“Remarkable bird, the Songbird, idn’it, ay? Beautiful plumage”
(with apologies to Monty Python for the slight edit… but we have yet to make a Feather called “Norwegian Blue”)
There have been some great sightings of 0.5 so far, so I wanted to call out some of them here:
- Eliot over at Wired has some kind words. While some people (including ourselves) might contest the “stable for years” bit, we loves ya all the same.
. He’s got some great discussion in the comments too. - kbps has some really interesting musings and ideas on the potential for Media Views. yo kbps! We’d love to see some of those ideas turn into Media Views, drop me a line if you have questions or get stuck.
I also wanted to cover a couple of points that I’ve seen people mentioning…
- We realise memory and CPU consumption could use some work. We have a lot of work scheduled for our next 0.6 release targeting performance and optimisation. If you see people mentioning P&O in our blogs and forum posts, that’s what we’re talking about. So yes, it’s our hope that Songbird will be leaner, meaner, and faster…. whether he gets less gassy in the process is still unclear.
- A *lot* of work in 0.5 was building out a brand new Device API. The first consumer of this is the MTP Device Support… unfortunately, the older iPod support needs to be updated to support the new Device API. We are not, and will not be dropping support for iPods – we have ongoing work slated for our 0.6 release to get the iPod Add-on updated to use the new Device API. So stay tuned… when 0.6 comes out (or very shortly after), we’ll have a working iPod Add-on.

Subscribethank you so much for fixing the volume knob. That bothered me how it was always just a notch off.
Now life is complete.
I love Songbird (except that memory comsumption thingie, but I realize this is just 0.5v we’re talking about), and am very looking forward for the next releases. Thanks for all your hard work!
Very good reactions indeed. And I’ve seen quite a few.
Glad to hear, that MTP is in the works. I’d really like to fumble around with it. IPod? Meh… Don’t own one and don’t think I will. Who in these days needs a MP3 player, when he has a mobile? (2GB Micro SD ftw woooo!)
One thing less, that makes a dent in my trouserpockets (No pun intended).
Yepp, the performance needs that work…
atm it’s impossible to handle 17k Songs for me (while winamp does it easyly after a few minutes of scanning)
I’ve given 0.5 a through going over! Just wish it would use less CPU on my PowerMac. Here’s my review

this is a good player lacks a few add-ons. why is that winamp you can click on a link in flock a better firefox that it does not call up song bird. Also what is the madder if you come from yahoo and made their music player that you can not make a plugin that can make songbird useful on their. Last thing you wil need to connect to zunes music store and the i tunes music store to have people looking in to downloading this player cause the man stream windows and mac users have a media player installed and will choose to use it like I did or they will go get the program that works to get the files they want and right now you are not it.
you people have a long road ahead of you to get to version 1.0 hope that some of the noted suggestions come along cause this player then will wipe all other players off the map
