[2008.02.05] Super (Blessed) Tuesday

By mig mig Permalink

Unlike all those unnamed politicos raking in millions of dollars a month just for being themselves, we couldn’t afford to lavish a full whistle-stop tour on a simple blessing of a 0.5pre build.

But the non-partisan mascots are happy to roll it out on a handcar, working together but in opposite directions:

[2008.02.05] Nightly Build

http://publicsvn.songbirdnest.com/wiki/Nightly_Builds

And now we also have a place to host our Nightly-built Add-Ons:

Want to know what’s actually in the blessing? Read on!

So, the biggest thing we have to show off is the beginnings of our APIs to allow developers to create new ways to visualize and render your Library.

For instance, Matt built a slick little Tag Cloud extension:

TagCloudPage

http://dingo.songbirdnest.com/~matt/mediapage.xpi

After you install it and restart, click on the button on the far right of the browser toolbar, it should list the Pages available:

Page Switcher

It’s still being polished, and please don’t submit any bugs about it, but we think it’s pretty slick and we’re hoping you’ll agree wholeheartedly!

ps: There’s also another refresh of the iPod code, you can get the newest from the Nightly Add-Ons folders. And pretty soon one of these blessings’ll have MTP device support under Windows for all you folks who wrote in asking for it…

Poor me, the Tag Cloud doesn’t work for me. Anyway, I think it is cool that you add these special points for addon makers. Being able to switch easily between addons works great with the display panes; I guess this will work pretty much the same. Just get rid of that huge button!

What’s wrong with the switcher button? Where would you rather see it hosted?

will this build be one that actually uses autoupdate to update itself to the next build (like firefox/minefield)?

That would interest me, too. Why aren’t Songbird nightly’s updating?

Because it’s enough automated work to just put them up there, and we assume that people downloading nightlies don’t want to be bothered EVERY TIME they run the app to go upgrade again.

I think QA is coming up with some userscripts to be able to set a cronjob to update your Songbird from our servers, daily.
