The bird bird bird, the bird is the word. Or is the word the bird?

Thanks for the sweet bird-word artwork Lenny!
We had an interesting talk over lunch yesterday, pizza by the way, one kind (I kid you not!) had french fries, bacon and roasted garlic on it. Seriously. But I digress, we were thinking big thoughts about the future, you know, once all this core stuff is in the bag, and how we would like to integrate some fun social networking features into the application, which naturally leads us to you. How do you currently use social networks? How do you share music? Do you see these things connecting? We set up a discussion in Get Satisfaction if you want to hop in with your grand ideas. We know you got ‘em!
For those of you wondering where the heck 1.3 is, blame Preed. No, no, just kidding, blame the government.
Preed spent last week dispensing justice and serving the City and County of San Francisco on jury duty. Now that the case is closed, Preed was able to sit down and give me all the juicy details. First and foremost they found the defendant guilty. Twice. Guilty of what, you ask? Burglary and petty theft. The items in question were three bottles of Gentleman’s Jack and two bottles of Jack Daniel’s. Upon hearing that the first day, Preed knew this was the case for him! (“Hey, at least he had some taste in his whiskey!”) He got a chance to exercise his superior critical thinking skills on something other than code while learning the statutes for burglary and petty theft and how it pertained to the defendant. The complexity comes in as apparently we all break 3 of the 4 requisites for petty theft every time we go into a store as moving an item without permission is apparently verboten (can you imagine having to say):
Excuse me sir, may I please place these eggs into my shopping cart? okthxbai!
The fact that the defendant wasn’t… the most “socially well-adjusted” individual and kept yelling in the courtroom and this was the district attorney’s first case (aww) just added to the entertainment!
Preed said he’d never look at a bottle of Jack the same way again, and had a little chuckle to himself while buying a bottle last weekend. We can all hold our heads high knowing Preed dispensed justice with an iron fist for all:
Oh and now that he’s back 1.3 will be coming right up!

SubscribeDoes finishing up “all this core stuff” mean finishing it up for everyone or will you be implementing “fun social networking features” before basic core stuff works on Macs and in Linux?
Also, pizza with french fries = awesome!
Who would ever have guessed that the birdbath could bethis intriguing?
Love how you’re already planning ahead and beyond with social network integration of some kind, I’ll be sure to follow as well as participate in the discussion of this topic.
In other news: Recently released prisoner steals Liquor from birds nest.
@Lenny: I prefer Law & Order… it’s the only crime drama with the dun-dunk!
@Preed: haha, I see. Did you perhaps meet these two in court?
Oh, what a tease….. I was so sure you were about to tell us something about a new icon.
The current one is still crooked
@Forest, We are at the early stages of ideation here, so a time line is beyond me but I think it’s safe to say remaining cross platform is a priority for us so I feel optimistic that the short answer to your question is core first.
Hahaha.. You ask all the good questions Laura.. Boy will I have a LONNNGGG getsat post for you
Social Networking! Yessssss…..! GetSat is gonna go mental. This is where Songbird is going to tap in to its amazing potential some more. Gentlemen (and ladies!), start your engines…..
Can i go out on a limb and say no thanks to social networking for 2 reason: 1 there creepy, 2 i cant see this feature improving the performance and speed of songbird. if you do make please include an option to turn it off completely for us tin foil hat types
Guys, they aren’t exactly saying that its all they will be doing. Just because they add one thing in the future wont mean you cant add other stuff.
And in terms of social networking, you would need to login to use that stuff anyway (logically), so you would be at no risk of being tracked if you just didn’t login (or didn’t install the extension)
i was hoping to get the MTP support in linux with 1.3
Huh? Only one guy is developing this project? Yixe!!
Well, we do have a small team, but no, Preed is not our *only* developer. He is in charge of getting builds out which makes him a crucial part of crunch time along with QA. :0)
Social networking support would be great and all, but could get a firm commitment on core features like podcast support? There’s a huge lack of apps that can a) handle podcasts reasonably well and b) sync to non-iPod devices. Actually, there appear to be 0 programs currently out and still being maintained. Winamp might be able to do it with one of the myriads of plugins, HappyFish worked fairly well but is no longer being developed…etc.
Social Networking support would NOT be great. Add me to the list of conservative assho***. PLEASE include the option to disable all of them completely.
@Mike. Umm, they never said it would be integrated into core..
And either way, social networking requires users log in. So its simple, you just don’t login.
i was hoping to get the MTP support in linux with 1.3
