Great work guys.
Zero problems on my end, other than a comment on the icon. I also see slight memory improvement.
I am in the camp of liking the icon when i saw the previews. it is great to be able to see the songbird icon again. Just wanted to note that, (and i am sure it is known and intentional in order to fit) …only about half of the bird is showing, with the note.
I must also add that the note really makes sense in the image as one could easily associate the icon with music. I could see where it is essential to have either a note or a headphone.
On the downside, on my pc.. Windows Vista … 19inch Dell monitors, it more resembles a goldfish than a bird.
Man, I really liked the headset icon. This icon looks weird. It’s small, it doesn’t match the application at all, and looks plain silly.
I’m oving the constand upgrades done to this
Songbird/FireFox/Open Office have meade it really simple to move from a Vista enviroment to a Linux one
Im hoping to be able to do everything on my linux partition and leave the Vista only for the Adobe designing stuff
You might be happy to know that the first program I install on linux that wasnt part of the distro was Songbird
thank you guys
Hugo
Ps: Can we all just agree on the skinny bird being the logo? I’m not liking the fat guy or the eggshell. SKinny bird or headphones work
FYI: Songbird app icon discussion here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/songbirds_new_icon_not_so_good_wheres_the_bird
Nice release, good job Songbird team. Any idea how long until the official release???
Also, IDK what others are talking about I like the new icon. I hated the headphones and I think this is a step in the right direction.
One problem, and its more of a suggestion. Is there any way to integrate an Album Art Manager, something that will find and add missing album art?? That would be nice. Haven’t seen any add-ons for it either…
Wondering if anyone else has a missing libraries problem. I see three panes, but library does not work since I installed 1.0rc1 over 0.7 No matter how many times I uninstall it to get my old 0.7 back. It does not appear to be fixed with 1.0rc2 or 1.0rc3 either. Any suggestions?

@Fem: There have been lots of database changes during that versions… I think the only solution is to completly remove your database which is located in your /USer/Application Support/Songbird/profiles/ folder….
@Songbird-Team: Great work, the only thing really missing for a 1.0 launch in my opinion is that using Songbird as the default player makes no sence at least on OSX. Double clicking a mp3 file in the Finder doesnt start playing the file… File Icons are missing also… The other things i encountered are not that dramatic… It’s getting better and better… THX!
Found a bug in RC3: When i try to rapidly skip multiple songs (by pressing the skip button in songbird or on my keyboard) the whole thing freezes. I’ve tested it multiple times to see if it only happened randomly but so far it has happened 100% of the time. I’m running a clean install of Windows XP Pro, ~2000 songs in the library.
Also, I’m not a big fan of the icon either. I was looking forward to the egg hatching
. Major anti-climax, lol.
So far no crashes or other weired problems — everything is running smoothly! Regarding the icon: I didn’t like the headphone version at all, it’s fairly boring and generic. The new one is a huge improvement if only the really funny bird would have a different color. I think the current color doesn’t match the application itself. Maybe something with blue/grey would look better.
I get the following crash when I go to “Extras->Einstellungen” (in English “Tools->Options”):
parseError:[JavaScript Error: "undefined entity" {file: "chrome://mashtape/content/prefsOverlay.xul" line: 143 column: 7 source: " <label value="&mtprefs.tab.photo.speed;""}]
The crash only happens with German language setting. When I use English, everything is OK (no crash). My platform is Linux/x86. Hope this gets fixed until 1.0 final. Until then, I use the English language.
Tested it and works under Ubuntu Intrepid.
The only thing that keeps me away from songbird is the absence of global hotkeys… I need to move through my playlist while working!
Any news about that?
I’m having an issue where some of my songs aren’t displaying the right time in the time column or no time at all what do I do
Oh my god! What’s that for an ugly (and fishy) icon? Please change it. Everything before was better than THIS one!
As Peter, i have a crash with language (spanish). A crash dialog appears with “restart in english”.
Although this, good work!
Are there any plans to integrate more of the pane buttons:
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1304
So as to hide the left panel, during song play and not just web browsing
And to hide the play slider and volume area?
Thanks again for all that you guys do.
There is an active discussion about the NEW ICON over here, as posted by Rob Lord:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/songbirds_new_icon_not_so_good_wheres_the_bird
I’ve had this problem for some time though it has been improved/modified, but still not quite what it should be.
When you are playing a song from the library and you change the filters, i think it should continue playing the songs from the album/filtered list of where you originally selected the song.
Currently when you change the filter it will play the first song in the selected filter after finishing the selected song. this is annoying because you cant search for music without changing the filter, so even if you haven’t picked anything it changes the now playing to whatever filters are applied. I hope I’m clear enough.
The icon looks too goldfish-ish. See here: http://www.aqua-fish.net/imgs/articles/goldfish3.jpg
Not good at all!
The problem is It doesn’t show “Time” for WMA files:) It says 0:00 which is not right cuz it shows the proper time on Winamp and the another problem is there’s a problem with tagging. It doesn’t tag some songs so I have to tag them and some mp3 songs don’t play although they do in Winamp. I hope with the final release you will solve the WMA problem, tagging problem and compatibility problem thnx:)
Man Irc2 ws working fine
this version does nothing
wont download of SKerm
no SHoutcast
no playback of any kind
im on suse 11 if that helps
songbird ALWAYS takes a few seconds to play the first song after i start the program, that’s ridiculous, is the program started or isn’t it… should really be fixed before final, guys…
Would it be possible to get artists starting with “the” to go under their real letter…
Example: The Beatles should be under “B” not “T”.
@ Clamm
Thanks, I uninstalled Songbird and deleted any folder named such. And I got my libry pane to work
Maybe you guys should create a corrupt library verification check and have it do this automatically? Just a suggestion.
@Luke
Do you have the Now Playing add-on installed? If so please uninstall it and try again, this add-on has many issues and is really buggy at the moment (and is not maintained by Songbird).
@Enjabain
Sounds to me like someone hasn’t learned about playlists yet
@Beep
This was a known problem in RC3 and is already fixed for the next RC (or Final).
@sebastian
Well… we could make it start playing right away but then Songbird would take longer to start up. I think most people would rather have the application start up faster so that they can accomplish tasks other than playback rapidly. A second pause for first playback seemed OK to us for this release. However, I’m not saying that we won’t improve on this! I’m sure we’ll be able to make initialization of the mediacore even faster in a future release of Songbird.
@Fem
There is basic database corruption detection already used but it cannot cover all cases. The problem in your case was actually that the migration was _broken_ in RC1 and often failed.
I have been having some problems with the ‘Now Playing’ addon.
I uninstalled it and so far may holed off from it, but my problem now, is that, if i have the album art in the left lower column to be displayed by ‘now playing’ as opposed to by ’selected’… it flashes the album art but it then disappears and shows the drag album artwork here.
I am suspecting that it is the remnants of the now-playing addon in my profile that is causing this, because it was working fine before. Is there Anyway to remove the remnants of that in my profile without deleting my profile? Or is there another solution?
@deOmega
I’m afraid that’s a known issue that was resolved just a little too late to make it into RC3 but it will be fixed in the next RC (or Final).
@aus
No, I don’t have the Now Playing addon. The only add-on I have other than the defaults is LyricMaster. I tried disabling it to see if it was the problem but it still froze up.
I can’t even open Songbird without it crashing on me. It’s been happening for the past few releases, and it’s driving me insane. I’ve deleted the Programs File folder, the Local Data folder, and the Roaming Data Folder, but nothing it helping. I’m using Vista SP1 x86, and have also checked to see if Songbird runs in XP compatibility mode with admin privileges. Nothing works.
Can anyone help me?
I think the note on the icon should be blue and a bit more straight. Now it looks like it’s coughing blood or something.
@aus i would agree if the song was auto added to a play list. and this was working just fine in rc2. so somebody used to agree with me.
What’s up with the icon? It’s not terrible or anything, but it doesn’t match at all with the rest of the app. Why not just use the silver bird thingy? http://blog.songbirdnest.com/wp-content/themes/songbird/images/songbird-logo.png
Unfortunately I still get a crash right after starting Songbird. This happens since RC1. I have a clean profile, no addons (I didn’t get the chance to install any). Version 0.7 works fine.
This happens only one one computer I tried, on others Songbird works fine. What might be the difference between the computers? They all run XP SP3.
@ElBeh: I also think that should be the icon.
Hello!
I think Songbird is a wonderful project. But I have a few issues with it that is preventing me from switching from iTunes to Songbird. Or any other iTunes wanna be for that matter. iTunes handles podcasts in a way i Like very much. I tried to subscribe to a feed in Songbird and everything became a big mess. I want Songbird to handle the podcasts like iTunes does. At least when it comes to the interface. You subscrive to a feed, and there is your feed in the program. You klick on that feed and you see all the podcasts that belongs to that feed. in Songbird ot downloaded all the podcasts and placed them in a big mess according to meta data like Artist, name blabla. Just a mess. This is probaly the only thing that keeps me from trying Songbird for real.
And Also. If you subscribe to a feed. You HAVE to select an update interval which is stupid. you can’t put 0 in there, or click on any “Do not automatically update”.
And if you subscribe to a feed. It does not give the feed the correct feed-name.
Ok so I told it publicly,
http://www.vigilia.org/2008/11/songbird-je-adopte.html
Songbird is my songs’ player, the only one.
You guys, are great. Congratulations.
Please, please, keep it simple, don’t make like others, a player with thousand of tab,buttons and functionalities that nobody care about.
Extension are here for those who it different.
Thanks, thanks …
Hello,
after I updated to the RC i got the same problem as I had in the past.
4. November:
hello,
first thanks for the new release, but I have the same problem as I had at the pre-version.

Everytime, when I want to star a song i get a popup:

Mediacore Error
Can’t connect fakesrc with decoder (error=80040200)
———————————
I hope somebody can help me to solve the problem.
Best regards,
André

Songbird-1.1.0pre_857 worked very good, without ANY problems.
I hope you can fix the latest RC.
Best regards,
André
Sorry….Wrong alarm…
Please delete the over mentioned comment and this one!
Thank you in advance!
I have some mysterious crashes after starting songbird. I think its related with a double-click on a track to play it, but I’m not sure. It doesn’t happen very often, but if it happens, songbird freeze. I have to kill it with Task-Manager. This happens only on the first one or two songs of one session, if it’s running when i play the third track, it does not crash later.
I can’t figure out any pattern, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, that’s why I can’t file it on Bugzilla. One thing I know for sure: this didn’t happen with RC2.
@atreiu
I have to assume that you have ‘now playing list’ addon. I had requested that you skin your feather for it… well, I had to uninstall it, because i was getting the same problems you mentioned. I believe that the problem you are having is because of that addon in particular.
Moshy is addressing it:
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/96
@André
We’re glad your problem is solved
@Enjabain
Oops, I misread your comment and did not spot that you had the Now Playing add-on installed. This add-on is known to cause issues because it umm… well, let’s just say it doesn’t do things the way it should
We’re hoping to help the author make the necessary updates though.
I’m using sogbirg 0.7 and the improvements since 0.6 were great!
I would like to propose 2 thinks:
possibility to hide the player controls to make songbird look like a normal browser
and the ability to hide the mp3’s from a web page! it’s very anoying when you are just browsing the web that opens another thing on songbird that hide some part of the page!
I would like to sugest for example that on the loading bar at the top of the page (i don’t know how it calls in english) is the same where shows the downloads and the time left that appears a text saying: 1 or 2 or 3 mp3 found on this page, and then you click there and voila you can choose witch to download!
keep the good work people!
I love songbird, use it as much as I can.
But, to enter the logo/icon discussion: I’m finding the dramatic change in logo confusing! I’ve just upgraded from 0.7, and was hoping for either the old logo (sleek bird) or our gassy black friend.
Actually I was really expecting our gassy black friend was going to break out of the egg.
Was a bit disappointed to find a yellow song bird (slash-goldfish (I use windows xp)).
I can’t find the icon to open songbird anymore!
@aus,
So, i understand that the bug will be fixed for teh next release. Just wanted to pass on more information for whatever it may be worth, as opposed to waiting until AFTER.
Same thing happens to the lyrics window for the lyrics plugin.
The deal is, if I manually select a song, the lyrics and album art does not display,.. but if during the period they are not displaying, I hide and restore each pane, the information is then displayed. So.. this goes for album art as well as lyrics.
If i let the next song play automatically, the information shows without a problem. As indicated before..the problem occurs when i manually select a song.
I tried Songbird and compared to iTunes. It seems to me that playing the same (locally stored) songs with both tools, iTunes just seems better.
.mp3 with 320kbit/s
Any idea why?
Great!!!! Seems that the old media player was messing with my page file… now it runs PERFECTLY (well, at least this first 10 minutes)
I dont care the logo btw
Running on Windows XP SP2
How sad. I’ve updated to the new version and I can’t use Last.fm scrobbling anymore. I activate the scrobbling, I try to click on Connect to last.fm but nothing happens. I can’t scrobble
Ok I correct that one. Actually I’ve had to update my addons in order to make Last.fm work again. That’s weird. Songbird should have asked me to update my addons during the installation process.
Anyway.
The new search in my library is faster than ever with this new release. Keep up the good work and CONGRAT on the new icon.
As someone mentioned above, i had a problem with installation and language, and every time i installed anything it told me to restart in english, but i believe it’s due to the portuguese version not being updated until then.
For some tracks SB won’t display the album art correctly, and again it didn’t import any of the metadata for nearly 20 songs. But i have to look more into it before reporting a bug.
But apart from that everything else seems fine so far.
@Olivia
If you could file a bug and attach some of the tracks that don’t have metadata imported for them we’d be really grateful
It’ll also help us fix your problem
My walnut theme is compatible with 1.0RC3 and current nightlies. The reported issue with missing titlebar on the Mac has been fixed with version 0.3 as posted on: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1350.
Walnut is a full theme, with a redesign of almost all UI elements.
Great! Upgraded and things are working great so far
I miss the old gassy black and white songbird logo and really don’t care for this new colorful one. I hope that the final release uses some image with the original poot’n songbird or the favicon from the site. My personal favorite is the Songbird with the headphones on….that is what I use on my Ubuntu machine as the logo
@Simon
If you liked the oldskool black style, this feather is particularly niiiiiiiice: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1295
It just doesn’t work by me, I installed it over version 0.7 (that worked perfect) but now i can’t play any music.. i don’t understand it but i think it is a bug…
(I’m using vista home premium 32x)
Nice this RC3! Still some problems mostly with extensions, but very interesting!
When will the final be released?
Are there any plans to insert some key feature like:
* the library self-refreshing with new songs on the watched folders;
* something like the “Now Playing” list add-on, but integrated and bug-free
* the possibility to search and download for cd-covers?
Anyway, hope that with the release of the final 1.0.0 the developement of extensions will have a boom… so everyone will really fit the player for himself!
Bye, and thanks for the good work!!!
I really like Songbird, it really has potential
I am using rc3 and i am still experiencing higher than expected cpu usage. i have a laptop with 1gb ram and 1.70ghz pentium m processor. songbird uses 23% of am cpu when playing songs and jumps to 100% cpu when switching songs.
my library is on an external 500gb usb dive, 9460 songs, 195gb in size and in a FLAC format
The icon absolutely doesn’t work for me. The black bird (mascot) would make a great icon.
The reasoning about HIG talking about photo-realistic icons is misleading. All those HIGs address icons that are displayed in the application, not the actual application icon. The application icon should look great, familar and should transport the brand-identity.
The only two things I associate with the “Songbird” brand are the black bird and maybe the eggshell.
And lets not forget that the orange bird is nowhere reassembled in the mostly B/W GUI. I guess it wouldn’t fit there anyway, as it is too colorful.
I don’t know why, but the RC3 icon (especially the “small” version which is badly cropped) makes me far more… uhm… uncomfortable than all application functionality glitches combined.
@grAz
Yes, yes and yes. All are features that are planned

>> Oh it wasn’t a real bug. I was the bug actually, duh. I had the metadata written in the wrong fields, which were different than fields i choose to display.
but thanx anyway!
@Olivia
Hehe
No problem, glad you have it figured out
Only problem I am having is if I filter my library, switch to MediaFlow then switch to something else(say ShoutCast) and go back to the library… I lose my filtering.
Sorry if my question is stupid.
I’ve searched but without find if Songbird is compatible with OSS (open sound system) on Linux. I’m using Ubuntu intrepid on a 64 bit arch.
I’ve tested the 0.7.0 i386 Linux version and due a hardware problem, its mandatory to me to use OSS instead ALSA, and when Songbird starts i receive a media core error. When a ask for more details nothing happens.
Note that sound works with others apps, and Gnome Sound Prefs is set to use OSS.
Someone has the same? I’m downloading the 1.0 RC3 to test now.
WOW, GREAT!
Songbird 1.0RC3 works fine with Ubuntu Intrepid 64 bits with OSS instead ALSA.
I tried out songbird months ago when I was running linux on my PC. I thought I would try it out again, this time on XP. I have to say I have yet to find a problem with it, and I love the features. The only thing I can’t figure out how to do is to have it automatically organize my music library into folders when I play songs like iTunes does. Is there maybe an add-on to do this or something that I have missed?
Uh oh… Now I’m getting the random mediacore errors… even with songs that are in MP3 unencrypted format.
Ok I found a problem with rc3 at last, if I add a folder with music to my library, scan and add to songbird but then change the folder name, say add artist name or change a spelling it wont play the music anymore.
So I rescan my library and it adds the working files but duplicates the album. The previous list will still not work and I cant see a function for removing dead tracks automatically!?
Other than that, I think its pretty much done, loving it!
When I click on a song in windows, songbird opens (as i’ve set it to be the default app for mp3s) but the song does not play, nor is it focused on in the library. This happens both if the mp3 is in the library (previously imported) or not.
@Tobotron
This add-on may be of interest to you then: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/216
Premium…thanks Aus!
When RC1 was released, everything seemed to be going well. The only issue is that it would have an error when it tried to play mp4’s, and the color scheme message would come up.
With RC2, when I load songbird, I get the color scheme message.
Same with RC3.
Also, the “bug” with songbird maximized and the taskbar not coming up has not been fixed still. I commented on that over the summer.
