Android @ Songbird

    Yey… updating now. Thx

    2 things
    - I agree with this comment from the market: when navigating it would be better that when you go back you end up on the same spot where you left of not back at the top of the list
    - something funny going on with the website navigation in chrome (latest 10 beta), in IE it also not right but in a different way… just have a look when you get the time.

    night all

    @abeman

    Indeed, we have plans to save more view states already. :) Also, thanks for letting us know about the Chrome and IE funkyness. We’ll check it out.

    Yeah !
    I like it and often use it (from the beta1 ^^)

  5. Cominginhot Mar 15, 2011 3:12 pm Permalink

    I will install this the second there is a lockscreen widget. That is the single most important part of any music app on my android phone.

  6. somebird Mar 15, 2011 3:52 pm Permalink

    Love it, but there’s still one bug that’s keeping from using it full time. It doesn’t permanently remember what I’m playing (and more importantly where I’m up to in a track). I.e. if I start listening to a podcast on my way to work in the morning and then pause, the widget shows the track & all is good & ready to be continued later. But after an hour or so, the widget just goes blank and all is forgotten. So I have to go back in digging into the library to find the track & then try & work out where I was up to. Very annoying.

    I guess I’ll keep using winamp for now & check back in a version or two… :(

    Can we rate songs on the mobile app? I looked around but I couldn’t see that functionality. That is a must have for me! thanks!

  8. Aus Mar 15, 2011 4:31 pm Permalink

    @Cominginhot

    Yep, we know. It’s already in the works. :)

    @somebird

    We agree. We have this feature planned already.

    @Ryan

    We do have some magic ratings functionality but the issue here is making sure that syncs back with the desktop. We’ll likely get to that kind of stuff when we get to wireless syncing.

  9. Hrm... Mar 15, 2011 4:33 pm Permalink

    Is there gapless playback yet.

  10. Aus Mar 15, 2011 4:34 pm Permalink

    @Hrm

    No gapless playback yet. That kind of thing is completely unsupported by the media framework. You’ll likely see EQ support before gapless I’m afraid.

    @Aus – great to hear. (also, just re-reading my post, I sounded a bit negative… didn’t mean to take away from the awesomeness of the current version. Keep the goodness coming!)

    Songbird for Android looks great. Please keep it simple.
    WiFi Sync and Audiobook Suport would be fine.

    One simple problem…
    Songbird 1.0 for Android
    or
    Songbird for “Android 1.0″ ?

    This will do a confusion !

    We don’t do that… yet :)

    @Andy

    Our plan is to keep it as simple as possible yet make it as powerful as we can.

    Very nice — congratulations!

    I did notice one minor nit when I replaced my phone’s micro-SD card with a bigger one (that I had copied all my stuff to (including my music) after shutting down my phone). After rebooting my phone with the new micro-SD card in place, I immediately went into Songbird to make sure that my music was still visible.

    Initially, I saw *no* music whatsoever in Songbird! Leaving that apparent “problem” with my music for the moment, I checked on some other stuff, and then went back to Songbird. This time it showed music from maybe a dozen albums. Odd. So I went and did other things, and then came back; this time there were maybe 30 albums worth. This went on for quite some time until all my music appeared (a few thousand songs — 32GB micro-SD cards FTW!).

    It would’ve been nice if Songbird showed a throbber by the song/album/artist counts while it was “re-finding” all my music. Or have the counts update dynamically in the UI while I’m viewing that screen. Basically, some kind of visual “don’t panic — I see you have music out there, and I’m getting things set up” indicator of some sort…

    Anyway, just a thought…

  25. Aus Mar 16, 2011 9:26 pm Permalink

    @yeliaB

    That is odd… no phone in our collection does this. Can you tell us a little bit more about the hardware and Android OS version you are running?

    This looks like it will be very good android alternative to the iTunes ecosystem.
    All that is stopping me from using this full time (at the moment) is the lack of a lock screen and a queue track function/music queue screen. If there was a preference to select the default option (play/enqueue) all the better.

  28. BLaiz0r Mar 17, 2011 4:42 am Permalink

    There’s 1 bug and missing feature that I would like to see addressed,

    The Widget has now been broken on my HTC Hero, it previously worked perfectly, now it renders completely broken, can’t use it.

    The missing feature is no ability to queue tracks onto the currently playing playlist.

  29. yeliaB Mar 17, 2011 8:06 am Permalink

    @Aus

    Hmmm — nothing too exotic, just a regular ol’ Nexus One running 2.3.3.

    Ok, I just rebooted it, and everything worked fine. The only thing I could think of is if copying all the music from the old micro-SD card to the new somehow messed up some kind of cached representation of the locations of all the music that Songbird maintains, and rebuilding this cache takes time. Assuming Songbird actually *has* a cache like that, that is… :-)

    @BLaiz0r

    After upgrading to Songbird 1.0 I found that the widget I had previously put on one of my screens no longer worked. So I removed that widget from the screen and added a new one. That seemed to fix the problem for me.

    @Jamesbloke

    Queue is already in design… not sure when it will be ready though.

    @Corei7

    I’m not sure what you mean by that. We already add a notification to the notifications area so when you dismiss the app it tells you it’s still running.

  32. Scott Mar 17, 2011 11:41 am Permalink

    I really like Songbird for Android, but I would like to see gestures on the now playing screen, and I would really like it if it would use the albumart.jpg files on my SD card for cover art before going on the Internet to look for it, because 1) I have a lot of songs that it doesn’t find the artwork for but I have it on my SD card, 2) I have higher-quality artwork on my card, and 3) I currently don’t have service on my phone. But so far it’s great!

  33. Nicholas Mar 17, 2011 4:30 pm Permalink

    Hey guys, love the app, thanks for the hard work!
    I’m here to report some bugs. FIrst, this one showed up after updating to 1.0: if there is one song now playing, if I open the app(normally using the widget or the notfication) I get an ANR (Application Not Responding) error. I already reported this using the Android report feature, hope you guys got my log.
    Second: if you go to the album view and select an album to list its tracks, when you scroll all the way down it hits the end of the list and bounce back close to the middle of the list. I only noticed this on the last beta, not sure if it was there all along but is kinda annoying :(

  34. Drag0nR3b0rn Mar 18, 2011 10:08 am Permalink

    Congratulations on hitting 1.0 with this great app.

    Some bug progress report: The slowness from beta 3 is gone, but my song view is still empty (while I have no problems browsing my collection by artist, album or genre).

    And to end this comment, some request:
    It’ll be really cool if there was deeper facebook integration (i.e. pull artists pages, not just allow to like). Also lyrics (both embedded and auto downloaded) would be a very welcome addition.

    Thanks again for this great app.

  35. jyggen Mar 19, 2011 8:35 pm Permalink

    Nice to see 1.0, I’ve loved it since the first preview!

    I did notice though that the sound effects from a game I installed (Bejeweled 2 on Samsung Galaxy S) is imported into the player. I checked the default music player and it does not include these. It’s strange since music/sfx from other games/apps with similar folder structure are not imported.

    Can’t wait to see what the future will bring to the desktop- and mobile version of Songbird, keep it up! :)

    I have a wireless bluetooth headset sony ericsson mw 600 and everything works fine(play, pause, next), except track information on its display, it shows nothing. Is it a limitation of bluetooth implementation in android? … Or there is still a chance to solve it with music player software? I have android 2.2 device.

    You know what I’d like to do? I’d like to connect my Android to my Mac, and use Songbird to transfer songs over to the phone. Still not possible?

  40. Jamie Jones Mar 21, 2011 5:39 am Permalink

    So I’ve discovered a problem. I open Songbird, and I can access my music via all the different options (Artists/Songs/Genre) but when I choose ‘Albums’, the screen goes blank and I have to force kill it.

    This method was fully working on the beta versions by the way.

    Anyone else having this trouble?

  41. Aus Mar 21, 2011 8:29 am Permalink

    @Nicholas

    Have you been able to reproduce that ANR? We’ve also seen that bouncing at the end of the list. It seems to only happen on Android 2.3.3 for us, is that the version your phone is running?

    @Drag0nR3b0rn

    Could you give us a little bit more info? Which phone you have, what version of Android it’s running? We’d like to solve that issue for the next release.

    @1n

    Hmmm, interesting. I’m not sure how that headset gets its information. We’d have to get our hands on one to figure out what’s going on.

    @Jamie Jones

    Is this something you can reproduce reliably? If you can submit a crash report that’d be really helpful. Also, what phone and version of Android are you using?

  42. syst3m Mar 21, 2011 12:40 pm Permalink

    Just wondering, if phillips ever released an android mp3 player would it use the songbird app as the default music app? Is this a possible reason behind the app?

  43. Jamie Jones Mar 21, 2011 1:57 pm Permalink

    @Aus

    If by “reproduce reliably” you mean “happens every time”, then yes. I’m unable to send a crash report, it simply says “Sorry! Activity Songbird (in process Songbird) is not responding”, with the options “Force close” or “Wait”.

    I tried “Waiting” for a while, but nothing happened.

    Using Samsung Galaxy Apollo with Android 2.1, if it helps in any way.

  44. maquez Mar 21, 2011 7:06 pm Permalink

    Just discovered the app tonight and already love the design and functionality. One thing I can’t figure out though is how to refresh the library after copying new music to my phone. I’m storing the music on the built in RAM, not the SD card. If I restart the phone the new music is there, but I don’t really want to have to restart my phone every time I add music. Any ideas?

  45. Aus Mar 23, 2011 12:08 am Permalink

    @Jamie Jones

    Yes, that totally helps! We think we’ll have that fixed in 1.1 for you :)

    @maquez

    That’s an odd problem. In theory it should happen automatically when the phone is disconnected from your computer. If that’s not going on there are apps out there that will force a rescan. Here’s one for example: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bero.sdrescan

    Hope that helps.

    Congratulations! I got my new HTC Desire on Saturday and it was the first app I installed, you’ve done a great job!

    But only one question. Despite putting the cover art inside the respective folder for each album, it is displayed arbitrarily (some are, some are not) :( … is there any specific way to get all the covers shown proprerly?

    Thank you in advance! :)

    Great to have it in my Android! I mostly miss an equalizer; it will be my first choice as soon as I can use Eq configuration. Any hint about when it will be available?

    Great app. Keep the good work
    Just one thing : when using bluetooth with my car the music continues playing after disconnect. Would be better if it pause, as with the default player. Using HTC Wildfire.

    Great Work!

    One small bug though using HTC desire 2.2, when I try to search French words (with accents): it types the letter without accent (e.g. “e”) and then the letter with accent (e.g. “é”), for example if i try to type “déportivo”, it will write “deéportivo” and it won’t find anything…

    And is it possible to add the search in the albums?

    @Sergio

    We have a plan to solve that problem but we’re not exactly sure which release it will be in. The best way right now to make sure the album art is visible is to embed it into the file.

    @Nf

    Unfortunately we’re not sure which release will have an EQ but we definitely plan on adding it.

    @Xavier

    Yes! We have a bug open for that, we’re hoping to fix it soon!

    @Vince

    Hmmm, that’s odd. I haven’t run into this problem. It may be a phone specific issue :( We unfortunately don’t have an HTC Desire in house right now so I can’t verify the problem.

    As for your other question, we are considering adding ‘search’ at the top of the list as found in other views but we’re not sure if we will do that or not or when it will happen. I’ll keep you guys posted.

    Nice app! I have two problems, though:

    Sometimes (especially if I press the album art at the widget, it seems) the application just turns black and stops responding at all.

    And it just now locked itself at 2:28 in one of my songs, and refuses to leave that point. Nothing happens when I press play/pause (except for the play/pause button changing image as it should), and when I choose a new song everything updates as it should, except for the timer, which still stands at 2:28, but it does not start playing the new song.

    This last bug happened without me doing anything (I was running and listening to music when it suddenly stopped playing). The GPS was activated, Wifi deactivated if this is important.

    Gotta’ say congratz on the release of SB on Android devices.
    But the main player on PC is still in trouble the following error is hurting my everyday usage of Songbird so bad that I had to change music player. I would much rather use Songbird, but this error just breaks the player.

    playlist.xml – onPlaylistClick – [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE) [nsITreeView.getCellProperties]” nsresult: “0×80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://songbird/content/bindings/playlist.xml :: _onPlaylistClick :: line 1910″ data: no]

    Flickr photo-stream is a great feature and it makes the whole experience with Songbird much more fun. However, the facebook ‘Like’ on the go is weak in my opinion. I mean, how much of social networking must we endure? Maybe its just me, but I think we should keep SB independent of such features as Facebook’s like button.

    Yes, I’m on a Nexus S running 2.3.3. About the ANR, I managed to solve the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

    Please add the ability to add the playlists I’ve selected to sync with my device.

    On iTunes with my iPod Touch, if I select to sync a specific playlist to my device, it adds the songs on the playlist along with the playlist itself.

    However, in Songbird, my songs go to my device but now I have to manually manage playlists on my device.
