Songbird 0.7 Release Candidate 2 is Available for Testing

By raffel raffel Permalink
Songbird 0.7 RC2 is now available for download!

Free Climb
Here are the most noteworthy features we’d like to call out in RC2 and get your feedback on:

  • Smart Playlists: Create playlists that automatically update based on criteria you set.
  • Album Art: Read, write and display album artwork. There’s a new Album Art Display Pane in the bottom of the Service Pane that shows the artwork associated with currently playing track. In the Metadata Editor, you can add, remove, cut, copy and paste artwork to a track – changes will be saved to the file(s) you edit.

The RC1 blog post has a list of additional features we’ve been working on for this release.

As always, please file any issues, bugs, or crashes you find in Bugzilla so that we can address them before 0.7 final!

Both comments and trackbacks are currently closed.

I literally just got around to installing RC1 on my Ubuntu box earlier tonight, I guess it’s time to update again. :)

  3. frozen Aug 11, 2008 9:34 pm Permalink

    Hello,
I’m testing 0.7RC2 and It seems that there is no way of selecting “limit to”, “selected by random” and “autoupdate” at the same time when you create smartplaylists. Is this by design?

When i reported this for 0.7RC1 i was redirected to bug 11093 which seems to be “fixed”.

  4. sili Aug 11, 2008 11:32 pm Permalink

I hope I will be able to play songs with Win2000 again :)

    Testing it with XP now…

What I really miss is the possibility to drag (copy and move) a song from the library to the filebrowser (e.g. to a mobile mediaplayer). This still doesn’t work :(

  5. raffel Aug 11, 2008 11:52 pm Permalink

    @frozen
yes, this is by design. if we auto-updated the random list users would never actually make it through playing the limit they selected (in other words, you might as well limit the selection to 1 – which isn’t what we think users want). you’ll note in the bottom of the playlist we provide an option to ‘update’ manually.

  6. raffel Aug 11, 2008 11:54 pm Permalink

    @sili
Indeed, we want to support that drag&drop use case too – it’s definitely on our list of future work ToDo. I’ll note your vote for it.

  7. Hoshi Aug 11, 2008 11:55 pm Permalink

Still a bit slow in my opinion but maybe that’s my laptop’s memory. Any news on performance optimisation. Apart from this, fantastic work as always.

  8. Spocky Aug 12, 2008 12:07 am Permalink

One vote for drag and drop from my side too…

And let me be your guilty conscience – don’t forget the sync ability on Linux :) one vote for this too from here

    beside this perfect work
    Cheers
    Martin

  9. rdvon Aug 12, 2008 12:15 am Permalink

Glad to see how frequently your releasing, one step closer to 1.0!

  10. Spocky Aug 12, 2008 12:16 am Permalink

Aaaaah I forgot some more feature requests:

    What about
    - a Smart Playlist “Most played Genre”

    - the possibility to find similar music (according to BPM as a very basic, maybe like last.fm

    - did I mention the sync ability on Linux already ?

    - dedicate a dialog to show statistics: about the library: GBs, Nr. of files, also include some weird statistics like distribution of files according to Genre

    - Ability to automatically complete missing fields in the ID3 Tags

    ok enough for now.
guys, thank you for the music

    Martin

I just updated through Help > Check for Updates, clicked Restart Songbird and got this:

    http://img374.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sble0.png
    http://img524.imageshack.us/my.php?image=begd7.png

Not the first time it has happened. Any ideas why this happens? Clicking Reload in English helped for the first time this time.

Also, with regards to frozen’s Smart Playlist problem… If I create a Smart Playlist: “Last played is not in the last 7 days” limit it to 10 items and choose Auto update, Songbird should play through the 10 songs, stop, and update the playlist with another 10 songs based on its criteria. If I stop after five songs it should remove the played songs from the list and add another 5.

Why should I have to manually update a playlist like this? What’s the point of being able to select songs by random if you get the same ones each time you play the list? Am I missing something? Is there a way to get the above behaviour another way?

  12. seba Aug 12, 2008 12:53 am Permalink

pffff, I really hate gonzo, and if I go to feathers, there is no rubberducky …. ??

  13. gorz Aug 12, 2008 3:25 am Permalink

Is there a reason why you removed the “web media history”?
Or is it just disabled by default or in development?

  14. moise Aug 12, 2008 4:28 am Permalink

Well, I’m using Songbird for a while and I’m loving it. I would suggest the same as someone above, what about a “similar artists” feature? I would be fantastic, great way to discovery new music, what is one of the goals for Songbird, isn’t?

And what about a coverart automatic download? It would be nice, too.

Very good work, guys! Keep going! :D

  15. Ssebu Aug 12, 2008 4:50 am Permalink

Just a question: is Gonzo still being worked on ? Because personally I like the new layout, but I find the color scheme and the icons a bit bland. It’s like watching a really cool movie on a black and white TV ! Plus, it’s too similar to iTunes.

  16. Pegasuz Aug 12, 2008 5:03 am Permalink

Everything works quite fine, only the search is só slow… Really annoying…

  17. nate Aug 12, 2008 5:08 am Permalink

looks good! love the support for album art!

does this mean album art is synched to a portable device? i tried songbird with it using RC1, and when synching music no album art appeared wiht my music on my player (zen x-fi).

with the support of album art in the program, does it now synch that with the player?

if this has always been supported, what could i be doing wrong to not get the albumart on the player.

    thanks!

  18. jahk Aug 12, 2008 5:17 am Permalink

Great job. As I know you guys are working on stuff.. my only question/suggestion would be the ability to display ’selected’ album art in the service pane, as opposed to just ‘now playing’.

  19. GeekShadow Aug 12, 2008 5:47 am Permalink

    @seba
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1277 old style still rock !

This rc2 work like a charm ! I just update it on Ubuntu and no problem, Album Art Pane work good !

Is it possible to have an option to activate filters panes on smart playlists ?
    I’d like this feature ;)

Do you have a ballpark date of when 0.7 final will be released? When will iPod support be integrated?

  21. sebastian Aug 12, 2008 8:11 am Permalink

yeah just wanna chime in and say I’d reather see this move away from looking like iTunes. originality beats lazyness (for switchers that is).

    btw, who uses Win2000??

  22. Orca Aug 12, 2008 9:08 am Permalink

I’d just like to suggest sticking with a more rubberducky look, because if it had looked like the new default (kinda iTunes ish), I probably wouldn’t have even tried it before uninstalling. Glad I did try it, cuz this is my new favorite… thing, so yeah.

  23. komi Aug 12, 2008 9:35 am Permalink

    @seba, Ssebu

Currently we are constraining ourselves to fixing bugs and adding final touches to Gonzo in preparation for the final release of 0.7. We’ve received a lot of feedback about Gonzo from the community so far and hope of address some of them in upcoming releases.

Remember that you’ll be able to create feathers just like before. I’m sure we’ll see a feather based on Gonzo with Rubberducky’s visual design shortly after the release goes live ;-)

  24. Cron Aug 12, 2008 10:04 am Permalink

I’m holding on to the final 0.7 release before trying it out. But yeah, i feel the same as others above about Gonzo: you need to make it look less like iTunes.

    Otherwise, it looks awesome.

  25. atreiu Aug 12, 2008 11:04 am Permalink

Can someone please make skin, looking exactly like the actual gonzo-feathers, BUT with the colors from the Gonzo-sketch?
    Seen here: http://blog.songbirdnest.com/2008/07/04/gonzo-is-in-the-house/
You dont have to create any button or graphic, you just have to change the color of everything to Pink, Green and Blue.

I really like these crazy parrot-colors, they are much better than the itunes-grey :-D Anybody else like this idea?

  26. ali rayl Aug 12, 2008 11:08 am Permalink

@Richard: It looks like you uncovered a broken language pack. Those get uploaded from time to time. Which locale are you using? If you’re not sure, look under File -> Language.

These release works very well for me i havn’t got any problem for now but i like the old defaullt layout(0.6.1); a black feather theme where i can found it; i didn’t find it in the feather page

  28. sili Aug 12, 2008 11:34 am Permalink

sebastian: I’m still using Win2000 but in some weeks I’ll switch to Mac OS X (waiting for a new macbook).

Hooray, I’m able to play songs in Songbird again :)

  29. stevel Aug 12, 2008 11:36 am Permalink

@gorz: I made a quick add-on to re-enable the Web Media History node. You can download it from our add-ons site, here.

  30. Clamm Aug 12, 2008 2:02 pm Permalink

Puh… i really was scared as soon as i couldnt find rubberducky… Thank God there are already feathers for that… I just can’t live without it ;-)

  31. Clamm Aug 12, 2008 2:09 pm Permalink

Hmm… Where can i search for album covers like in the add-on version. Or isnt this a 1one to one integration? Gonzo really isnt my favor but as long as theres a feather for rubberducky i am happy ;-) Thanks to the creator!

  33. jahk Aug 12, 2008 4:10 pm Permalink

When i try editing meta data… I have this issue where the confirmation window stays up until i either hit cancel or close.. though it effectively completes the data edit.

Also, as of this time, as far as I am seeing, I cannot automatically add any album art to songs without art. Seems like my only options now are to paste or point to a file. I suppose i have to wait for the full release or when album art becomes compatible with this version.

  34. Forest Aug 12, 2008 5:30 pm Permalink

I actually really like Gonzo’s greyish look. I don’t think it’s iTunes-ish at all, and it’s a lot lighter and more minimalist than rubberducky’s goth, all-black feathers.

  35. fanfan Aug 12, 2008 7:19 pm Permalink

Looking great as usual these days!

Here’s one issue I haven’t seen before though: Songbird is doing something that changes the modification dates of the source folders of MP3 files (using Ubuntu 8.04).

Not a huge deal for me but other music players I’ve used haven’t done this. Sometimes I use my file browser (Nautilus) and sort folders by date to remind me of recent additions to my collection, but now all my folders seem to be dated at the time Songbird scanned them. FWIW, it didn’t touch any of the actual files.

  36. frozen Aug 12, 2008 7:53 pm Permalink

    @raffel
I took a look this morning into the “selected by random” issue and i noticed that there was no “update manually” button for me… turns out that for some reason the “Now Playing List” Addon makes that button dissapear…. I’m posting this just in case someone stumbles with the same problem……

I LOVE THE NEW GUI !!! Wayyy better than the old one and not as much of an *tunes appearance. Love it love it love it! Keep up the good work!!

  38. seba Aug 13, 2008 2:50 am Permalink

    Well,

I need to say, the first time I runned 0.7 after using 0.3 to 0.6 I found the new skin plain ugly. But after 2 days I love it. It works like so much more intuitive right now, the only negative point are the iTunes colors (not bad, but well, too much like you want to fake iTunes).

Anyway, this is the first release I really use. The others were more testing things out, and than I went back to iTunes. This release is the first time songbird has become my default music player.

    GREAT WORK!

Great looking player, but still unable to handle large collections – tested it with 30-40k tracks and it uses up all RAM and freezes – it still seems as if no players can handle the size of collections that a networked culture generates.

  46. Michael Ono Aug 13, 2008 8:36 pm Permalink

The new theme rocks! I really appreciate the work you’ve done so far. A few things about the ipod plugin.

    - The rating stars still don’t transfer over to the ipod. Highest rated playlist transfers and works but the actual ratings don’t show up.

    - Smart playlists don’t show up on the songbird interface under the ipod section. I had to look at my ipod to see that the smart playlists were working properly.

  47. peter Aug 14, 2008 2:52 am Permalink

Is anyone else getting a massive memory usage? As in 160MB massive? It completely overloaded my computer and I had to switch back to 0.6.1.

  48. seba Aug 14, 2008 4:20 am Permalink

Same here, if I just start songbird and play some songs, the memory is about 200 mb, If I use it more intensively, like visiting some webpages and downloading some songs etc, the memory went over 1 gb, and it slowed down my entire system and it constantly freezes.

too bad, because 0.7 looked really good.

  49. andreww Aug 14, 2008 8:08 am Permalink

Great build you guys, personally I love Gonzo; Rubberducky was too harsh in my opinion.

I’m not really able to use my backspace as a back button in the browser. This might be because I remapped my backspace but it works on everything else. It just kind of sucks though because I use that all the time.

Also, search is still super slow and draggy, I’m sure you know that already though.

  50. Derek Aug 14, 2008 9:11 am Permalink

Songbird is really coming along. One problem that ultimately affects my usage is the lack of quick audio control I have over the player.

When pause is clicked there is anywhere from a 1 second to 2 second delay before the audio actually pauses. This is true for most operations in songbird.

Quite a problem when co-workers are trying to talk to you and there is no quick way to pause the audio.

  51. Rafael Aug 14, 2008 11:27 pm Permalink

Songbird 0.7 RC 1 and RC 2 doesn’t play flac files if they have a diacritic or a percentage symbol on the name.
In portuguese diacritics are commonly used so many songs by brazilian artists won’t play.
They do play if the file is a MP3.

  52. Boris Aug 15, 2008 9:56 am Permalink

    @Rafael
I’ve tested .flac files with diacritics and percentage symbols and without them on windows and Mac with 0.7.0rc3 builds.
They do play either with or without those symbols..
I see choppy playback on my Windows machine and we have an open bug for this issue:
    http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8858
Your problem could be related to GStreamer configuration.
GStreamer handles flac playback, while .mp3’s are handled either by VLC or Quicktime core.
Try to install Current Core Info add-on:
    http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/1271
Go to Tools and choose ‘Show Current Core’ while playing flac file.
You should see message – Current core is GStreamer Simple1

  53. msmith Aug 15, 2008 11:39 am Permalink

Rafael: Can you give an example filename that has this problem? I’ve been able to reproduce the problem with filenames containing diacritics, but files with a % sign work perfectly for me. Also, what platform is this on? Windows or mac? I did this on windows.

Hopefully we can get a fix for this problem before 0.7 final.

  54. Rafael Aug 16, 2008 11:16 am Permalink

    Boris,
    Yes, the message is that.

    msmith,
I was stupid. The problem is not because the CD is called “100%”. It’s because the band’s name is “Grupo Revelação”. So there is a diacritc. I’m sorry.
I’m using Windows XP SP3 Brazilian Portuguese.
Some file names that has problems:
“Legião Urbana – Dois – 06 – Tempo Perdido.flac” [No song of this band will play]
“Caetano Veloso – Araçá Azul – 07 – Sugar Cane Fields Forever.flac” [No song of this album will play]
    “Caetano Veloso – Bicho – 08 – O Leãozinho.flac”

  55. msmith Aug 18, 2008 1:45 pm Permalink

Rafael – Thanks a lot. I think this is fixed now, and it should work right in 0.7 final.
