I think you guys are missing the BIG picture.

1) POTI is/wants to work with hardware manufacturers, and most portable media players these days supports video’s. Songbird 1.4 already technically supports firmware updating (which is a nice feature for hardware manufacturers).
2) Technologies such as visualisations are best implemented when video support exists. They can then utilise the video functionality to display visualisations
3) There is an abundance of Podcasts which now utilise both videos and audio these days, so once podcast support is properly implemented, video will be a prequisite for many podcast users anyway.
4) Technically, there is probably unlikely to be any slowdown occurred due to anything except larger library size (because of the extra media items in the library, which means larger database).
5) As mentioned, this would allow music video’s to be sold on supported music stores.

So, theres potentially plenty of benefits. Remember, internet browsers were never intended to stream video’s, act as the primary GUI for an operating system (chromeOS), render 3D graphics or act as online music players. Yet, they are doing all those things (they are basically secure on-the-fly compilers these days). And music/video are so similar, that I believe the benefits will be quite significant.

Well, you have to factor in the facts that:
a) Songbird’s main competitors are iTunes, WMP, and Zune, which all have video support (notice iTunes also has only “tunes” in its name, yet it plays video).
b) There are a lot of music videos out there.
c) It’s easier to have one place to manage all your media, especially when you tend to sync different media types.
In any case, I agree about streamlining, but video functionality, at least very basic video functionality, is important IMHO. Besides, if they streamline now and save video until later, they’ll have to mess with the streamlined code to add video and then streamline again. And if they don’t add video support, they won’t be able to readily compete with other media players…

I agree with Pr1me. It’s called SONGbird, not video bird. Plus VLC plays video just fine, and there’s performance issues and other MUSIC related functionality that would be much preferred to video support.

Totally agrees with thc, someone has to stand up in POTI headquarters and put the video functionality back in the fridge for a couple of months and focus on streamlining the product. (Imo, I think it’s even better to keep video out of the core product and bring it as an addon.)

Ok, what is going over at POTI headquarters? No releases for months, people leaving the team, and roadmaps that are only interested in adding new features rather than FIXING existing ones. Like the other posters said, I don’t really care about video playing, cd ripping, or new features if the core songbird player is a piece of garbage.

Seriously guys. For as long as songbird has been in development it should be much farther along resource-wise. The thing is a slow bloated hog that is piggy in it’s functionality of a good day, and down right terrible the rest of the time.

Please spend a few releases streamlining the core product and stop adding new features that just add to the broken end product. Songbird is quickly becoming bloatware. I’m all for a nice, multi-function final product, but that’s stuff you should be worrying about for the 2.0 release, instead of trying to cram it all into 1.* releases that never come out because all the new features are busted.

hmmm i have tried last 1.4b3 and it seems faster! the last stable is annoying, very slow, and considering 1.4b3 is several weeks old, I hope for more improvements on 1.4 stable, I really hope its released soon, such a fine players should have more builds…

So where are the updates?
I really love songbird but the Media Management Error is getting so tiresome. I know it is fixed, because the get satisfaction site said so. Could you please please please release an updated version with this bug fixed?

Devs, please note, most users don’t give a flip for added features right now, cd-ripping? who does that anyway, this is the digital age. I don’t want more support for devices I don’t own, I just want the basic stuff to work and work speedy at that!

Please for the love of songbird, re-haul your roadmaps and get your priorities straight.

Yep
And if you narrow to Priority 1 and 2 only, you end up with even less open bugs (knowing that new ones may be discovered though, as more testers are using the recent Korn nightlies)
