Songbird 1.7.3 Available

By ali ali Permalink

Songbird 1.7.3 is now available. It has three distinct changes from Songbird 1.7.2:

  • You’ll no longer lose the Library node after updating from 1.4.3.  If you’ve already lost it, don’t worry — this update will bring it back.
  • The Last.fm add-on will log in again. It broke because of a change on the Last.fm server side that exposed a flaw in our add-on’s login mechanism. We’ve fixed it and a new add-on is available.
  • Sprint’s recent Android 2.1 update for the HTC Hero changed the way that the device identifies itself. Songbird can now recognize the new HTC Hero.

Our apologies for the bumpy ride on this release. We’re doing what we can to smooth out the process for our next release.

Speaking of the next release, we are closing in on a beta 1 build for Songbird 1.8 (codename Orbital), so stay tuned for more new stuff from us in the upcoming days and weeks.

Update (6/11/10): We forgot to include the link to the Linux builds in this post!  They’re here: http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Developer/Articles/Builds/Contributed_Builds#Linux.  These builds are untested but used internally by developers.  We’re not aware of any major problems with them.

I would love to upgrade and see what’s new, but I wont until add-on developers finally update their apps! For some reason unlike on Firefox developers either don’t or take a long time to update for new versions. It is very disappointing.

i’m sorry to say that after using songbird for a long time – I’ve decided to leave it.
I think you guys are doing great work, but you are taking Songbird to places I never wanted (video) while not handling enough the real concerns I have (huge memory footprint, interface slowness, podcast support).

If any of you are interested: At the moment I’m testing Foobar2000. It uses 3rd of the memory Songbird did (40mb instead of 130mb), the interface is a lot more responsive, it has podcast support, and it focuses on playing music – which is all i ever wanted). It has it’s problems of course, but currently they are problems I can live with.

I’ll continue to monitor the blog, and will probably check it out sometime in the future, but for the time being I switched. Best of luck to you all.

Hey guys, I love your product, but 1.7.x is way slower than 1.4 on my vista laptop (and offers no real useful additions). I understand you’re stuck doing what you have to do with Phillips, but please understand performance is a big issue for a media player.

  20. ali Jun 11, 2010 11:35 am Permalink

Everyone with performance problems: Give us bugs with detailed information about your Songbird configuration and library size and we’ll start digging into it. Click here for a list of the perf work we’ve planned (and mostly finished) for the next 2 releases.

@Peter Lairo: Unfortunately, we can’t afford to shell out for the licensing fees to distribute an mp3 encoder for CD Ripping and device transcoding. We don’t have any immediate plans to implement CD burning, although it’s on the roadmap as an idea for a future release.

@tiffanydawn: No plans for the EVO yet, but we’ll likely get to it soon.

@Jigar Shah: Ack, I totally meant to include the link to the Linux builds in this blog post and forgot. I’ll amend it with that link.

    @Mike M: Thanks for posting that. :)

I try running the linux build it is unresponsive. Running in terminal produces only this:

    (songbird-bin:3138): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_window_set_icon_list: icons too large

Searched Google and I couldn’t find a fix. Any help would be appreciated.

  22. Hal Vaughan Jun 11, 2010 7:39 pm Permalink

I’m using OS X, 10.6.3 (as best I know, the latest available).

Songbird doesn’t run at all. It exits with no error message or anything.

I had Songbird running and got an update notice. I went through with the update, told it to restart Songbird, then waited. Nothing. I clicked the icon on my dock, still nothing (other than one bounce from the icon).

After trying this repeatedly, I manually downloaded Songbird for OS X and installed it. My Songbird icon, the black bird’s head, was replaced by the icon for TextEdit. I click on it and it doesn’t run. So I went to the command line and ran it by hand.

I get no error messages at all, it acts like it runs it, then I get another prompt. I type “ps -ax|grep songbird” and get no tasks with the name songbird.

What’s frustrating is that this is one of the few times I *need* this — I’m editing and working on some tracks for some ballroom dance showcases I’m doing, and I use Songbird to create and play a playlist to make sure they all work together after I’ve done the editing in Audacity.

  23. ali Jun 11, 2010 8:22 pm Permalink

@Hal Vaughan: Are you able to get to safe mode to see if there are any add-ons or feathers that broke in the update? Launch Songbird from the command line with the -safe-mode flag, and use the window that comes up to disable all your add-ons. See how far you get from there.

  24. Hal Vaughan Jun 11, 2010 10:59 pm Permalink

    Interesting…

I’ll start by saying I’m exhausted and crashed early tonight, woke up, piddled, watched TV, came back and piddled — hoping to get tired enough to fall asleep again. In other words, even though I’m no idiot with computers, and am still pulling in money from my business based on my own software, I may be a bit fuzzy.

Earlier, when Songbird didn’t work, I renamed the app in the Applications folder to “Songbird-Bad,” so I could keep it straight as the non-working install. Then I installed Songbird fresh, from the same download. It wouldn’t work, so I deleted it. Then, just now, I read your post, so I renamed “Songbird-Bad” to “Songbird” and tried running it with the safe mode flag. I got a message about Divx, which I closed (and that could have popped up from another app and I just never saw it before). Then I got some other windows from Songbird.

Out of curiosity, I killed it on the command line and re-ran it without the safe mode. I got promptings that pretty much all my add-ons were not functioning with the update, then it asked about updating them. I let it update and it opened. For the past 5-7 minutes, I had the “Importing Media” requester up with the sub-message “Adding media to the library…” The progress bar was the “indeterminate wait” kind (moving diagonal lines) and there was nothing to tell me how the progress is going on that.

I closed it and Songbird is working okay.

From there, you’re probably making the same guess as I am. I don’t program on my iMac (it’s my “refuge,” a computer I can use for “user” stuff and do NO programming or admin work on), so I may be off, but I’m guessing that when I made my latest install attempt, that some libraries or something somewhere got replaced that didn’t get replaced the first time.

I’m sorry that, at this point, I can’t reproduce the problem to help with debugging, but if there is some way I can do that, let me know. I’d prefer to do that through e-mail, though, if possible.

  25. mahmoud Jun 11, 2010 11:47 pm Permalink

I am very sad, songbird is not only not working but locking up my computer as it boots up, here’s the whole story

I uninstalled the old version of song bird because i was not getting updates and some of the add ons were not working.

I downloaded the newest version and ran it, but all i got was this error message

    XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
    Locatioin: Chrome://gonzo/content/xul/mainplaer.xul
    Line Number 136, column 19:

so i uninstall it again, this time i was prompted to restart my computer. i did but it locker up at the very frist screen, the one that has an add for my prossesor on it, i tied giving time, it did nothing, i tried getting into the BIOS set up, it did nothing. i had to cut power tree times before it finally got past that screen and started up normally

so i re-download songbird and reinstalled the newest songbird and the same thing happened

does anyone know what is going on here?

Bookmarks have disappeared and you have to use the Songbird Bookmarks extensions, but by taking the 0.1.1 and and updating it yourself to make it compatible for SB 1.7.3. I have asked the author to update it on the addon download page.

if you’d like, there’s a very handy explanation of what the various .sbsettings.xml file sections(the stuff that determines what Songbird shows your phone supporting) that you can use to customize your Evo in Songbird. I did that with my droid eris(everything except for Video, which i don’t want to use Songbird for anyway), and didn’t really have to do much beyond copy/paste. That’s found at this link: http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/User:kurt/MSC_Device_Capabilities_Specification_File
(I believe the Evo supports MIDI, M4A, AAC, AMR, WAV, WMV, MP3, MPG, and OGG). If that explanation proves hard to read, lemme know and I’ll see if I can get one written up that would let Songbird sync in all it’s supported formats.

I’m going back to 1.4.3 until the bookmarks, music brainz, shoutcast add-ons are supported. The complaints about slowness also concern me.
There’s a reason why new releases can be called the bleeding edge of technology.

Going back isn’t as easy as I thought. All the basic add-ons, like Last FM, are missing. Well they were upgraded by 1.7.3 then when I reinstalled 1.4.3 it complained they weren’t compatible. I uninstalled and reinstalled and now those add-ons refuse to install.

Anyone has a list of the basic add-ons for manual addition or knowledge of where the add-on directory is so I can clean it out would be appreciated.

  45. Mark Jun 14, 2010 11:12 am Permalink

Credit where credit is due: I complained about the 3-pane filter not working correctly and the library tab being missing a few days ago. I just downloaded and installed v.1.7.3, and am happy to report that this solved all the problems I was having. Thanks for the quick action, and for a new version that actually makes things much better.

I particularly appreciate the fact that when I (and many others) complained, the Songbird team got to work right away and fixed the problem quickly and (as nearly as I can tell) completely. This is a much better response than I usually get from software companies whose products I paid a lot of money for! Thanks again.

  55. malzfreund Jun 17, 2010 10:04 am Permalink

I have to revise my opinion after an initially positive comment (see #1).

Songbird has stopped working completely for the profile which I carried from 1.4.3 to 1.7.2. to 1.7.3 (on Win x64). Whenever I try to start SB, it doesn’t come up. In the Task Manager, I see two zombie applications: “Warning: Unresponsive Script” and “Importing Media” and one zombie process “songbird.exe.” I have to manually kill those, nothing else works.

Needless to say, I am unhappy.

  56. ricorurik Jun 17, 2010 10:48 am Permalink

I’m having the exact same problem as malzfreund: “unresponsive script” and “importing media”. I can get it to start in safe mode, and if I kill the “importing media” in the task manager I can sometimes get it to start by stopping the script, but that is maybe 1 out of 5 times.

  57. BWGIS Jun 17, 2010 3:57 pm Permalink

I also have the “importing media” running forever problem. I’m using XP, and for what it’s worth, the bulk (but not ALL) of my media library resides on a external hard drive that isn’t always on when songbird is.

Also, as long as I’m posting, I also get the 1 second plus delay when I try to select a song in my library. Since it’s via USB to my hard drive I’m a tad more forgiving, but it IS just barely usable like that.

@Dodger I just came to the conclusion that I’ll try to disable compatibility testing and try the old bookmarks add-on and maybe two others I really got addicted to.

I didn’t realize we could still do this. Just have to get past the un stoppable script problem.

I really hope this release sees my album art from MediaMonkey and Winamp.

I really loved Songbird up to version 1.2. The interface was greate (with Gonzo Kreeger edition feather). It really felt like a native Mac OSX app – except that is was slow like hell …

Then 1.4 came out and the UI was a mess from top to bottom. Really ugly theme, big fat borders for the side and bottom panes … I left Songbird in favor for iTunes.
Today I saw that version 1.7.3 is out already (what happened with 1.5 and 1.6??) and it’S the same ugly mess as 1.4!

No decent Mac OS X theme, Songbird’s look and feel just sucks …

You guys make the same mistake as other developers before (namely Openoffice.org with their keyboard commands). Nearly noone wants an application that looks exactly the same on different operating systems, nor did anyone ever want openoffice to have the same keyboard shortcuts on all supported operating systems (ctrl-* shortcuts on OSX??).
And no, feathers are not the solution? Is there a decent mac os feather? NO! So please include one directly in Songbird and make it really look like a native app. Include one for WinXP and for Win7.

If one doesn’t like the native look and feeld, THEN there is the option of customizing songbird with features. That’s the ways firefox and thunderbird go, and it’s the right way. Imagine, Firefox would look like a Windows app on mac os x … noone wants that, really …

Btw, my solution to get rid of the ugly big fat side pane borders: just use little buttons in the statusbar, that let you show/hide the sidepanes. Look at this screenshot: http://yfrog.com/ccbettersongbirduip

    1) hides the service pane
    2) hides the genre pane
    3) shows the artist info pane
    4) hides the right side pane

If a button is clicked then its icon is changed to reflect the new situation. So if you press the “show artist info pane” button, its arrow is flipped vertically.

  62. stevels Jun 20, 2010 4:25 pm Permalink

I have a hint for anyone who wants to install and keep their bookmarks and other plugins. When 1.7.3 does it’s first run (it takes a long time to finally start) it does a plugin compatibility check and asks to find updates. Tell it no (I think it was a ‘continue’ button). When Songbird starts all the plugins are still enabled and bookmarks still exist and are usable.

When you enter the add-on menu in bright orange it says:

“Add-on compatibility checking is disabled. You may have incompatible add-ons.”
Of course you assume the responsibility for crashes if you allow these add-ons to function.
The Shoutcast add-in still won’t work so just bookmarking the shoutcast.com.

Now I’m going to search for updates one at a time and hopefully the authors will publish over the next month.

  63. stevels Jun 20, 2010 5:19 pm Permalink

OK, so Songbird 1.7.3 still won’t read my album art that MediaMonkey placed and Winamp can read. And Gracenote is coming back with the wrong covers on most of my songs older than 1995. Of course MediaMonkey can’t read art placed by Songbird. You know it’s very primitive to be storing a separate art directory these days when there are so many portable players supporting art in the metadata.

I’ve asked for help in the support section along with other people with the same problems and it continues to go unanswered. At least point to a README that explains the incompatibility between Songbird album art and the rest of the players…

I don’t use it for video or burning or anything. Just organising tunes into smart playlists and go. No big company nonsense, no not plaything this or that format. Choose a skin you like and you are happy.

Since I followed your update suggestion it is broken on my Mac. I don’t want to go to safe mode , I don’t want to start disabling add ons, I just want to listen to music instead I am here writing to you that I am going to stop recommending this to anyone who will listen and start looking for a new player.

    I am sad.

You are trying to do too much Songbird. Just give us a decent player that will play all the formats on multiple platforms.

    Simple. Light. Effective.

    Hey, Songbird team.

I’m sad about this, but the new Songbird version really sucks. It’s performance is extremely bad, it really sucks to work with the player as it has permanent laggs. I nevertheless use Songbird because of it’s addons etc., but the last version worked a lot better than the new one. Poorly.

  68. Blackbird Jun 23, 2010 2:02 am Permalink

Maybe it would be a good thing to add that I only use Songbird because there are no alternatives out there in the www which would make me happy. I would use Amarok if it would support Windows, because it’s no fun to work with Songbird anymore.

Hi, i lose some my excitement with this brand new Songbird 1.7.3. Most of its existing cool add-ons are not working (MinimizeToTray, SongNotifier, a lot of Themes) , no update since last week :(

Any clue about them? Maybe i took the wrong way to update them all?

    Thanks, Folks :D

I’m having problems with 1.7.3 that have been irking me.

1 – unelectable library. i’m unable to select songs songs in my library and play them.

how to recreate: search for something in library, artist album, w/e. play a song? (don’t know if anything needs to be played). click the “X” button in the search bar to clear it and show the whole library again. the number seems to be fixed but when I do this, every time, i can only click on the first 35 songs in my library. if I play the 35th song, I can still use the previous/next track to go to them. but that is rather slow to select songs from a library of almost 10k songs. clicking “Music” sub menu in the “library” menu of the service pane will reload the music library and fix this, but it is still a huge annoyance for me.

    2. i did not notice this until earlier today, but I set songbird up to watch a folder (didn’t import or anything as songbird is my default), and one particular artist has two albums. now all my music is set up the same in the folder.

    LetterOfAlphabet/ArtistName/[Year] AlbumName/ArtistName – TrackNo. – SongName.mp3

    eg. J/Journey/[XXXX] Greatest Hits/Journey – 01 – Don’t Stop Believing.mp3.

you get the jist…well for the one artist, only one of the albums is showing up in the list. rebooting songbird, pc, etc. doesn’t help to correct the problem. If i move the album to a different folder (so it is not in the folder songbird watches at all) and then move it back, songbird will recognize it and then add it tot he list. this is also not a fix as it only works for that session. if i reboot songbird, it fails to appear again. this is the only one i have seen so far, though i admit, i have not paid much attention to it. I suspect there could be more albums missing from my library due to this bug.

admins or interested – please feel free to email me at caboose607@yahoo.com for more information if needed or for information on my system if needed. if interested a remote session could possibly be set up so that i can show you first hand what i am experiencing. thank you. =)

Well…if you guys knew that i have installed more then 20 songbirds ins friends computers that uses windows you should be happy…because those 20 people will tell they’re other friends to do it so. My problem is that right now since you guys dont support anymore linux will be difficult to keep installing it on friends computers when I can not use it anymore. Please think about the linux support. Peace

  72. David C Jul 1, 2010 6:41 am Permalink

@Bruno – just because YOU put it on their computer, doesn’t mean they use it, nor does it mean that they will go and tell their friends about it.

  73. David C Jul 4, 2010 8:36 am Permalink

another bug – I’ve got songbird to set up a folder (my music library, obviously), yet when I ad new files to the folder, songbird doesn’t add them automatically. I have to go back top options, tell it so watch the same folder and then tell songbird to rescan it. Then the new tracks will be added.

I’ve tried installing Songbird a few times and it won’t open at all. It installs but It just gets stuck on the splash screen. Really frustrating because Songbird is a promising piece of software and I’d hate to just leave it without a solution. Thanks.

@#&*^#&*#^$*@^! Wish the post above would have mentioned that you lose your bookmarks, but I see other users lamenting this as well. Please update the bookmarks add-on, since it is now incompatible with 1.7.3. I’m reverting down until this can be fixed and will stop updating in the future until these things are clear – such a pain…

I have the HTC EVO, I saw on the internet that songbird can be used as a replacement for itune on this devise but I can’t seem to get it to sync. Can you walk me through it? I know a couple of people that have this same phone and are looking for a solution. If you can, I think that will use your program as well.

  77. ruppel Jul 7, 2010 5:02 pm Permalink

    @Greg
Do you have the MSC addon? http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1667

    1. With the above addon installed, once you connect the Evo, select “Disk drive” as connection type on the device.
    2. Open Songbird (if not already open) and in the service pane to the left, you should see a device icon labeled “HTC Android Phone”.

From there it’s as easy as drag and drop. If you run into any difficulty, feel free to put a post up on getsatisfaction.com/songbird or hop onto IRC to chat, http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Developer/Articles/Advocacy/IRC.

I really want to like Songbird, but I can’t get it stable on my machine. I was hoping that this version would play nicely on my windows 7 machine, but still no joy! I’ve tried disabling all add ons, but it regularly crashes or hangs for a couple of seconds, even when doing a search. I don’t think it’s the machine, its solid as rock with all the other applications I use.

Can’t bring myself to install itunes, so using windows media player at the moment! Far from ideal. Like I said I do really want to use it, design wise its a great programme, made all the better for being open source. I hope 1.8 sorts it out!

Please make a version for linux again!

I just updated to this version and was wondering if there is a ShoutCast add-on that was made yet? The previous installment appears to be incompatible with 1.7.3. In other news, thanks for the updates!

I use Songbird for my little 860+ artist collection and for work.

Kudos on memory stick support! You folks did an awesome job on that.

I’m using 1.7.3 on my home Vista machine but it slagged my bookmarks!
I’m too damn forgetful to remember all the URL’s for my mp3 blogs and other important sites so this really hurts.

I sure remember when Songbird was my browser/player of choice!

No way I’m going to upgrade at work (Windows XP) until bookmarks are fixed though.

Are you ever going to support the Mozilla browser functions fully?
That really helps music heads like me.

Also, is there are a way I can pay for the mp3 codec for CD rips & make it work for Songbird? Or have flac? I can throw them on memory sticks post rip.

Thanks for your awesome work. Let me know if I have to use an alternative for my needs.

    David

You guys need to stop packing in the features and work on making it light weight. I am running a VERY modern rig and this is far slower then itunes.

This release is moving me to other products. You competing with iTunes. iTunes has features but the main people want to lose it is that is so slow. I think you guys are missing the mark on where you need to take this product to make it the great thing it has the potential to be.

I am also getting this message

    XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
    Location: chrome://gonzo/content/xul/mainplayer.xul
    Line Number 136, Column 19: <button class="service-pane-spring-load-button"

I uninstalled all versions of Songbird that I found on my computer, downloaded a new one, but still no possibility of it opening correctly. Oddly enough the music still plays, but the player doesn't show. What to do?

  84. Sandrahess Jul 26, 2010 11:20 pm Permalink

Can it handle podcasts yet? Last time I tried it it’s podcast support was limited to giving it the podcast address then watching it begin downloading every episode of that podcast. There were absolutely no options for controlling the feed.

Sorry, but I need to downgrade to 1.4.3! Did you seriously test this bugger? My Grandmother is way faster than version 1.7.3…..and she is long since dead!

  86. Tommy j Jul 28, 2010 5:08 pm Permalink

What happened? I loved songbird but I updated to fix the last fm issue and now it is slow to search and to even select an artist to play. And my favorite add on Bird Tabs, the main reason i loved Songbird no longer works. Im downgrading till it Songbird is fixed.

  87. Bittern Jul 31, 2010 3:49 pm Permalink

Ugh. 1.7.3 has completely gimped Songbird. Last.fm refuses to connect, LyricsMaster doesn’t work (I can’t even bring it up manually) and, worst of all, the application has now been bloated into some quasiTunes memory hog.

Feh your link to the linux build is useless, while you roll in the money microsoft paid you off to stab linux in the back we got millions of players on linux ready to suit users needs without being a piece of shit

  91. David Aug 17, 2010 5:55 am Permalink

@dancingmadrb3 – typical linux fanboy. always trying to make it seem like everyone is out to get his little operating system. go on keep hating everything just to get that sense of accomplishment you so clearly crave for choosing to use a different operating system.

  92. Brandon Aug 18, 2010 7:13 am Permalink

    @dancingmadrb3
Linux ‘players’ amuses me. Like David here said, no one’s out to get you. No need to hate. Microsoft makes Windows which, imo, has a few strong points Linux will never have, such as the ability to run .exe files. Go use Rhythmbox instead of Songbird if you’re running Linux. It’s better for you :)

    Hello,
I tried Songbird under mac OS X Snow Leopard with VoiceOver, the built in screenreader for blind people and found your App entirely unaccessible. Why??? Did you forget about handicapped persons????? Or did I miss something? Please make your product accessible – just under Mac OS it is easy: the screenreading is par of the OS, just use it and make your App support it! As far as I know there are guidelines from Apple for making Apps VO-compliant. Thanks – and dont forget the handycapped, forgeting us is bad manners!! Greetings Andi

Last.fm is not working for me.

I click log in, enter the user and password, the browser window inside Songbird opens in last.fm, it says its log in, it asks me to allow songbird. I allow it.

However, on the bottom right of songbird, the ‘logging into last.fm’ stays for ever, with logging in. If I restart songbird and log in again, it goes back to the last.fm website… same same…

    Any ideas?
