Build environment update

Yay, we’re getting with the times! Well, sort of. We’ve finally reached the end of what we’re capable of doing with Visual Studio 2003 (VC71). The new Device/MTP support that’s going into 0.5 makes use of shiny whizzy new SDKs that are provided by the Visual Studio 2005 (VC8) compilers.

This weekend the Birders are going to be hard at work updating all the build environment stuff to get things up to date and building with Visual Studio 2005.

Starting Tuesday morning, those of you still on VC71 are going to have to get with the times and start using a… 3 year old compiler. ;-) (We’ve looked at making the jump straight to VC9 – but a lot of stuff is b0rken, and we unfortunately don’t have the time to get all that stuff working. We’re looking into it though and will definitely address it in the future). Apologies for any interruption in service those of you building the bird at home will encounter – but this is all in the interest of providing broader device support and hey… a 3 year old compiler is better than a 5 year old one, n’est pas?

Any idea when will MTP support be available for testing in the nightly build? I have a Sansa Connect and given Yahoo’s recent announcements about handing off Yahoo Music Unlimited to Real I’m looking at alternatives. I’m currently using Songbird/0.5pre (20080205013904) (2008012812).

Today’s nightly should have some, tomorrow’s should have more.

    Monday’s should be pretty good.
