1.0 Add-ons!

By stevel stevel Permalink

For everyone downloading Songbird 1.0, make sure you check out some of our recommended add-ons.  These are add-ons that aren’t part of the first-run bundle, but are still awesome and add a ton of features to Songbird.

  • LyricMaster (more than just fetching lyrics… LyricMaster lets you save them back to the file, edit them via the metdata editor, style/theme the panel to match your Feather, etc.)
  • MediaFlow (lets you flip through your album art)
  • Music Recommendations (pulls up Last.fm recommendations based on your currently playing track)
  • LiveTweeter (post your listening status and tracks played to Twitter, MSN/Windows Live Messenger, Pidgin, & Mercury)
  • Notify Me (uses Growl [Mac], Snarl [Windows], or libnotify [Linux] notifications for track changes)
  • seeqpod (an awesome search interface for the SeeqPod search engine)
  • Mac Remote Control (adds support for the Apple Remote Control to Songbird for Mac users)
  • YABS (hands down one of the best Feathers out there.  a personal favourite of many Songbirders, this is a really slick dark Feather with support for many add-ons like Media Flow, mashTape & LyricMaster as well)

What’s really awesome is that most of these are developed by community members and Songbird users (seeqpod, Notify Me, and Mac Remote Control are the exceptions).  For many of these developers and designers, this was their first Mozilla extension development experience… and now they’re some of our most popular add-ons implementing oft-requested features with tens of thousands of downloads each.

If you’ve got some experience with Javascript, CSS, and HTML or XUL – it’s pretty straight-forward to get started developing your own extensions or creating your own Feathers.

Just discovered songbird – whales the tar out of itunes. BigUp to the songbird team. How does one contribute code?

    An EQ?
Just wondering if I’m missing it or if it’s available.
It would be nice to be able to adjust tone quality. Even an 8 bit EQ would be nice.
    Is there anything available?

    Thanks,
    MrSlik

I wonder why do you recommend MediaFlow when Songbird claims the addon is not compatible with 1.0

  5. stevel Dec 4, 2008 1:30 pm Permalink

@Vadim – Because it IS compatible with 1.0. Go check the version history page for yourself, or pull apart the .xpi. It definitely is compatible with 1.0.

I love Songbird. In my humble opinion an iTunes killer. A clean, light program with the ability to add or remove functions you like or dislike. Just the way I want it!
One downside (for the time being): Will there be a gapless playback option, like there is in iTunes? This is really a musthave in my opinion.

I am sad to say that my favorite addon JumpTo Feathers was not ready for version 1.0.
This fabulous addon that turns the program into a perfect winamp killer must come back…
    The link is here

    I am so sad :(

I’ll do whatever it takes to get on the “recommended add-on list” with my Sparkle!
Since 1.0 release the downloads have spiked and that’s just plain awesome!

All my <3 to the community!

Songbird Ver. 1.0.0 might work better if the installer:
    A)CHECKED FOR EARLIER VERSIONS
    b)OVERWROTE SAID EARLIER RELEASE(S)
It doesn’t. Mine became confused, after importing the music library (which worked FINE in the early release) It then could only play one out of ten songs without crashing and displaying error messages.
Both birds are now HISTORY. Uninstalled. AND…I edited my hive, and cleaned up the bits of “eggshell” left behind.

I say we need an Ipod update down loader…for more compatibility…that way Itunes isn’t needed at all :P

  11. Kaliree Dec 4, 2008 7:51 pm Permalink

I would really like to see one more category added to the organizational columns (you know, like Name, Title, Bit Rate, etc). One that I find very useful is listing by FILE TYPE. In Itunes they call it “Kind” and MediaMonkey calls it “Type”, but unless I am missing it – I don’t see that option in Songbird. Please add that in someone. :)

I think a way for Songbird to manage podcast subscriptions should be integrated. Then I could completely get rid of iTunes.

  13. capsized Dec 5, 2008 1:06 am Permalink

definitely the eq, one of the first things i was looking for.

could you maybe introduce a feature voting system so that the community can submit and vote for features?

I wonder, there is a plugin called Dynamic Library for Winamp, is there anything like this for Songbird?

I’m a big fan of the Songbird alarm clock, and the system tray add-ons. I also think last.fm scrobbling is essential, but would actually love a full last.fm player/radio integration thrown in as well!

I’m not sure if this is a Songbird issue or elsewhere but I’m baffled as to exactly how the album art works. Previously I added album art in itunes to most of my mp3s. The weird thing is that some of it shows up in song bird and some of it doesn’t. Just today I tagged some new albums in itunes with album art and when viewed in songbird the art doesn’t show up. Any ideas why this might be?

LyricMaster is a good add-on, but far from perfect.

i thought it could not only download lyric online automatically, but also highlight the sentence of lyric that song is playing.

Support for syncing/transfering album art (embedded or *.jpg in album folder) on your ipod + gapless playback is a must! When when when I want to give iTunes the boot so bad…

  27. Igloos On The Moon Dec 6, 2008 4:53 am Permalink

Ok. It looks like itunes. it has some add ons ( i really don’t know the difference between add on and plugin, but whatever) but most of them are secondary.

the most important in a music player are features to ‘play music’ with quality (EQ), controlling or shuffling the sequence (shuffle on or off) and controlling the lenght (a good CROSSFADER)… …then convert songs from cds to mp3 or other extensions, then covers, colors etc…. there are lots of players out there, the magic is to create a hybrid between itunes and winamp (the top ones)!!!!

Will 1.0 import my album art from Album Art Manager? And what about my ShoutCast support?

  29. Mister Potato Dec 6, 2008 7:54 am Permalink

I am really disappointed because album art is no longer developed. It makes MediaFlow, for example, really unuseful. Now, if I want to add a cover for all my library I’d have to expend several hours doing so, while it could be done in some seconds with Album Art Manager before.

Now, if I use MediaFlow, I only get some few covers and plenty of empty cds… I try to fetch some of the covers putting LastFM Album art and copying it to the now playing artwork but they are not saved, so they are missing next time I open SongBird. In addition, all the artwork that I fetched with Album Art Manager is missing…

I really hope that this can be solved. That was a great add-on and SongBird is not so good without it.

  30. deOmega Dec 6, 2008 9:37 am Permalink

    Strange thing here:

Apparently, I have album art in my metadata somewhere or something, but they are not showing up in Album art of mediaflow…However, the strangest thing:

When i use this SOngnotifier addon: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/39

It Picks Up The Album Art That I KNEW I had, but just not seeing in songbird!! IS this something that songbird needs to duplicate? Or is he pulling the art from the web? I doubt he is pulling from the web because they are the exact art I had before.. some were manually placed.

  31. Bob Mottram Dec 6, 2008 9:43 am Permalink

Reading the license agreement for Songbird I’m concerned that the additional terms specified, particularly sections 2.2 and 10, may not be compliant with distribution under a GPL v2 license. The following phrase struck me as very odd indeed:

“To the extent that any of the terms and conditions of this Agreement conflict with the GPLv2 and POTI’s exception, the conflicting terms and conditions of this Agreement shall not apply to the Songbird Media Player.”

Since I’m not a legal expert I’ve submitted this for further analysis.

@Xero: I haven’t heard about your problem before. Can you give me any details about your problem? Which OS do you use? Have you got MoreGonzo installed?

  34. deOmega Dec 6, 2008 4:04 pm Permalink

    @ atreiu, Xero,

That has happened to me too, but I do not think it is related to Yabs. It is related to probably MoreGonzo and the default theme, because, when i switched from any other theme I have tried to the default gonzo, it goes to the MoreGonzo medium player, instead of the main Gonzo window.

  35. atreiu Dec 7, 2008 2:06 am Permalink

@Deomega: I have that problem, too! And yeah, it has nothing to do with YABS, i just have tested it on a new profile. Like you said, every time i switch back to default Gonzo from any other feather, Songbird goes Medium-Player. :-/

Nice list. I can’t wait til more people get songbird and start making skins. Right there’s only 12, and Graphite, being rubberducky based, doesn’t work. Can i to request a top ten of these too, if that isn’t too much to ask for for?

Actually Media Flow is not compatible with 1.0 as the add on “album art manager” is not and it is required by media flow

  41. stevel Dec 8, 2008 9:07 am Permalink

@timbo – Actually “Album Art Manager” isn’t required for Media Flow anymore since album art was integrated into Songbird.

I really like Songbird but I’ve a couple of issues with the add-ons.

    1. Metadata Editor: This is good *but* doesn’t show you the file-name. Most of the data I import carries the “meta-data” IN THE FILE-NAME and folder; having the folder & filename in the Editor pop-up would greatly enhance my productivity.

    2. Taglib hasn’t made it to Songbird 1.0, and indeed seems to be languishing in the cob-webbed section. This is annoying as I can’t add MP3 2.4 tags without.

I’m a programmer and I’d like to contribute patches to both these add-ons. How do I do this?

  46. hamiltoj Dec 14, 2008 8:06 am Permalink

I like Songbird, too, but I also have a few issues:
    1) the help section keeps losing my password or account name
    2) none of the ipod add-ons work with my build. It makes no sense to me why they don’t work.

  49. Areteo Dec 25, 2008 8:53 pm Permalink

I really like Songbird, but it lacks the one feature I require to use a music player. The ability to “Play Folder.” All my music is organized by folders and subfolders, and I hate playlists. Sigh.

Also, the addon server has given me the 500 Internal Error since 1.0 launched (never tried it before that). Windows XP Professional, SP3, Firefox 3.05.
