Songbird 1.1 Beta 2 is now available for download!
Here are the most noteworthy and complete features we’d like to call out in this Beta and get your feedback on:
- Watch Folders
You can choose to watch a folder hierarchy for changes and the content will auto-magically be imported in your library. If a file is removed from the watched folder, the corresponding track will be deleted from your Library. - Better Sorting
Library sorting supports unicode collation and better handling of leading definite and indefinite articles such as “The” and “a”. - Replay gain support (normalization)
If a track’s metadata contains replay gain (including iTunes-specific) information, Songbird will adjust the playback gain appropriately. - MP3 Store (Beta)
We’ve partnered with 7digital to bring you the highest quality MP3s (320kbps). You can easily search, purchase, organize and get recommendations directly into Songbird. The UK store is fully stocked, but the US and other European stores are still continuing to populate a complete catalog of music. We’re still working out the kinks for this Beta 2 release, so if you find an issue, please let us know.
The Beta 2 release notes contain additional details about this build including a list of known issues.
As always, please file any issues, bugs, or crashes you find in Bugzilla so that we can address them before the final release.
Bloggers & Press: This release is not our final release and is not ready to be reviewed. Since we’re still landing code we suggest postponing any review of the Songbird Player until our final build. If you’re interested in reviewing the final build contact us at: press [at] songbirdnest [dot] com. We’ll be more than happy to give you access to it prior to its release. Thanks for the care and attention you’ve shown Songbird over the past year.

which nightly build does this correspond to? I am using Feb 26 nightly, should I overwrite it with beta2 or am I already basically using it?
@sebastian,
Beta 2 is build 994. You can check your version in About Songbird… menu.
UH OH!! The bird is un-screwing the bolt!!! Hope that’s a good thing….
Very observant of you, unless it’s a left-handed thread, in which case, all is safe. Righty-tighty anyone
Hey guys, thanks for the great work. Slight bug with the new sorting rules though, albums (and I guess artists/genres) that are all punctuation aren’t showing up.
I guess that’s the price I pay for having strange albums like Sigur Ros’s “( )”.
Oh and also Justice’s “†”
Bug sumbitted … I really should read posts all the way through before commenting.
Is there a way to upgrade from beta one to beta 2? The “Check for Updates” option is grayed out.
@Nate:
I can’t be 100% sure without more information, but the “Check for Updates” option being grayed out typically means you’ve installed Songbird to a directory that you don’t have write permissions to. So, on Linux if you installed it as root, say, or on a Mac, if you installed it as another user, or on Windows as an administrator.
In this case, the update would fail, so it doesn’t offer it as an option.
You can solve this by running the application as the user you installed it as, and checking for updates, or reinstalling the application under your own user’s home directory.

Build Dude
I just updated b1 to b2 with the “check for updates” on the help menu.
The second beta is posible to update using the autoupdate feature getting only download by incremental updates or full updates?
If i have only 1.0, what happen with the profile? the same like mozilla products( “mozillaprod -p”)
I have tried to install this as root so everyone that logs into the pc can run Songbird with one install. Can one of you Linux experts give me a chmod command I can run to set the permissions properly to allow me to run this? TIA.
@Boris Silva
Yes, profile management in Songbird works like other Mozilla apps. The -p or -ProfileManager command line option will launch Songbird with the Profile Manager so you can pick which profile it should use. This way you can have a 1.1 profile and a 1.0 if you like
Together with this brand new beta, there is now also a brand new theme: Walnut2.
Check it out at http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1454
Boris actually makes a good point.. Delta updates for large extensions or songbird itself could be a good thing, especially for testing nightlies, where only 1 file (100kb worth of delta update) may change per day.
Could save a lot of bandwidth overall, and make songbird 56K modem happy.
@Boris & @Andrew Lueck: We provide incremental (delta’d) and complete updates for b1 to b2 updates, and will do so for the last beta-to-final as well as 1.0 to 1.1 updates, not unlike Firefox and Thunderbird.
@Tom Miller: Yeah, we don’t get this quite right now; that’s bug

Hey, just trying out this new beta. The feature I use most is broken; shuffle. Chosing previous song just stops playing and deletes the playlist. Fix this please, since I use Songbird to shuffle my songs mainly. If you just heard a good song and want to hear it again you can’t go back
.
@Pino
This is already fixed and will be part of 1.1 Final.
Does anyone else still get the bug where Songbird freezes for seconds at a time when only one character is entered in a library seach? Other than that great looking beta. Love the 7 digital shop.
Woah! The watch folders feature is exactly what I’ve been waiting for!!!
Bravo! Good work!!! You’ve made my day
Slate8. I do unfortunately, and I have posted a bug report (as I agree it is a bit annoying). http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15511
Hopefully the guys will get it fixed in Isan (April release, which is starting to suspiciously sound like it may delayed a tiny bit later, considering Hendrix was due February originally).
I don’t think it will make it to Hendrix/1.1 though, judging by Mook’s sigh on IRC when it was mentioned, and because it doesn’t sound like something that is safe to add late beta (but prove me wrong).
Either way, Songbird is at the point that I can finally use it as my primary music player though as of 1.1, and am not looking back (especially because of the concerts plugin and watched folders) . CD Ripping isn’t a necessity for me, as I now use EAC (which is standalone anyway), but when it is added, I might use the CD ripping in Songbird. Only thing missing is Replay Gain Calculation
Gotta still use my old player for that at the moment.
@aus:
K, cool, everything else looks good. Only the 7digital site is broken; it links me to http://nl.7digital.com/songbird/error/servererror
Great work with the 7Digital Music Store.
Any chance that this could happen with the AmazonMP3 store?
@slate8: I have that problem too, however after 10 seconds or something it starts to work again. I think it’s just a performance problem. But I really feel search in 1.0 was faster.
Also when browsing through a song using the faceplate (clicking on the progress bar on various times), songbird often freezes and the sound stutters (and I have to restart songbird). Sometimes I get this after 5 clicks, sometimes after 100 clicks. Is anybody else able to reproduce this.
So just try clicking on various locations on the progress bar, try atleast 50 times, and don’t click too fast.
The Watch Folders feature works (running build 994) even on Fedora 10 with tracks served by OpenSolaris box (with the ZFS goodness) via NFS. Cool stuff.
@Seba.. Actually, I noticed it starts getting fast after a while too.. I thought it was some weird caching mechanism after the first few searches..
But now that you mention it, you may be correct..
Does the cursor automatically follow the currently playing song yet? Or is there at least the option for this?
hi,
nice build boys
there is a sync module on it (does someone know if the PPC sync gonna works one day or how to make it work)
we were talking here
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/why_wont_my_htc_p4350_sync_with_songbird_1_0?utm_content=topic_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=reply_notification
but no one have answers about
thanks a keep this really god job
i think that’s a bug: you can drop links on the media tab, and it opens the page. should i file a bug for that? i randomly noticed it maybe it was the same with the earlier releases too..
Why doesn’t Songbird use the folder.jpg album covers from my folders anymore? All the old albums use them correctly but the ones added after updating to 1.1 betas don’t.
I don’t want to drag the covers to each track individually. Please just use the folder.jpg’s that the folders contain…
Don’t know it that will work, but try to Rescan the album art for your entire library in SB 1.1b2. Maybe the images will be fetched, added to the DB (and maybe also added to the MP3 file itself).
Does fetching the album art really make Songbird attach the images to every single mp3 in my library? Because that sounds like a truly horrible thing… I don’t want my mp3’s altered for no viable reason.
Songbird should just use them internally or better yet save folder.jpg’s atleast when a folder contains a single album.
@SlugO
You can choose the behaviour you want.
Please go and check here:

hi,
am i right that songbird shows in the hendrix version the old cool birdouse(birdhouse.songbirdnest.com)?
Does fetching the album art really make Songbird attach the images to every single mp3 in my library? Because that sounds like a truly horrible thing… I don’t want my mp3’s altered for no viable reason.
i use version is beta1 ,is the beta 2 is add the sort functions about mp3 and folder?if this, i think beta 1 is not to update for use.
