Recommended Add-ons

By rtomayko rtomayko Permalink

The Songbird add-on developer community has been on a tear! We’ve been seeing a ton of great add-ons being published lately. In order to help new Songbird users dive in with a good starter set of add-ons, we’ve taken a page from our friends at Mozilla and have published a list of recommended Songbird starter add-ons, hand-picked by the Songbird team.

This list is dynamic, and you can expect it to change over time as we identify those add-ons with broad community appeal. Your participation on the add-ons site is important in establishing which add-ons are most vital for new users, so be sure to use the rating tool and leave a comment on your favorite add-ons. We use a variety of statistics to help guide the selection but the key metric is community activity.

Tip: Check out the list in Songbird to get recommendations tailor fit for your platform and player version.

Really good stuff for those who want to get started with Songbird right away! Now let’s do the same thing for feathers! Just joking, that would be impossible since everyone got their own taste. But still…..
If there was a small window that popped up after choosing to install that included a chance for the user to rate the add-on, I think there would be a significant increase in average rating count per add-on. On the downside, this might be a cause of irritation from a user point of view. Perhaps there could be a option for the add-on creator to enable a feature like this?
Any way, those were all good recommendations !

We were hoping to get a few feathers into the recommended list right off the bat but the Fugazi release introduces some changes that cause issues with existing feathers. We should see some new and updated feathers soon and we’ll make sure to get them onto the list as soon as we do.

Being able to rate add-ons from within the bird is a really interesting idea. We’re exploring a variety of concepts that would further integrate the add-ons site with the bird (e.g., making add-on release notes available from the add-ons preference screen in the bird). We’ll see what we can come up with.

I discovered songbird today and it has me really geeked. Awesome program. I started telling people about it at the web company I work for. Initial raction seems to be, “looks great, but not until it supports podcasts I can sync to my ipod”.

Couple more features I’d personally like to see is CD ripping, skip during shuffle, and “open containing folder” when right clicking on the song. Otherwise I’m ready to ditch itunes on both my mac and PC and so glad to see a linux version as well for those of us desperately waiting to ditch windows in favor of Ubuntu whenever adobe decides to release CS3/4 for linux. :)
Also would love to ditch firefox in favor of songbird, but it definitely needs more firefox ability built in.
    Great job.

I am enjoying this program as well but with this beta I am finding that most of the extensions I try are blocked as they state they are not compatible with 0.7. Any ideas or option to turn off compatibility check?

I like the add on feature but relly got stumped ,I am wondering is there an ongoing work or something for addon support for subscriptions, my ITunes broke and I discovered this cool piece of software and I am totally loving it, please convert lyricsplugin addon to support 0.7 because as an OSS fan I always want to try newest piece even if it’s a junk, performance wise It is 100 times better then itunes , little less in sound quaity(it doesn’t matter much for me ) and is better in looks(even if a visual clone in my views) ,

    Thanx and regards Vaibhav MIshra

The thing I love about Music Jukebox was its awesome file, library, and song tagging editors. Music Match Juke Box (MMJB) had the ability to change the names of multiple FILES. Yahoo took over and took that function out. They might have added it back in cause its been a year since I used it. I hated how Yahoo’s program automatically change file and tack names with OUT my permission. Yahoo named songs wrongly I might add on TONS of songs before I was able to turn that function off.

    EXAMPLE:

I can select 10 tracks. I can then take the titles of those tracks and make them the names of the files, OR take the names of those files and make them the titles of the tracks. That would be nice for another more updated program to do that. Winamp doesn’t even give one the function to change the names of song files. Nor will it really let me change multiple tags on songs in a decently organized way.

When I need to change tags on a group of songs from a album nothing did it like music match jukebox. I loved how it could change file names to how I wanted them to be renamed, not just with new CD’s I was ripping. MusicMatch could add all kinds of info from the tags and put that info into the file names, or it could take all that useless info out. So basicly what I am suggesting is a really awesome song file managing software.

I’m a guitarist and one of the things I love about Songbird is how fast you can view lyrics… Is there anyway you could make similar add-on with guitar tabs or music chords in general? I know the reason the lyrics work so well is because of other services, but I think it could still work, right?

I am really liking Songbird, but I’d like to listen to a local radio station which requires a windows media plug-in, as I’m running Ubuntu there’s no variant for that, is there a possibility of one in the pipeline?

Still the best I’ve used, keep up the good work guys.
