Songbird 1.4.1 released

By stevel stevel Permalink
We’ve run into a little snag with the 1.4.1 release. We’re actively working on a fix that will be available in a few hours. For users that have already run into the issue where the display panes vanish and the new feather only loads partially there is a simple fix — switch to the Purple Rain feather from the View menu.
Songbird 1.4.1 is ready for download!

Songbird 1.4.1′s main focus has been on adding new device support, CD rip support, and a new Feather/skin. We’ve included more format/codec support out of the box, improved the media management user experience, and continue to work on performance, footprint, and stability. We continue to listen to your feedback on Get Satisfaction, Bugzilla, and of course right here on our blog. Please let us know what’s important to you.

New Features

MSC Device SupportMSC Device Support
Songbird now supports MSC (Mass Storage Class) devices. Sync tracks (and playlists on compatible devices) to phones and other MP3 players with MSC mode. Tracks in incompatible formats can be transcoded on the fly to ensure your music is always with you. (Windows only, requires the MSC add-on)

CD Rip SupportCD Rip Support
Songbird can now rip CDs! Automatically lookup your metadata on Gracenote (or other third party services via additional add-ons), and rip CDs to FLAC/OGG (or WMA on Windows). (Windows only, requires the CD Rip add-on… Mac support is coming in the next release)

Purple Rain FeatherPurple Rain Feather
OMG! New Feather! We’ve designed a whole new Feather for a whole new unique look. Dedicated toggle buttons for the most frequently used Media Views, simplified and more obvious Display Pane management, and a unique look all to our own.

For more info on the release, please see our release notes.

What’s Next

Our next release will introduce video management and playback, Windows 7 support, continued UI work, and more performance/stability work. Stay tuned to the blog to keep up to date, or if you like to live dangerously check out one of our nightly builds and see the progress for yourself!

We’re always interested in hearing your feedback so please comment below and file bugs and/or feature requests in Bugzilla.

Woohoo! Congrats, thank you, and keep up the good work!

Also, any idea when us Linux users will get MSC and/or CD Rip? I know you’ve already established your plans for the next couple releases, but even if it’s going to be a while, I think we deserve a spot on the roadmap so we know exactly how long we are going to have to wait. :-)

Love the new feather… seems stable, but getting errors codes when trying to use shoutcast. Overall very clean GUI.

    Finally! Thank you!!!!! Congrats!
I’ve been looking forward for this for months!

    But…
When I try to install it tells me it can’t because there is an older version and asks if I want to remove it.
When I tell him Yes – it just pops the question again. Never ending!

Found out why my Shoutcast is not working…
    Not Compatible with Songbird 1.4.1
Along with: Concerts, Last Fm, Mashtape

Oh well at least the purple feather is nice to look at.

@coskibum: Go to your Add-ons manager and do a check for updates… there should be 1.4.1 compatible versions of all of those add-ons.

First, thx for this new release!

But my opinion is that Songbird need a lot of work as an audio player prior to convert it in a full multimedia player. Making the new features only available on Windows is a bad decision too :(

Doesn’t work in Windows 7… ok

  10. shym Dec 21, 2009 2:38 pm Permalink

ok, it was my bad (i think), for some reason i didn’t have songbird-uninstall.exe

    it works great now. Thanks!!

  11. Danny Dec 21, 2009 2:40 pm Permalink

I agree with Dimas you should make new releases compatible with all OS before releasing them, or at least the latest version of the OS you are releasing it for. I’m running Windows 7 and can’t get the program to work even though it installed.

And now i can’t even downgrade to 1.2 which did run on Win 7, not impressed lads.

  12. woop Dec 21, 2009 2:40 pm Permalink

My songbird says that there a no updates available (I’m using 1.2.0 atm). Do i have to manually download the new release or do i just have to wait?

  13. stevel Dec 21, 2009 2:43 pm Permalink

@Danny – That’s not really practical given our broad platform support. Also, you might be running into bug 19337… there’s a workaround in there. Let me know if that fixes the issue for you.

  14. Dimas Dec 21, 2009 2:59 pm Permalink

Ehm.. I updated to the new version and the Right and Bottom display panes are not working. It shows a white space that can’t be removed with pane butons, only dropping it off with mouse. Starting Songbird in a safe mode don’t help.

With 1.4.1 out, I can’t bookmark any sites, whereas in 1.2.0 I was able to.

  18. CheesecakeRecipe Dec 21, 2009 3:04 pm Permalink

It’s about time we finally see our next full release! And while it wasn’t quite the one I was hoping for, for the most part it is a very big step up.

I was actually not sure if I was going to like the new feather, but in action it is indeed very beautiful.

However, there are two things that I am not very satisfied with. The splash screen is goofy and makes the load time much more noticeable in my opinion. Is there a way to disable this? I didn’t see it in the options menu anywhere. That’s my other complaint. Boot time performance has taken a massive hit. My previous version (1.2, the latest big public release) booted from activation to usable within 2-3 seconds. 1.4.1 takes anywhere between 10-15 seconds to boot. It shouldn’t be my system, as i’m running a Quad Core @ 2.4GHz with 8GB of RAM. I wonder if I am the only one to notice that the boot time has dramatically increased?

  20. KotW Dec 21, 2009 3:09 pm Permalink

@CheesecakeRecipe For now, you can just rename, replace or delete “splash.bmp” in the Songbird program folder to disable the splash.

I do wonder why it was added in the first place.

@Stevel: don’t you think this deserves a notice on the front page in your last post? Otherwise people will think they’ve lost an important feature.

  22. Steven Dec 21, 2009 3:11 pm Permalink

    ZOMG new website!

Is it only manual update? When I search on the beta release it tells me there’s nothing new.

  23. stevel Dec 21, 2009 3:13 pm Permalink

@KotwW – Because on some Windows platforms (like my XP box), there is no notification that the app is running, so users weren’t getting any feedback that the app was launching. We decided to throw in a splash screen so they were aware that the app was starting. As you pointed out, it’s simple to remove if you really hate it :)

@CheesecakeRecipe – The splash screen doesn’t add anything to the startup time… if your startup time is longer, then it’s something else (possibly new add-ons?) that is causing it to be higher.

  24. CheesecakeRecipe Dec 21, 2009 3:13 pm Permalink

    @KotW

Thanks for that, very fast response! It worked like a charm and strangely enough decreased songbird’s boot time to about 6 seconds. Amazing what something like that can do.

I think for sure that if the splash screen HAS to be included, that it be a toggle option so that those of us who don’t care for it can disable it nice and easy. Perhaps i’ll put that in as a feature request on Bugzilla.

  25. CheesecakeRecipe Dec 21, 2009 3:15 pm Permalink

    @stevel

I’ll do a couple of disables to see if it is one of the new plugins causing some further bloat, at least on my system.

  29. Michael Purses Dec 21, 2009 3:35 pm Permalink

@CheesecakeRecipe The startup difference is probably from “cold start+upgrading library” vs. “warm start+done updating”. The splash screen can’t be the difference.

  30. Aus Dec 21, 2009 3:45 pm Permalink

    @Alex

It’s not that it doesn’t work in Windows 7 but rather that we don’t officially support Windows 7 yet. During installation, you will get a warning about that but Songbird can still be installed.

Some Windows 7 specific features will not work for the time being, notably AeroSnapping. The next release will include official Windows 7 support.

  33. NateDawg Dec 21, 2009 4:23 pm Permalink

    Not to bad!
There are still some features that needs to be worked on. The ability to queue tracks without having to mess around with playlists. It would be great if I could set my whole library to shuffle and then queue tracks when I feel like listening to something specific. Also it would be good if some addons were integrated into songbird. I shouldn’t have to install a special addon just to jump to the current playing track or minimize to the system tray. Theses are basic features that I thought would have been integrated by now.

I am a big fan of songbird. So thank you a lot for putting so much effort into this. But also let me address some things that I don’t like to much about the new release. Songbird is “blue ocean” because you can browse the web with it (e.g. online radio station and others – Why did you exclude the bookmarking function? That is almost a reason to take another program, fortunately I found the add on soon. Why did you do that? The new icon – it looks so cheap and goofy! I liked the old one a lot better – it was artistic – even if the never-ending fart wasn’t too pretty. Why did you change that? And finally- why isn’t the rubber ducky coming back? Did your staff change a lot during the last couple of month? Thanks besides that, this is a great release, in my opinion.

Where do I get the new Purple Rain skin? A few features that I would like to see added would be music visualizations, Slacker radio support, Radiotime support, a way to import album art directly from iTunes and a program to work on enhancing music by removing artifacts, distortion, volume normalizer, etc. I have gone back and forth between Songbird and iTunes because they are both good, but not yet perfect. I’m hoping Songbird becomes my player of choice, but it still has some improving to do.

  62. Danny Dec 22, 2009 4:41 am Permalink

Hey, i posted earlier about 1.4.1 not working on win7. Stevel gave me a link with some solutions but none of them seemed to work. So i uninstalled songbird 1.4.1 and tried to reinstall 1.2 but it says that 1.2 is already in stalled and keeps asking me do i want to uninstall the songbird 1.2 that it thinks is already installed and install the 1.2 i’m opening repeatedly. it does this if i try and reinstall 1.4.1 and even if i try and install the 1.5 beta.

i cant find any folders or files related to any of the songbird releases. Any ideas on how to install it?

  63. Gertjan Dec 22, 2009 5:07 am Permalink

Maybe you should delete the registry entries as well.

Thanks for the update. It looks beautiful.

And thanks for all of your work – seems like I see too many complaints here, from people who are downloading and using a free program that works great, and is being continually worked on.

My suggestion to everyone who has a complaint: ask what you can do, or donate.

I’m excited about having an open solution for controlling an playing my music, have moved away from itunes.

    @Antonio

I also do not have the splash screen in Linux.

  68. stevel Dec 22, 2009 8:38 am Permalink

@Antonio & @Forest – The splash screen is only on Windows since that seems to be the only platform crappy enough to not give sufficient notification that the app is starting ;-)

@xen – Mac CD rip support is in the next release (indeed if you grab a nightly it’s working just fine in there). Mac MSC support is in development, we’ll have an add-on uploaded once we’ve ironed out some of the bugs.

@Nick M – Huh, we seem to have lost that functionality in the new add-ons site. I’ll file a bug and figure out how we can get that back.. thanks for letting us know.

@Stan – Depends how you installed it. If you installed it from our tarball them simply download the new tarball and unzip it. If you installed it from a .deb or PPA, then you’ll have to wait for whoever created the package you’re using to update a new build.

@Gertjan – Because MP3 is a patented codec, and we don’t have a license to use it. If you have a GStreamer MP3 encoder plugin installed on your system, we’ll utilise it – but otherwise we can’t ship one without infringing on patents or paying exorbitant fees to license it.

@Danny – You could try looking in $USERPROFILE/Application Data or $USERPROFILE/Local Settings/Application Data to see if the presence of any Songbird folders there are screwing things up.

WOW! KEEP IT Coming. FLAC ripping and MSC device management with transcoding just pushed you guys to the top of the player list in my book.

Not to be picky, but you think you guys could throw in an HDTV mode so songbird looks great on a 58 TV at 1080p without straining my eyes.

  70. Steven Dec 22, 2009 12:04 pm Permalink

    Another question:

Do you guys get a bit of profit from redirects to the 7digital store?

  71. WD Dec 22, 2009 4:35 pm Permalink

@stevel – Will we see transcoding for MP3 or AAC for the use of ipod and other devices that only support MP3. Also how about AAC ripping? I know that MP3 is patented but you can still make use of the LAME encoder and people can download it on their own terms. In the end users can rip to OGG, FLAC, AAC & MP3.

    @stevel

I’m not sure what you mean. I have Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 on my computers and as far as I can tell, they do not make any indication that the app is starting. That’s not a complaint though. I’m just curious what Ubuntu does differently from Windows that it’s considered “sufficient notification that the app is starting.”

  73. ryankage Dec 22, 2009 7:22 pm Permalink

I am using Windows 7 64bit. I can see the CD Rip option in the Tool>Options, but when I throw in a music CD Songbird acts like it’s trying to see it, but then nothing happens. Is this a Windows 7 problem that will be fixed in the 1.7 release you were talking about before, or am I missing something?

  74. Denis Dec 22, 2009 8:46 pm Permalink

    Hi
Does the iPod add on include the iPod touch players? I can’t seem to find the iPod yet, will keep trying as I’m sick of fiddling with itunes.
Best wishes with this version – it’s looking good

  75. maxim Dec 23, 2009 1:49 am Permalink

Cool. But what about linux? What version will have support cd-rip?

  76. stevel Dec 23, 2009 9:03 am Permalink

@Steven – Yeah, we get a rev share from tracks sold there.

@WD – Nope, both AAC and MP3 are patent encumbered codecs with exorbitant license fees. We can’t distribute encoders for them without paying those license fees (LAME included).

@Forest – Hrm, on my Ubuntu system (9.04) I get a busy mouse cursor and a task manager notification that Songbird is launching.

@Denis – Nope, the iPod Touch is an unsupported iPod due to Apple’s use of encryption to access the device.

  77. electropole Dec 23, 2009 9:28 am Permalink

Do we know at what compression rate the flac is encoded at? and is there a way to change that?

  78. WD Dec 23, 2009 1:10 pm Permalink

@stevel – I wasn’t talking about distributing LAME within songbird, but rather make use of LAME for ripping and transcoding. Meaning if the user wants to have transcoding and ripping support for MP3s they will be the ones responsible for downloading and manually installing LAME so that songbird can work with it. Hope that made a little more sense.

Also stevel, can you look into support for Rockbox. Rockbox is an open source firmware for the ipod and many other mp3 players, but songbird and itunes will report that the ipod needs to be restored. Adding a simple export to a drive will solve this issue. Eg: My iPod drive letter is H: so exporting to H:->Music->%Artist->%Album would solve the problem.

    Rockbox supports:
MP1, MP2, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, MP4 AAC, Musepack, AC3, WMA, Speex, Cook, ATRAC3, WavePack Hybrid, FLAC, WavePack, Shorten, Apple Lossless, Monkey’s Audio, Wave, Apple AIFF, ADX, SID, NSF, SAP, SPC and MOD.

make a add-on for you tube videos to play along with the current song that songbird is playing like the mini tube player for the winamp player.

  80. raggit Dec 23, 2009 3:45 pm Permalink

where is the add-ons folder on vista what i need to delete and whats the name.
vista and xp have different folder names so they put in different places i think

why dont u fully support windows 7? is that so hard?? sonbird for me is a junk…

  82. klint Dec 24, 2009 4:25 am Permalink

@WD: I don”t know about rockbox, but have you tested in MSC mode, by removing the iPod addon and adding the MSC Device Support addon? So that SB can see your player as simple external drive…

  83. WD Dec 24, 2009 9:33 am Permalink

@klint – I tried that immediately afterward, but SB still wont recognize it. I can’t even get songbird to recognize my iPod even with the iPod addon and Apples default firmware. But iTunes has no problems. I am thinking it’s an issue with 2nd Gen iPod Nano’s.

  84. Alex Monk Dec 25, 2009 7:06 am Permalink

    Some remarks:
Buttons that open side panels – in early versions buttons, that open and that select what add-on will be, were near each other. In current version open button is in the middle of panel and select button is in the corner. I think that it’s not very usable.
    Thanks for your great work.

I like Songbird and some of your features are totally essential, but what were you thinking when you eliminated bookmarks (which it appears you have done by 1.4.3-1438) ? Your bookmarks were always highly primitive but usable for small numbers of bookmarks. Too bad there were never bookmark folders!

Are we supposed to get and html editor and create our own bookmarks page? Or bookmark in another browser and load bookmarks in Songbird?

I’ve got 50-60 music sites I regularly access that make some kind of bookmarks system a necessity. Please think of the implications of removing or added features for your releases before you take action!

  86. cyko_01 Dec 26, 2009 8:45 am Permalink

Love the new icon! much better then that orange fish! bookmarks should be a drop-down menu like the file/edit/controls/view/tools/help menus like it is in firefox. This allows you to view your bookmarks without resizing the width of the webpage. Miss old tabs behaviour add-on and pane buttons add-on. browser address bar should always be displayed.

I hate to say it, but as far a web browsing goes (remember, this was supposed to set it apart from all the other media players) songbird is really going downhill. Stop disabling (old tabs behaviour) and removing stuff(bookmarks). The fact that people have developed add-ons to restore this functionality should tell you that they are necessary features!

    thanks for listening

    can songbird play audio cd?

  88. Tom Dec 27, 2009 7:51 am Permalink

I cant believe this release looks so much better than all the other releases, and it does not work with windows 7 :(

  89. Manko10 Dec 28, 2009 3:08 am Permalink

    Hi, great release in general.
I don’t like the new theme because it has to few contrasts but of course I can change that. Much more important is when will Songbird support CD ripping on Linux? You always talk about Windows and Mac. Formerly the add-on was for Windows and Mac only and now you say it’s for Windows only and Mac is coming soon. What about Linux? I think a lot of Songbird users use Linux and it would be fine to see CD ripping for Linux in a coming release. Maybe the CD ripping feature could provide a little more options as SoundJuicer does. And of course you don’t have to implement it yourself, you can use system libraries.

  90. Alex Monk Dec 28, 2009 7:54 am Permalink

And yes – you have a bug in site. Button “Download” after you search for add-ons doesn’t work.

  91. Alex Monk Dec 28, 2009 7:59 am Permalink

    Sorry – don’t listen me about Download-button)

  92. klint Dec 28, 2009 8:09 am Permalink

    @David Kuhn
Search for the Songbird Bookmarks addon! It will reinstall full bookmarks feature as before :)

  93. klint Dec 28, 2009 8:11 am Permalink

@Alex Monk: yes, there is an issue when the search for an addon is done in a certain way. A bug has been filed for it already. You have to download from the addon’s detail page directly.

I just upgraded from 1.2.0 to 1.4.3 on Ubuntu 9.10, and I hate how Pure Player is incompatible with the latest version of Songbird. What happened in between that broke compatibility?

  95. Cygnus2112 Jan 3, 2010 6:08 pm Permalink

ryankage: Exactly my problem here. Windows 7 64bit and Songbird can’t even see any CD in the CD drive, nor does the installed CD rip add-on show any action. Have you been successful in solving the problem? Or anybody else with any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  96. Oktyabr Jan 5, 2010 11:37 am Permalink

CD ripping!? Nice! Songbird just replaced yet another single function app on my harddrive.

I only wish there was an easy way to display my library as paths relative to the library itself. I have over 11,000 tracks by 500+ artists and use other software that insists on browsing by library->folder where “folder” is usually the artist name but *not always*. Is there a way to get Songbird to do this too?

Songbird 1.4.3 messes with my FLAC metadata so I cannot use it! How do I download an earlier version so I can use my favorite player!

    THIS SUCKS!
