A little UI incongruity: The playlist submenu is more indented in comparison to the bookmarks submenu.

When I tried to install it I got the following error message:

    ——————————————————————————————————–
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus.

You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy.

It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch
    (NOT RECOMMENDED).
    —————————————————————————————————————-

The title of the error message was NSIS Error, I’m using Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2. I tried downloading the file 3 times, so I know it is not a download problem.

Sorry, I’m the one who broke that. It’s already fixed in trunk though.

  5. Astar Aug 14, 2008 10:17 pm Permalink

Are you going to fix that insane ui behavior, when songbird totally ignore standard window management?
    1. I can”t get window’s menu. For ex. to move window to another desktop. (win/lin)
    2. I can’t move/resize window with alt+mouse (lin)
    3. I can’t move window between virtual desktops (compiz for example)
    4. If I make it maximized, I can’t restore it back. resize doesn’t work, “restore” button doesn’t work (lin)
5 If it’s maximized and has focus on, it overlays other on-top elements (my autohide panel, my launcher) - lin

    Very. VERY uncomfortable.

    @Astar

Hey there. You’re right, there’s still quite a few integration issues on Linux. It’s pretty hard to get great integration with this feather and Rubberducky because we don’t use the Operating System or Window Manager Chrome. What I mean by ‘Chrome’ is the standard window decorations you see for all your applications on any OS. Some applications, like Songbird, have the ability to discard and not use those elements. However, we have to handle all those elements ourselves and we’re not quite up to par yet.

Now, with that being said, it’s possible to have Songbird use the OS or Window Manager Chrome. You can do it with a new Feather :)

We’re hoping to see the community make awesome native looking Feathers for all OS/WMs imaginable :)

    @Dan

That’s very strange. It seems the installer that was uploaded may be corrupted. :( Stay tuned. We’ll let you know what’s the scoop.

  8. Astar Aug 14, 2008 11:32 pm Permalink

    @Aus

    Thanks for an answer.
But I’d like to highlight some things.

I don’t think that feather switching is so important and frequently used to be binded on right click. it’s pretty enough to have it in menu. Just bypass if it possible to system.

And about maximizing. This is not just missing feature. This is bug. If songbird can’t solve maximizerestore mechanism just disable maximizing (or replace with resize-to-whole-screen), cause if songbird was maximized once - you can’t get back anymore. Except profile erasing.

Nice looking build so far… The first thing I noticed though is that the album artwork column in the library view is missing. It used to show a tiny thumbnail of the album art next to each track. When I try and add this column back into my library view the option doesn’t seem to be there. It was called something like “Primary Artwork Location” or similar.

Great to see the release candidates coming thick and fast though :)

    Another bug for me :
When I stopped a music, the data is still on the faceplate and the play button is on “paused” state.

  13. Coldwater Aug 15, 2008 3:42 am Permalink

One thing - I can’t seem to be able to delete songs from a playlist without removing them from the library. This is slightly vexing.

Test Addon: iPod Device Support 3.0.9.705
    Test Device: iPod Classic 80GB

The device mounted, passes a quicklook, and unmounts for all OSs.

If you are still having a problem, can you please enter a bug for us to track/work on your specific issue at:

    @ Geekshadow

Songbird QA cannot reproduce your problem on any OS platform with RC3 release. When we hit pause control button, or select Play/Pause Controls menu, works as expected. Play button displays in pause mode.

How are you stopping the music? Could you please write a new bug for us to work with directly in a bug record?

    Thanks!

  20. georges Aug 15, 2008 10:51 am Permalink

    @slate8
We had to hide the column because of a database conflict between Album Art background process and our Full Text Search. http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11618
We’re hoping to bring it back at some point. For now, you can either view the Album Art in the lower left display pane, when you edit metadata for a track or by installing the MediaFlow addon http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/238

I believe you are on Linux. Just retested your remove from playlist issue and found that first selection of contextual menu on a track in general (in Library or Playlist) has Play, Remove, Edit Metadata and Add to Playlist greyed out. They are there on 2nd/consequential selections. Occurs on y on Linux builds.

Good bug! Entered in Bugzilla. Thanks!

Sorry for spam ;-) The not being able to remove from a playlist without removing from library is with a Smart Playlist, correct?

I’m getting a system-crashing bug on Ubuntu Gusty, with all the latest updates. No crazy programs running, just the basic OS and songbird. The MP3 playback will lock up the system at random intervals.

    Anyone else getting this?

  24. Jan Leger Aug 15, 2008 1:41 pm Permalink

Ubuntu Gusty is Ubuntu 7.10. No, we are not seeing this in Songbird QA. We are primarily running on 32 bit 7.10.

Thanks for the info - would be great to see it re-appear at some point. Media flow doesn’t work on Linux so it was useful to have the artwork column in the library view.

Loving the new artwork pane though - this release candidate is phenomenal!

  26. Slate8 Aug 15, 2008 2:37 pm Permalink

@georges - sorry should have read the bug report first… Searching is way, way more important than showing album artwork so happy that the artwork column has been sacrificed for a good cause; search performance! :)

I am using OS X 10.5.4 and Flac playback is twice as slow and an octave lower…

But its better…in the sense that some flac files it used to stop halfway now plays okay - an octave lower that is.

In RC2 I had problems with the language files, but RC3 installed like a charm both in Linux (latest ubuntu) and windows XP! :-)

Loving iTunes, I was a bit hesitant about the new interface, but now I’m starting to love it already!

    Great job guys!

  30. Coldwater Aug 16, 2008 10:15 am Permalink

Jan Leger: Actually, I’m on Windows, but glad to be of help anyway. :P

I’ve checked again, and yes, I can remove from a normal (not smart) playlist without problems - however, a notification pops up, wanting me to confirm that I want to remove the file from the library. Which is what had me confused.

  31. bishyb Aug 16, 2008 11:16 am Permalink

Would love to see folder.jpg support for Album Art, as well as fast forward/rewind Hotkey settings (i.e. Fast Forward 10 Seconds / 1 Minute etc.)

RC3 running great besides that though :)

  32. Garret Aug 16, 2008 1:19 pm Permalink

Sorry Jan, I actually meant Ubuntu Hardy. I can’t figure it out.

  33. Garret Aug 16, 2008 2:37 pm Permalink

I removed the install, and deleted the profle data, and started fresh. Had the exact same crash after about 20 minutes of use. The crash occurs during regular use, right during the middle of song playback (no input whatsoever)

Is there some sort of diagnostic I can provide for you guys? I’m new to linux, but I love this program, and would hate to see this bug reach the final build.

  34. andryou Aug 16, 2008 8:17 pm Permalink

I’m also getting the same problem as Garret (Songbird would freeze up; e.g. window is greyed out and unresponsive), except it’s not after 20 minutes of use, it’s around 5-10.

I’m using Hardy, 4377 items in my Library, on a Dell Latitude D630 laptop.

Songbird is definitely impressive. IMHO, it’s on par with iTunes, if not surpassing it in many aspects. This bug is dampening the experience.

Seems to be working fine now that I’ve disconnect my iPod from my laptop (fingers crossed); I have a feeling it’s due to the iPod synchronization process / add-on. It seems to get stuck on the “Mounting iPod” process. Now that there is no iPod connect, it hasn’t freezed (yet?).

I also noticed that when I went to sync my iPod, it would create a duplicate of the playlists on the iPod. Each time I clicked on “Sync”, it would create another duplicate, and now I have 3 copies of my “Addictive” playlist.

Anyways, great work! I love the new interface.

  35. andryou Aug 16, 2008 8:33 pm Permalink

Oh, and also, my iPod is an iPod Video, 5G with 30gb.

Its been around 20 minutes without my iPod connected, and Songbird is still up and running just fine (so I suspect it has something to do with the iPod).

  36. andryou Aug 16, 2008 10:36 pm Permalink

Just dropping by to say that Songbird has yet to freeze up. There’s definitely a problem when my iPod’s plugged in; when it isn’t, everything’s just dandy.

  37. Garret Aug 17, 2008 12:19 am Permalink

Hmmm….my ipod is not plugged in. However, I do have the iPod support plugin installed…

  38. Tabo Aug 17, 2008 6:42 am Permalink

I have a huge memory leak happening with rc3, i had the exact same problem on 0.6.1
    Im running on Xp+sp3.
It usually happen when i skip 2 or 3 song in row. I’m on shuffle in my whole library (3600tunes). When that happen, songbird stop to play and the process goes between 50-75% cpu and the memory used inccress at the rate of about 20-30meg/sec
I love your player beside that, but barely usable because of the problem i listed above ;o/

  39. Forest Aug 17, 2008 11:44 am Permalink

    @andryou

If the window is greying up, it sounds to me like you’re using compiz-fusion, which could be the source of it freezing/crashing. In Firefox, compiz does not seem to mesh well with flash player and firefox has the same basic backend as songbird so maybe your problem could be related?? Just a thought…

  40. techie Aug 17, 2008 2:28 pm Permalink

    MTP problem

I have gotten MTP device support problem since rc1. I am using Sansa Clip. 0.6.1 would work great on retrieving the play lists, but 0.7.0 rc2 will just retrieve the library and 0.7.0 rc3 will just freeze. I have to downgrade to 0.6.1 for the Clip usage.

  41. Garret Aug 17, 2008 2:33 pm Permalink

I did a little bit of testing, and I THINK that the issue with the lockup was in fact compiz. After turning the effects down to normal, I haven’t had any issues. Crossing my fingers that was the issue…

  42. Nazgoth Aug 17, 2008 3:14 pm Permalink

Playback stutters between tracks (flac). At the end of a song a fraction of a second of the next song is played then silence and then the next song is played. (core2duo, vista x64)

This is probably the wrong place to post this but personnaly i would like to see an interface like MediaMonkey where there is a list of album arts instead of a text only list.

  43. Garret Aug 17, 2008 5:00 pm Permalink

The issue was not compiz. The player locks up regardless of the effect level. After going through the sessions manager, everything has been disabled that did not come with the system, and I’m still having lockups. The latest was nearly an hour into playback.

    ideas?

  44. msmith Aug 18, 2008 10:07 am Permalink

Pacino: that sounds really weird! Can you tell us more about your setup, so that we can reproduce and fix it?
    - Does it happen with all flac files, or only some?
    - What hardware do you have?
    - Is there anything else unusual about your system?
    - Are your flac files ‘normal’ 44.1kHz stereo, or something else?

  45. techie Aug 18, 2008 12:49 pm Permalink

MTP support still does not work. I am using songbird on Windows. So it should not be the problem of compiz. I uninstalled 0.7 rc3 and reinstalled 0.6.1. All work great. There should be some problem with Songbird or the MTP device support addon.

    HI,

I find when i open up the player.. and the volume is set to midway, sounds nice and loud…but the darnedest thing…if i try to increase the volume with the Songbird volume bar, the volume drops… and taking the lever to maximum never returns the volume to as high as it was before.

  47. Nelson Aug 18, 2008 5:55 pm Permalink

I’m having a lot of trouble with iTunes library importing (I believe I had this problem in RC 2 as well), it keeps on failing part way through the importing process. If I get the time to figure out the problem in more detail I’ll file a bug report… I’m on OS X 10.5.4 on a Macbook Pro.

  48. andryou Aug 18, 2008 7:02 pm Permalink

Seems like my previous problem solved itself. Now the only bug left is everytime I click on Sync, it doesn’t remove or update existing playlists on my iPod; it adds a new playlist, causing there to be duplication.

Today I tried to ‘fix’ the behaviour of tabs, with web and media tabs being separated. It was a matter of removing just 1 line from the xul file. I wondered; if it is so easy to swap between the two behaviours,,, why don’t you simply add an option to options menu to switch between them? I don’t like that the tabs don’t do what I ask them to, while others might like it so much, they want the behaviour with every feather…

  50. atreiu Aug 19, 2008 2:05 am Permalink

@Pino: Can you tell me details about that line? Perhaps I could make an Add-on to do this…

  51. Pino Aug 19, 2008 5:05 am Permalink

@atreiu: This is the layout file used for Gonzo http://src.songbirdnest.com/source/xref/feathers/gonzo/chrome/content/xul/mainplayer.xul. When you look at line 183 you see “hasmediatab=”true”". When removing this line (or probably changing to false), it will change behaviour to the way it was up to 0.6. I have no idea how hard it is to make an addon for that, but it would be really cool if you did :-).

  52. atreiu Aug 19, 2008 5:16 am Permalink

@Pino: I don’t no how difficult this will be, too :-D It looks easy to change this attribute, but i don’t no what other effects there could be. I give it a try!

  53. atreiu Aug 19, 2008 6:40 am Permalink

    @Pino:
I’ve done a fast version, which removes the line (changing to “false” didn’t help” at the start-up:

Please test it, there might be problems with this solution.

  54. Pino Aug 19, 2008 9:37 am Permalink

@atreiu: Great! You have done that incredibly fast. I am testing it now and will give some comments on the addons page

When I import a mp3 file that has not the “.mp3″ letters at the end, songbird recognices it as a binnary file and it doesn’t play the file. If I go to the properties of the file it says it is a mp3 one.

    I’m using Ubuntu.

  56. pvh Aug 20, 2008 10:18 am Permalink

@Orma: We use file extension to determine type. This is a known limitation, but has a simple work-around: just rename the file to end with .mp3.

I have posted about the maximize and restore buttons conflict… it is unstable. Sometimes it indicates it is in maximize state when it is not and vice versa.

I also posted about the glitch with the volume.

These are still issues, BUT I will avoid posting for now since, from the lack of responses, these are probably trivial stuff… as it is further indicating that you guys have bigger issues to deal with, which is understandable.

Looking forward to the official .7, as I have downgraded until then.

0.7 looks great! I love the new, clean interface and so far I’ve only had a couple small hiccups. One thing, however: Flash Player doesn’t seem to work after I upgraded from 0.6.1 even though I extracted and copied the files to the same directory (/opt/Songbird/). Java still works fine and I used the same method for copying the Flash plugin as Java. In fact, after upgrading to 0.7, I didn’t have to do anything and Java worked fine “out of the box.” I’m using Ubuntu Hardy (8.04).
