Third place goes to RockBagFullOfCrap
An honorable mention goes to mpurses. Sadly this video was submitted late, so it was technically disqualified, but if you want a quick overview of popular Songbird add-ons it’s worth a watch.
We really appreciate everyone who participated in the contest, and we think you’re all winners! If you submitted a video (even if it did not win) please email me at laura@songbirdnest.com with your YouTube user name, your real name and your mailing address and I’ll get your prize mailed out to you right away.
Farewell my fine feathered friends
In other news, I am so sad to announce that this will be my final Birdbath as I’ve joined another flock. I know this community will be in excellent hands with Songbird employees and our super duper champions and trust you’ll all pull together to help new birds find their wings. It’s been such a pleasure to fly with you all and I can’t wait to see where this bird is going next!

No! Don’t leave us, Laura!
I would like to echo Savior’s sentiment, and furthermore inquire what is holding up the process.
agree with Saviour
We’ll miss you Laura! The Songbird team sure has some big shoes to fill now. (And I’m not referring to your shoe size! ^.^)
@Saviour: Bahahahahahaha! xD
I won! Awesome!

I hope your new flock will be just as great as this,
Lenny
{°v°} =3
Laura, thank you so much for being supportive of me and everyone else over the past few months. I don’t know what kind of flock you are joining, but I hope that you migrated to it because you wanted to, and I hope that it is just as exciting as this one. Maybe make a comment on a blog post or on getsatisfaction every few months to keep in touch! I will miss you very much.
NOOOOOOO.. Anyone but laura
I think Kayne and Led Zeppelin are going to be dropped and the roadmap will continue with Madonna, looking at the nightlies.
So we’ll have to be patient until next year.
NOOOO!
@Nick The devs would never stand for that! You will see a release this month!
@Michael — I hope so!, How did your upgrade to 9.10 go?
I always do fresh installs no matter what OS it is, but it went flawlessly.. faster than ever, no problems whatsoever, just beautiful.
@Nick, I agree with Michael.. 1.4.x will CERTAINLY be released this time. 1.3.x was probably skipped because the updates seemed quite minor. 1.4 is a major release though, and adds MTP, nicer error messages, better handling of corrupt MP3’s, cleanup of the music management windows, transcoding, etc.
yes 1.4.x will be probably released… x may not be equal to 0, though
As there is the Korn (another “K”, have you noted?) release that is already cooking at the moment, with a few nasty bugs correction (like the broken managed files), a brand new default feather and some nice new features like Playlist support for MSC devices. In addition to all what Andrew has listed for Kanye.
I just had a look over at bugzilla and found no open bugs for the upcoming release.
Can anyone tell us what is still delaying this highly anticipated release?
I’d rather bet that the upcoming release is Korn, not Kanye…There, a lot of bugs/enhancements are still open, but with a very aggressive planning. It is worth waiting a little bit more (better MSC integration with playlist support, nasty last minute Kanye bugs corrected and a pair of new shiny, shiny, shiny boots of feather).
As always, a software will be released when it is… released
Good luck to you!
keep up the good work guys.
Speaking of 9.10 upgrades, the iPod add-on seems to stop working when one does that. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?
All of this speculation about the next release is exactly what a blog is supposed to be about. So why are there never any updates about any of these things? only meaningless updates about how cool the new office looks or what some people I don’t know had for lunch.
Guess what, those people you don’t know are actually the ones developing this piece of software that you can use for free. But someone has to pay for their lunches all the same, right?
So, in addition the you and me, Songbird happens to be also a company that has paying customers who will fund the development and as such, are entitled to have additional product requirements and time constraints that cannot be told publicly at every move.
So, don’t worry, news will come when they come…
In the meantime, you can enjoy the latest 1.4 builds if you want. They’re pretty stable.
Hope this helps.
This never ending debate is getting a bit boring, don’t you think?
Same old questions arise every time the release date passes, and while I can understand everybody getting a little impatient, it seems that some would like daily reports (“It’s Monday, sorry guys, nothing new yet.” … And on Tuesday: “It’s still Monday, sorry guys” … and on Thursday etc. etc.). – TBD means “We don’t know”.
On the other hand, I’m pretty sick of the “Get over it, this is FREE so shut the f*** up” arguments. I don’t know how exactly things stand in the US, but being European I consider this constant reminder – pardon my french – impolite and idiotic.
I’m French, so please don’t be impolite by asking to be pardoned!
And we’re not THAT rude after all, for I don’t know where you have read the f*** word in my reply.
I stand by every word of this reply though: Songbird is free, hence deals have to be found and made by the company, hence constraints that John Doe is not aware of and that can lead to some delays…
I really think this needs to be reminded gently once in a while in response to constant complains about planning.
@klint
This was not a direct response to your comment, just my sarcastic opinion on constant debating on this subject in general. No hard feelings I hope – I exaggerated for the sake of argument.
None taken
@klint
Songbird is free and I appreciate that much. On the other hand, I think it’s reasonable to ask POTI to do one of two things:
1. Keep the user/developer community informed about changes/plans in the development process or
2. Stop calling yourselves an open source software project and patting yourselves on the back for having such a rich, open community.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Either Songbird is an open platform developed by a community of users who are informed and whose input is valued or it’s developed behind closed doors with great resentment for anyone who doesn’t tow the line. I’ve seen a lot more of the latter as of late.
@Forest, every open source project changes plans all the time. None keep you 100% updated. Open source projects get delayed or released prematurely all the time.
Also, you are forgetting there are release trackers on the wiki for people who are interested…..
http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Releases/Kanye
Also, have you tried dropping by IRC and asking the developers yourself? Its easy to say they are hiding everything from users, when you’ve never jumped on #Songbird or #songbird-ninjas irc to speak to them…
I must agree with Forest on this guys. Ive been using Songbird since it was a little egglet and I feel like the direction it has been moving lately hasn’t been the most positive one. I don’t think it would be TOO unreasonable to ask that the birdbaths include a little bit of information as to how the newest release is coming. Many, such as myself, check quite often for new blog posts for this reason alone, and when NONE of the past 5 baths even MENTION the release, I have to wonder what is going on.
I dont think anything is being “hidden” or there is any fowl play, I just think that us, the users, need to be considered more often. Even just an update letting us know that there is nothing to know, you know?
BTW, when are we going to see this new feather we’ve been hearing so much about? I’m a bit excited to see what changes have been made.
@katana and others
While you are right about a few words in a birdbath every now and then, this info will always been outdated very quickly.
On the contrary, 2 clicks away from the home page (“To do” link), you have these links that will always give you the most up-to-date and detailed statuses for every development branch, content and planning-wise:
http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Releases/Kanye
http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Releases/Korn
http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Releases/Led_Zeppelin
and so on.
Displaying this kind of info to any user shows how much (in the good sense) consideration Songbird has for us, don’t you think?
Maybe that is the actual info that should be published in a birdbath, making this links better known from the community.
@Andrew I’m not saying they shouldn’t change their plans. I’m just saying, they ought to use the blog to keep users informed about those changes. I follow a number of other open source projects and of all of them, Songbird is by far the least inclusive of its community. For example, you mention the release trackers on the wiki, but those are basically useless. The Jackson 5 tracker has been up for months without any changes and without any explanation as to why. Likewise, a Korn tracker randomly appeared without any explanation. What is that? And there are release pages for Led Zeppelin and Madonna with big chunks of release information missing. If I didn’t know any better, I would look at those trackers and think that POTI were about to release 5 new versions of Songbird. In addition to that, there is a page outlining some new feather, but no discussion elsewhere of what this feather is and why it’s being worked on. Will it replace the current default feather? And if so, what’s wrong with the current one? Why is work being done on a new feather if there is already a perfectly good one and a number of core features still do not exist? And might I add, many of the wiki pages are misleading or incorrect. For example, the CD Rip page makes no mention of the fact that the feature is Windows-only. Isn’t that important information to spread and make known?!
As for IRC, I’ve never used IRC before. I have nothing against it, but it just wouldn’t have been my first thought on how to find out information about Songbird, especially since there is already a Songbird blog. What’s the point in having a blog about Songbird which is not actually about Songbird? This blog ought to be titled, “Songbird Developer lunch blog” because it contains more information about what POTI eats than about what they code. Most oss blogs contain snippets of thoughts on coding ideas or snapshots of upcoming releases with explanations of new features or debates on the direction that the software should take. This blog used to be like that too, but in the last year things have really changed dramatically. I miss those updates, and I miss being informed about the progress of Songbird. Please Songbird developers., make the Songbird blog about Songbird again. I don’t think it’s too much to ask!
I have to agree with most of the above. I’ve been very disappointed in the way Songbird has been progressing over the last year. In general, I hear more often about what they’re having for lunch, some random conference they were at, or some crazy internal productivity graphs they came up with… yet nothing on the software we actually care about.
It used to crack me up seeing these huge blog posts with workflow graphs and timetables (all of which must taken a very long time) with no work to show for it.
More and more the blog seems to be anything about status updates and release information.
Also, has anyone else noticed how hostile they have been towards releasing packages for Ubuntu/Fedora? Anytime I see mention of bugs or people using custom built packages they quickly dismiss them and refer back to the single linux binary on the site. People want packages that they can regularly install, not some home grown binary blob!
I had seen some reference awhile back to some of the community working on packages for Ubuntu/Fedora, but it would be nice if SOngbird actually released them officially and supported the linux community.
It’d be nice if all of Linux were supported, but I think that the workload would rather large to get each popular distribution satisfied. Having to build .debs and .rpms and whatnot would probably take a lot of time out of the work schedule, and when a significantly lower number of people use Linux than Mac/Windows, it just kinda seems to seal the deal. I mean, why don’t they start packaging .pet files for puppy linux? They should support the Linux community and do that, don’t you think?
Please don’t take this offensively, I really don’t mean to give any. They have bills to pay at the end of the day, and, like with Firefox, Linux will just take a backseat (though it still will run pretty well).
Congrats Lenny! If it wasn’t for you video, I wouldn’t have discovered “Lights”.
Also goodbye and good luck Laura. I’m sure you’ll be missed.
Thanks to everyone who makes songbird possible, and free!
@king of budgies I’ve experience the ipod problem too. Used to work but no more…
@DD: you can always get the .tar.gz file and extract it in /opt. I know it’s nice to have a deb, but i’m happy to see a x64 version of songbird. you can’t find one for thunderbird for example…
I would also like to see a release. This will force add-on developers to update their extensions. I don’t care about MSC or MTP, but I’d like to see the other extensions updated. I can’t wait to get 1.5 final! The alpha is really nice, i hope the video window will be integrated somewhere in the interface
@DD, Actually, apparently Songbird wanted to get into the official Ubuntu repository, but was rejected, because they use their own custom version of Gstreamer (kind of like the Apple app store). So I wouldn’t say they aren’t trying. Furthermore, Ubuntu rejected a one-click APT repository installation method in the past (which would have been genuinely useful).
In terms of unofficial packages, seen plenty which were TOTALLY broken. In fact, in the past, at least 1 package incorrectly linked to songbird-bin, instead of songbird to execute (an obvious mistake which proves it wasn’t tested at all). And there have been so many with weird issues which didn’t exist in the .tar.gz, which is why users are redirected to the .tar.gz (there is a good reason). Whilst unofficial packages are getting better and better, its hard for people offering support to know if the problem is caused by a bad package or not.
And linking to community supported packages is a BAD idea, security-wise. A trust based system is a poor system, and its what led to the prevalence of viruses on Windows.
I think if Ubuntu spent time trying to unify formats with Redhat and other vendors (even if done via packagekit), it would save thousands of developer hours worldwide, and open linux up to 3rd party developers more. And, it would save the distro’s plenty of time too, and speed up the development of linux itself.
Just my opinion though (not part of POTI).
Whew. lots to say on so many points.
Regarding the Linux packaging problem, I posted a blog entry summarising the issue last year. Most (all?) of the salient points are still valid. It’s not as simple as “build a .deb and shove it into Ubuntu’s or Fedora’s repos”. I’m hopeful that some of Wladimir’s recent work on preparing to update us to XULRunner 1.9.2 will help alleviate the major issues there. And while we could build our own .rpm or .deb, it wouldn’t actually be utilising any system packages – so what’s the point? It’d just be putting distribution-specific lipstick on our .tgz pig. At least this way, the .tgz is universally usable on all Linux distributions.
With regards to the releases… yes, we’ve been woefully negligent in posting blog updates as to what release is happening when, sorry. We wanted to ship Jackson 5 (1.3), but it had fairly major MTP regressions while we were building out MSC support. Kanye (1.4) was looking fairly good, but when we were done with it we found a few bugs (library management being a notable one) that we wanted to hold it up for. We started a new minor release KoЯn (1.4.1) to address those, as well as to slip in a couple of new features (MSC playlist, and the new Purple Rain Feather). There are only a couple of us working on KoЯn; in the meantime the rest of the team is moving full speed ahead on Led Zeppelin (what is slated to be the 1.5 release), the notable new work being Video work.
I know in the past we’ve been fairly diligent about publicly shipping every new release (Cher, Dokken, Eno, Fugazi, Genesis, Hendrix, and Isan) – but with Jackson 5, Kanye, and in all likelihood Led Zeppelin as well, we’ve had fairly major new features (MSC, CD-Rip, and the currently-in-development Video) which is just simply too large of a scope to easily fit into one release. When we’re done with the release we assess whether this is something we want to ship publicly to our users.. and if not, we decide whether it makes sense to do a minor release (as we’re doing with KoЯn) or not (we opted not to for Jackson 5 since all the developers were already moving onto Kanye at that point).
Also, for anyone wishing to engage in some more real-time conversation with the devs – if you’re not familiar with IRC, feel free to use our IRC-in-a-webpage to drop by #songbird and chat.
@stevel Thank you very much not only for the update, but your honesty. The flock just needs to be kept in the loop…
@coskibum
+1
Thanks stevel
@coskibum +1
@stevel +1
That, my friend, is the kind of update that we wanted, and I honestly feel quite refreshed now that I know what’s going on. I look forward to KoЯn and/or Led Zeppelin.
@stevel
Thank you so much for the update (and for taking the time to read our comments.)
So the cd rip remains a windows-only function or it will ben either on the mac os x version?
@Manu_F: OSX support wont exist in 1.4 (Kanye/Korn)… However, they have already added OSX support to 1.5 (Led Zeppelin), so it will definitely exist in that copy! (Unless an uber serious problem with it is found, which I find incredibly unlikely)
