Songbird 1.1 Update

By ali ali Permalink

There’s a new incremental update available for users of Songbird 1.1.  There aren’t any new features, but we fixed a few bugs that cropped up in the original 1.1 release.  You can find more details about the new fixes in the Release Notes.

Your Bird will let you know within 24 hours about the available update to version 1.1.2.  If you just can’t wait, go to the Help menu and choose Check For Updates for instant Birdification.

    What would be the best way for me to update? I’m using Songbird on Ubuntu 9.10 (x64), and Help > Check For Updates is grayed out.

  2. ali Apr 8, 2009 4:12 pm Permalink

    @Ginger Your Songbird installation probably isn’t writable by your user id. You can change the permissions on the main Songbird directory to be owned by you, or you can launch Songbird as root (ha!) to get the update.

    Nice. Thanks for the update. Any chance for working out the podcasts/subscription problems? Haven’t been able to get npr to work yet…

    @ali: Thank you! Changing the permissions of /usr/share/Songbird worked beautifully! Also, I can now check for updates for my add-ons. :D

    @ali: Could Songbird on linux give you an error message about the permissions and maybe even an admin prompt to change the permissions with 1 click and your password?

    Just some iseasd. I just started using Songbird because I like Sourcedorge.
    1- Make a button to switch between mini and full mode
    2 – Make it possible to change skin in mini mode.
    3 – add “options” to mini mode menu
    4 – Make the best AUDIO player you can – don’t worry about video
    5 – make as many codecs as possible available
    6 – Have library screen and hilight bar follow “now playing” song
    7 – Add option to gegin Songbird at startup
    8- Built in EQ

    Just trying to put in my 2 cents worth. Can’t wait to see what songbird grows into

    Hey folks !

    Aren’t you going to fix the issue to let the user choose a sidepane for a an add-on that was introduced in 1.1 ?

  9. Lyrical Apr 9, 2009 4:42 am Permalink

    This is a little update but I like this ;-)

  10. Lyrical Apr 9, 2009 4:50 am Permalink

    Please put an automatic root with Linux Ubuntu!
    Because, I have to do all the time
    “sudo songbird”

  11. forest Apr 9, 2009 6:17 am Permalink

    @Lyrical, Ginger

    You really should not be running Songbird as root. It’s a huge security risk, and anytime you run something as root, there’s also always the risk that it will overwrite something on your hard drive or screw up files.

    To do things properly, you should change the permissions on the Songbird directory as Ali suggested. Or better yet, just reinstall Songbird in your home directory, whose permissions are always owned by you.

  12. Lyrical Apr 9, 2009 7:30 am Permalink

    @forest : Thanks
    I Have an other question : when I have run SongBird in root mode.
    Now, when I put SongBird normaly (without root), it put a new account, without my add-ons,…And if I put again in sudo mode, I have the good songbird (with my add-ons,…).

  13. dermutti Apr 9, 2009 7:41 am Permalink

    Thanks so much SongBird Dev Team. It’s really nice to have a media player that sends out meaningful updates, as opposed to updates that only make it easier to buy more from the developer (I’m looking at you, iTunes!).

  14. Boris Apr 9, 2009 8:48 am Permalink

    @Ginger
    Once you’ve changed the permissions for Songbird, you can go to Tools->Add-ons and click ‘Find Updates’ button under the add-ons list.

  15. katana346 Apr 9, 2009 9:23 am Permalink

    None of the add-ons work with the update… let’s hope developers start working to fix this.

  16. forest Apr 9, 2009 9:30 am Permalink

    @Lyrical

    “when I put SongBird normaly (without root), it put a new account, without my add-ons,…And if I put again in sudo mode, I have the good songbird (with my add-ons,…).”

    The problem you describe happens because every user on your computer has a different “profile” in Songbird. Imagine that 10+ different people were going to use your computer, each with separate user names and logins. Each of those people might have different needs from Songbird; they might want to use different feathers; they would almost certainly have different libraries of music, and they also probably prefer different add-ons. To deal with this problem, Songbird creates a “profile” for each user on your computer. When you start Songbird, it loads up your user name’s profile so that everything is setup just the way you want it. The root user, is a different user from your regular account. Therefore, the root user has a different profile with different add-ons, etc. To correct the problem, just install the same add-ons under your regular account as you had installed as the root user.

    Hope that helps. :-)

  17. Lyrical Apr 9, 2009 10:31 am Permalink

    @forest : Thank you very much forest! Now I understand the problem.
    I have only 1 user but the root is like 1 more.

    Thank you for you’re help!

    An other thing :
    It would be good if the flash was on Songbird by default, because I have to do (after the installation) :

    sudo cp /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so /usr/share/Songbird/plugins

  18. ali Apr 9, 2009 11:59 am Permalink

    @katana346 which add-ons aren’t working for you?

  19. ali Apr 9, 2009 1:31 pm Permalink

    @Yves The change to tie add-ons to a specific pane was a deliberate one. We hadn’t seen any add-ons that looked good when displayed in any one of the three display panes (including our own). There’s more information in bug 12656 (http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=12656).

    1. pane buttons
    2. pure player
    3. MiniPlaylist .. addresses some of your menu requirements.

    Just search for them in addons.

    feathers were my main concern at the time, luckily those have been updated and are working fine. Still not working(although I’m not sure if they even worked for 1.1.1, I don;t use them all too often) are:
    Shuffle/repeat miniplayer buttons
    Seeqpod
    MinTrayR (the other version has NEVER worked for me – this addon I do miss)
    Magnatune
    BirdBridge
    and
    Album View

    @Katana346:
    About MinTrayR: The Songbird Add-on site hasn’t been updated for a while, but you can download & install the Add-on directly from the developers site. There is the newest version, and it’s working fine :)

    I downloaded s-bird yesterday for my Ubuntu desktop. I mainly use a MBPro and am happy with itunes/iphone. However I was not impressed with the offerings in Ubuntu for ipodnicks. I downloaded the source and was unable to get the songbird files into /opt. So I managed to get them into my home dir. Then dble clicked on songbird…and itworked! Somehow I was able to make the icon(lil bird) match and setup a launcher. Dont ask me how I did it, Id never be able to do it again.haha. However now that I have it,(Im new to linux and songbird) Will I be able to sync?Iphones only sync. If not I can use the Mac. Does it honor the playlists and stuff created under itunes?Will I have any problems updating etc with songbird in my home dir? It is right there with my Music,Documents,Videos..same level. Just wondering.

    with its cool icon and even cooler home page with all cool stuff and a skreemr search engine (i can even do with any search engine, actually) and cool icon. (i know there is too much “cool” in this sentence)

    Hi SB-team. I’m totally new to SB, but the layout and general GUI is very appealing and intuitive.

    First of all; I’m sorry if this is the wrong forum.

    There is a few things about SB though;

    1: I have added a few of my favorite poscast rss feeds to the playlists. On the surface it works fine. SB starts downloadning immediately. However – when SB starts downloading a new file, a progress window appears – in my case there’s quite a lot of files, and it’s really annoying to see this progressbar flashing in and out all the time. When I want to change settings in SB, the settings dialog is moved behind the main window when the progressbar appears. Apparently there is no way to prevent the progressbar from showing. The progressbar appears and disappears so fast that I can’t make anything of it anyway. What is that progress window doing anyway – except p… me off?
    This is extremely annoying, and I’ve had to pause downloads alltogether (which I have to do every time I start- or restart SB ! (see below) )

    2: When I play any station on Last.fm radio, SB crashes roughly every 45 sec. – not so good.

    I’m running on a XP’pro Intel dual core with plenty memory, and I have a 10 Mbit DSL I.net-connection.

    Has anyone but me experienced this?

    Is there any enhancement planned for upgrading the performance to be able to handle more than 20.000 Songs in the library?

    My player crashes all the time if I search for songs :(

  37. Tatsuyame Apr 14, 2009 3:18 am Permalink

    Something weird is happening to me in the addons portion of the settings window.
    When I use the arrow keys, it switches tabs in that section, which is expected I guess. But the weird thing is, there is a third ghost tab. This is a copy of the Extensions tab, but it contains Cobalt Firefox and iPox Aqua (two THEMES I had ages ago for FIREFOX) How in the world did they end up in in my SB profile??

    Screenshot here: http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s42/tatsuyame/songbirdWTF.png

    I’m tempted to override compatibility just to see what the hell would happen, but idk if SB has a safemode like Firefox does.

  38. Tatsuyame Apr 14, 2009 3:23 am Permalink

    @myself lol
    I just checked my Firefox and Thunderbird, and they both have a theme tab along with an extension tab and update tab in that window…so is this Songbird’s theme tab, that is normally hidden? Still don’t know why those themes are there though.

  39. aus Apr 14, 2009 10:48 am Permalink

    @Blacksheep

    We’re working on fixing the search crash issues for the next release. All current information points to a slightly corrupted database that causes this issue. A quick way to solve the problem would be to create a new profile using the profile manager. You can launch Songbird with the profile manager like so: ’songbird -p’

  40. ali Apr 14, 2009 4:22 pm Permalink

    @Tatsuyame You found the hidden ghost tab! Congrats! (it’s a bug — http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14801) I, too, have no idea why your old themes are showing up.

  41. ali Apr 14, 2009 6:31 pm Permalink

    @Frank Sorensen The dialog you’re seeing during download may have something to do with Watch Folders. Go to Preferences -> Media Importer and turn off the Watch Folders checkbox. Does that make the dialog stop popping up?

    When Songbird crashes, do you get the Songbird crash reporter? Have you submitted those reports to us?

  42. flo@fam-heft.de Apr 15, 2009 8:00 am Permalink

    PLEASE fix the bugs and make it the BEST audioplayer instead of adding video support (as sb said some posts before).
    SB could be rly great (as I don’t want to use WMP, Winamp or iTunes), but at current state its quite unusable because of all the bugs :(

  43. Jonathan Apr 15, 2009 9:00 am Permalink

    @flo

    I totally agree. SB is buggy and unstable. It frequently crashes during searches, corrupts the audio player, and can’t be left open for any extended length of time.

    I love the interface. I love the features. It’s the best media player for linux/unix. I’m just an end user, so I don’t have any real insight except to suggest that the developers continue to work on making SB the most stable OSS media player available.

    Thanks for your continued efforts.

    I’m with flo & jonathan:

    Please focus more on bug-gixing & polishing existing features than on new features.

    I started using another media-player again, because it’s just no fun to use buggy Songbird. :-(

    I already filed to bugzilla all bugs i’ve found (most of them were already filed by others).

    My most annoying bug is that one, which doesn’t seem to get _any_ attention, even if a lot of people are reporting about it on Getsatisfation etc…

    Hi folks,

    First let me thank you a lot, for this beautiful peace of software.

    I do get problems under ubuntu, but now now under archlinux it’s run far better.

    I do have bugs, i live with and I wont complain about them.

    Like some people here, i like songbird as a music player.
    VLC already exist, i don’t need another player for vidz.
    Or i do want this feature if it just get the sound, and play it like a song.

    Songbird do already great, polishing the output may be so usefull:
    - On import check the file that are not supported, those protected by DRM
    - When a problem happend to play a file give us all informations you can: why, wich one where, how to fix it or if we cannot how people can help.

    Another feature that will be helpful is export(s).
    As I’m not able to develop such things to propose a embeddable solution, so i do it by hand (script).

    That my two cents.

    I thank you again for your work, time and friendliness.

    Regards
    Kyzh

  54. kale22 Apr 21, 2009 4:37 am Permalink

    Hi, I love songbird but still I find the memory usage “a bit too much”.. Could there be a lite-version which everything is removed (e.g. the web-browser etc.)? I think this would “hit the spot” for us Linux-users who are concerned with the memory usage.. Of course I can checkout the code and rip everything that is “extra” off and build it again but would a separate “lite-branch” be too much from maintenance point of view..? Just thinking aloud.

  55. katana346 Apr 21, 2009 10:27 am Permalink

    I really like kale22’s idea, and feel this would be a huge thing for people who don’t see the web-side of the programs functionality.

  56. André Lapointe Apr 23, 2009 2:30 pm Permalink

    I must say, a lite version would be very great. I love Songbird, but I still prefer using it along with Firefox.

  57. Ronald Suwandi Apr 23, 2009 8:53 pm Permalink

    I totally agree with kale22’s idea. I would love to have songbird without the web browser. It’s a bit redundant since I already have firefox.. But again, without the web browser it’s no longer songbird.. Songbird is a web-browser music player.

    But honestly, I don’t see the point of having another browser embedded in a music player :|

    Ever since the update, several things have been dysfunctional and driving me nuts. First, the watch folders simply does not work. Worked initially but nothing going now (no major changes to the system). Also, some add-ons like YABS simply don’t work either, tried uninstalling/reinstalling to no avail..
    I’m eager to default my media to Songbird but basic features like watch folders are a must…the love affair may be over..back to MediaMonkey we go.
