Songbird 0.6rc3 is now available for download!
If you’re interested, you can also read the release notes which describe improvements and known bugs.
Last week we summarized what we’d appreciate your feedback on in 0.6. Since then we have worked on fixing some bugs that have come in from the community, thanks for sharing your feedback!
As always, please file any issues, bugs, or crashes you find in Bugzilla so that we can address them before 0.6 final!
A note to Mac Users: we’ve noticed that Songbird isn’t stable on 10.5.3. We’ve been working with Mozilla and Apple to identify the problem. You can follow the bugs related to this on Mozilla and also on Songbird (just happens to end in #666).

SubscribeWell, this version crashed while importing my iTunes library and I couldn’t even kill it using kill!
Regardless, this version uses way less CPU usage to play, is able to search and runs very nicely.
Well done!
@koppah
do you mind sharing what platform you’re running songbird on and how large of a library you were importing? we’d really like to explore this further. thanks for the kind compliments, we’re excited about the progress we made in this release! thanks for checking it out and giving us feedback.
Oh, I should’ve read the news post regarding the 10.5.3 compatibility!
Library is 3434 songs.
Let me know if you need any more info, or would like me to do a more thorough trace (though I’m not sure if I could re-produce it!). I think it has something to do with running iTunes after I’ve started the library import process (I have media keys bound and accidentally press them to start my music, thereby launching iTunes).

@koopah
thanks for sharing all the extra info! i would assume the problem you reported is connected to the 10.5.3 issues we’ve noticed. we’re actively exploring why there are stability problems with Songbird on OS X 10.5.3 - our current best thinking is that this will require a fix from Apple but we’re not 100% certain. unfortunately, Firefox, Adium, and Camino users are also in a similar boat… if you’re interested, the best way to keep track of our progress with this issue would be to follow this bug:
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9666
in the meantime, we’ll take another quick look at testing importing on a pre-10.5.3 system to confirm this problem doesn’t exist. thanks again for the headsup!
i will report a bug.
songbird rc3 is not playing hypemachine any more.
i will post here the link from bugzilla
Songbird is super fast now! Finally usable
Thank you for your work.
I stuck a little while loading my 5K library but succed.
It’s much faster and find tool at least works, but shuffle is still not worlking after looking for any song with it.
@Erik ch
Did you get around to filing a bug? If not, can you please elaborate on what’s broken with hypemachine? Thanks!
@sili
Indeed, it’s amazing the difference once release and a few months makes! I’m really proud of the engineers I get to work with at Songbird, they’ve delivered a huge performance update with 0.6! Thanks for noticing - it’s gonna get way better too, there’s more performance improvements planned!
@Mattocaster
Can you elaborate? Are you referring to problems with playback in Shuffle mode or issues with an iPod shuffle? Also, what platform are you on? Thanks for clarifying so we can look into this further.
Update seems a lot quicker, even from rc2.
Not sure if this is a bug or feature.
Was using rc2, and then installed rc3 and it didn’t find/look for my previous profile, it just seemed to do a vanilla install. No problem though, i just re-imported the music.
@cellarmation
In 0.6rc3 the profile directory was changed to Songbird2. If you go to where your profiles are stored on your hard drive (C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data on windows XP) you will still see your original profile in Songbird1.
What you describe is expected behaviour at this point.
Daniel:
Definitely. I’m looking forward for further progress
I’d really like to have an option to play only similar tracks to the current playing track. So if your listening to a Metallica song, check a checkbox (or something similar) and Songbird just plays similar songs (by genre, audioscrobbler, …).
That would be soooo cool
Or does such a functionality already exists for Songbird?
0.6rc3 is a ton better than 0.5 for me, supports my proxy connection now. Thanks!
Mac-PPC-10.5.2-48K tracks
Imports fine only if I don’t load the ipod extension. Otherwise it launches the ipod dialog while still importing and freezes.
Using filters in the Library view gets multiple slow script warnings for tree.js, but works in the end.
It does not shut down cleanly, it has to be killed every time.
FLACs import cleanly, but playback is skippy.
I’ll try to loiter in the IRC room in case anyone has questions.

The same post i did on bugzilla I am writing here.

I am try to play some music from hype machine.
Double clique end leasing.
But I haven’t sucessed
http://hypem.com/
Just double clique, wait, wait wait and nothing.
Is strange that some musics dont play and skip to next.
This problem never show on songbird rc2 and on Firefox 3.0
Has coming on songbird 0.6 rc3
PS:
I put a screenshot
Is there a way to see where a song in the library is located on your harddisk? If not, perhaps the metadata editor would be a good place for it?
@sili
That’s a great suggestion! We definitely intend to support the desired functionality you proposed. While we’re currently very focused on performance improvements and optimizations we’ll explore ways we can implement this sooner than later.
@Underlying Patterns
Thanks for reaching out to us, we’re looking into each of the issues you reported on Mac PPC builds. If we have any questions we’ll try reaching out to you 1:1 to followup. In the meantime, we are aware of Songbird’s performance issues and are currently working through them. While we are finally able to handle large library sizes in 0.6, we still have greater strides to make against them. We haven’t done a ton of testing on PPC builds with library sizes in the range you reported and suspect this might be contributing to the issues you’re seeing. Thanks for your feedback, we’ll see what we can do!
@Erik ch
Thanks for taking the time to file a bug with us, that really helps us track and sort down issues. I’ve just given you 100 imaginary gold points. We’re looking into the bug you reported with the hypemachine, I’m sure you’ll get email the next few days with progress and status on it. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention.
@sili
Hey again! Thanks for another great suggestion. We don’t currently expose a way to get your media files location but we *absolutely* intend to. This has been a popular user request and while it’s not currently being implemented it’s on our ToDo list. We think it would be a nice feature to expose as an option both in context menus in your library/playlist as well as in the Metadata Editor (as you suggested). Thanks for being patient with us as we get around to implementing this, I want it too!!
@sili
You can turn on the “Location” column using the column picker in the Library (it’s above the scrollbar for the bottom pane). It’s not awesome, but it will tell you where the files are.
@Underlying Patterns
If you were running the iTunes Library Importer while you were attempting to use the filtering in the library you would definitely experience slow downs. The Importer may be getting a modal mode soon to speed up the import. It will prevent the user from attempting to use the app while the import is in progress which will definitely help.
aus:
I know, but this is really not satisfying because you can not copy the location from there.
Daniel:
Thanks for your feedback. So I’m looking forward to see the “play similar songs” soon
Another suggestion: When you drag a song from the library *out* of Songbird it should be as you would drag the file out of your file explorer. So you could drag a song from the library directly to a FTP client, instant messaging software, USB stick etc.
24,000 / 240GB files - fast and responsive :). Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved.
Also, thanks for the excellent communication from the dev team.
OK slackers, get back to work.
@sili
We actually currently DO have a way to find a song location on your system.
In Library view there is a ‘column’ icon.
In the Song listing area, click on the ‘column’ icon, then select the location (ensure it is checked).
This will create a column in the song listing which displays where the song is located (if you haven’t downloaded the file yet, this will show a web url).
You will have to resize this column to view the full path to the file(s), but you will see exact location of the file(s).
@sili
hehe, thanks again for your feedback and additional ideas. until we have spare cycles to expose a more streamlined way to access the location for your media in Songbird, for now, the process is a bit more manual (as described by @KDubbs and others.) give us some time to chew through some other higher priority items and we’ll get there.
@MonoApe
Thanks for the kind words on the perf improvements, glad you noticed! The engineering talent at Songbird definitely deserves some mad props this release for making a lot of improvements under the hood. We also owe users like you who provide us with feedback a big thanks. Part of the reason we focused efforts on perf improvements was because users like you let us know you wanted them! Thanks for helping us make Songbird better by providing your feedback, ok, getting back to work on making Songbird even Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.
I have got suggestionitis, I know
@sili
it’s all good, we want to give you the cure! keep ‘em coming. also, feel free to submit them here: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/
Hi, I havn’t been able to get the adioscrobbler plugin working in RC3 is it no longer compatible?
WOAH!
that’s AMAZING!
Guys you’re fucking genius!
congratulations!
Still can’t write the meta data back to file. I am using windows and the filename has chinese character in it.
No link to download from nightly!
@ Anabelle
try my new audioscrobbler plugin, which works with 0.6:

We’d like to look into this further. We’ll contact you via email shortly. Thanks!
@Nicola Nuti
Thanks for the kind words!
@Tim
Not sure I understand, can you elaborate? Appreciate it!
@Necimal
Your add-on rocks.
@Daniel Reffel
What Tim means, is that the link http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Developer/Articles/Builds/Nightly_Builds leads to nowhere…
How can i get the release??
Dear Friend, where is the LINK to Songbird 0.6rc3?
I have found THIS link (http://download.songbirdnest.com/installer/windows/i686-msvc8/Songbird_0.6rc3_windows-i686-msvc8.exe) “googling”…
I do not see the LINK within Songbird web site…
THIS link (http://publicsvn.songbirdnest.com/wiki/Nightly_Builds) takes me to a files empty page…Please, send me an Email if possible:
baden2005@gmail.com
Thanks a lot !!!
@Tim, Ironic, & Paolo
Oops, sorry for my misunderstanding. It’s now fixed, sorry about that! You can access the nightlies page again here:

:))))) thank you
Songbird is amazing. A friend in Austria showed it to me and I am telling all of my friends. I love.
Issue: When I double click a song to play Songbird frequently (90% of the time) plays the song below it. In otherwords, if I want to hear a particular song in my library I need double click the song above it. Then it sits for a second on that song and skips to the next tune. Strange and frustrating. Any ideas?
Here are my basic specs. If you need more feel free to contact me.
