Adopt a Stevo Add-on

By stevel stevel Permalink

If you’re a Songbird user, chances are you’ve got at least one of Stevo’s add-ons installed.  In addition to hacking on multiple Songbird features, Stevo has implemented a ton of Songbird add-ons including Album Art Manager, Album View, Album List, FocusTrack, etc.

(Un)fortunately, Stevo has been spending all of his time working on core Songbird features and hasn’t had the time to give the TLC to his add-ons that they demand.

If you’re interested in stepping up and taking over maintenance of any of Stevo’s add-ons, he could really use the help.  Just leave a comment here (with your email address) and we’ll get in touch and coordinate a code hand off.

The following three are in pretty good shape and should be pretty straight-forward to take over:

The remaining add-ons are:

FocusTrack etc would just need max version updated, no?

  2. Pino Mar 3, 2009 12:15 pm Permalink

Are these GPL licensed then? I remember the addons being proprietary licensed and only Songbird itself being GPL or am I completely wrong?

@Gfaja – That may be true for this release, but it’ll undoubtedly need more ongoing love as we make new Songbird releases (especially so if APIs change, etc.). We’re looking for ongoing maintainers willing to look after the code and update them as we move forward.

@Pino – The MTP, iPod, Windows Media, and Quicktime add-ons are proprietary licensed. All our other add-ons are open source, generally under the BSD license.

Damn. Again a reminder for me to step up and learn to code…

    *sigh*
I would so love to be able to do that. I’m just too lazy and taken up by work and family business…

    But please!! Folks!!
Someone step in and make “Album List” happen. I’m longing for that one for months now.

    See you on getsatisfaction.com,
    Tyler out!

I have been meaning to get back on the bandwagon again. I can (try to) manage skip track on shuffle.

I’ll take over FocusTrack, I wrote one extension for Firefox that I barely remember a couple years back. Quick perusal through the xpi and it looks like what I remember. I’m willing to get back on that horse if nobody with major extension experience has the time.

It’s too essential to go unloved, I can’t believe that anyone can survive without it! Email was left in the posting form, let me know what needs to be done.

Thanks to all who have stepped up, this is a great load off my shoulders, I love these add ons and would hate to see them just fade away. For anyone who takes them over I am always on IRC:irc.mozilla.org#songbird and willing to help answer questions.

As for the AlbumView, it currently has some C++ code but it does not need to be in C++ it can be converted quite easily to JS and I can give a hand with that.

The main problems with AlbumView and AlbumList are going to be performance, someone with some xul/js skills can probably think of a way to have it only display what is needed (kinda like treeview). Also once Songbird defines albums that will help (cross fingers).

Notify Me is the only one that really requires C++ since it links in with Snarl and libnotify.

Also as stevel says these are all marked as BSD license.

I would love to apprentice/collaborate with the person who takes album view. I have two reasons: I love the idea. I want to learn C++.(BTW, I have some basic understanding of Java)

  11. Moshy Mar 3, 2009 8:19 pm Permalink

I can do Album View, although I downloaded the xpi and can’t see any C++. I don’t want to do Album List though because I’m already working on something similar.

Ooh Kamisamanou I somehow missed your comment, we can do it together!

If needed, I could help with updating MoreGonzo.
I have added MoreGonzo support in my themes (Walnut and Walnut2).

    * Album List – Moshy? (take for other add on?)
    * Notify Me
    * More Gonzo – Alfred Kayser

Moshy – If your already working on something simular to AlbumList you can grab the code for my AlbumList and use what you want throw away the rest, I don’t mind if an add on I was doing gets replaced by a new one :) .

Thanks again all only 2 (maybe 3) left to go!!! Rock on!

Note: Not all add-ons on the site are up to date, some new code is in the svn, particularly for AlbumView and NotifyMe.

  16. Moshy Mar 5, 2009 12:53 am Permalink

Ok I’ll take Album List in that case. The one I’m doing is actually Catalogue, which I’m resurrecting, and I’ll probably rename it to Album List now since it resembles it more now.

    Awesome

Ready for ScribeFire :) Will you modify user access ?

  18. Lenny (Schwadegan) Mar 5, 2009 2:06 pm Permalink

I don’t have the programming knowledge required to develop add-ons like these, but I do know how to create feathers, so I’ll just keep the bird classy as long as I can ;-)

Oooch.. I can see that ChangeFilters is still orphan :)
Unfortunately, my dev skill are limited to tweak the install.rdf files to make extensions compatible.

Speaking of which, could anyone do it for ChangeFilter on the addon site- just make it compliant with sb 1.1.1?

This easy update would allow SB to support the AlbumArtist concept, which is being asked by many users, or potential users.

    Thanks in advance
