Weekly Birdbath

Isan is in the hands of our rocking QA team and we are getting thrillingly close to having the long requested equalizer in the house. If you’re already subscribed to the bug you’ve been seeing all the work going into it, but if not, you should grab a nightly and check it out.

Ruin Preed's Life
Isan Release Checklist

Preed cut a branch and we posted a release checklist that we like to call, “Ruin Preed’s Life” and if that weren’t enough he’s predicting a buildbot outage all afternoon. Poor Preed. Luckily he has new jeans that he told us to tell him make his ass look great, so if you show him some love we think he’ll be OK…til next week that is.

Murphy posted an inventive idea that, if implemented, would be a cool and simple way to help all of us non-programmers customize our media view. Nice looking out Murphy! This may not look like a hot Get Satisfaction topic yet, but I hope it turns into one soon and rallies enough support to get adopted.

For lunch we had a gallon of peanut sauce with a straw and a touch of Thai food on the side. Menu suggestions for next week welcome!

yay-communityWe were so stoked about the response to our Getting Started with Songbird pages and even more stoked by our phenomenal community that instantly set to work on translating the pages. Less than one week later there is already a Dutch translation published, with a German translation underway. I get so warm and fuzzy when we all work together.

The amount of info translated in this last week is staggering. Fantastic effort by those involved. I would love to help but unfortunately my language skills have never been a strong point of mine :-(

@Laura: Thanks for pointing out the german translation we started, maybe more people want to join in, it’s a lot of work..

@RobJN: You don’t always need perfect language skills. For example, it would be great to have the screenshots from the Getting Started Guide in translated versions. Just switch your bird to another language, take, save and publish the necessary graphics…

For those looking for the Equalizer, it hasn’t made into a nightly yet. Expect to see it appear in the nightly available on Saturday of this week :)

@ Tomas I don’t think a Spanish version has been kicked off yet so if you want to get one going in your user space and link it back here, hopefully others will join you. Thanks!

Nice post! Like it like all the birdbaths!
By the way, what about the sb_core rankings from February/March?

Another thing… How i can start translating Getting Started with Songbird to my language? So people from here can get supported in Songbird!

  12. LIB53 May 15, 2009 1:00 pm Permalink

Can’t wait for the equalizer. Songbird seems so far ahead in features with all these add-ons, but no equalizer seemed a bit off balance. Anywho, great job. :)

@ GeekShadow, Thanks but can you please bump for version compatibility again after we’ve released the first alpha build?
@DM, Another HOT TOPIC for sure. IMO it’s fun and irreverent, just like us! :-)

And still, no various artist album support. What a disappointment. No cover artwork for flac files either. Years after its birth, Songbird is still completely unusable…

Congrats on the EQ Launch. Unfortunately…
The sound quality and handling in the latest nightly which has the equalizer is bad :( . Version: Songbird 1.3.0a, Build 1093 (20090516013312)

The equalizer sounds like there is something going on it the background…constant rumblings etc. And track play is very skippy, especially if you try to move the play slider. I know it is beta and you guys will work them out, but, just in case, thought I would pass on that experience.

I think that I am usually a very positive and considerate individual, so if I sound very negative here, please understand then the extent.

  16. seba May 16, 2009 11:02 am Permalink

I also get very bad quality sound witht he equalizer on.

@deOmega: The sound skipping is a known bug and the work on this can be tracked here:
    http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16225

  17. aus May 16, 2009 12:04 pm Permalink

    @deOmega, seba

Could you guys coordinate and file a bug for the problems you are experiencing with the equalizer? All information is helpful, what kind of files you are trying to play, their bitrate and sample rate are all useful information.

Also, does the problem go away if you turn the EQ off and back on? Also try to simple move all of the sliders when the problem occurs to see if the sound re-adjusts itself.

  18. deOmega May 16, 2009 6:03 pm Permalink

Hmm. I see the bug that seba filed. Geez, this was a known issue, but I never had an issue with it until I tried the aforementioned nightly. And now that the equalize is involved. I am not sure I know where to start.

The skipping happens whether the EQ is on or off, as well as with various settings. Will have to look closer for bit rate etc when i have some time.

    As for the rumbling:
It happens on every EQ setting I have tried, but goes away when i turn the EQ off.

  19. Brian May 16, 2009 7:43 pm Permalink

Personally, the nightly has no problems besides UI ones. No rumblings with the EQ, no skipping, just a UI issue with the filter panes.

  20. Brian May 16, 2009 8:20 pm Permalink

I guess I spoke too soon. I’ve now had a couple skipping issues, and the UI fixed itself upon restart. I still don’t have any issues with the EQ yet.

Forget the equalizer … where’s the photo of Preed wearing those new jeans?! ;)

  22. deOmega May 17, 2009 12:06 pm Permalink

    Regarding EQ issue:
To reproduce this in a noticeable manner, pull all of the frequencies down to
their lowest point and turn up your volume.

If it is not noticeable, be thankful. :)

Thank you so much for mentioning the suggestion, Laura; the topic has been more successful than I ever imagined it could be. I’ll keep making mockups until I run out of ideas. And Michael, you are right, there have been so many exciting add-ons released lately. They have definitely been the highlight of the week. :)

  25. Leechboy May 20, 2009 6:47 am Permalink

How about ditching all the peripheral rubbish and fixing the number 1 reason people aren’t switching over – The usless Ipod support. None of the other stuff matters until you work out how to fully integrate it properly. Till then, all you’ve got is a pretty but but useless library program.

Uhm….sorry about the OT, but….Is the Bugzilla working?
I’m actually trying to send a bug report, but the trac won’t load….I hit the “Commit” button and “wait for Bugzilla.songbirdnest.com” for a coupla minutes, then FF gaves me the default connection cancelled screen….it’s like the server’s not responding….could anyone please check?

  27. Laura May 21, 2009 6:56 am Permalink

@ Tw@in: Hmm, everything looks good this morning. Sorry for your trouble. Want to give it another shot now?

this eq issue we sure it is related to song bird cos ive been trying to replicate the issue on my pc and i cannot get this rumble that is being reported. also i think device support is pretty good i dont own an ipod (cos i want good sound quality :P ) but all my cowon and iriver players work perfectly both in mtp and msc modes so no problem with device support as far as im concerned so far now that a eq is included in song bird ive swapped from media monkey for good this time and just want to say song bird is AWESOME and sound quality is excellent with a pair of shure Se420′s :D

  33. leigh May 27, 2009 2:51 am Permalink

actually just did some playing around with the eq and yes there is indeed a rumble (wasnt using songbird eq b4 lol)

  34. Jason Saggers Sep 28, 2009 11:18 pm Permalink

Sound quality isn’t to bad here. Not quiet as good as what itunes was but its getting there.
Does songbird use its own codecs etc or does it use what is installed on the system?
