This was mentioned in our Firefox extension porting guide, but it appears enough people are hitting it that it’s worth a wider publishing.
Due to the way Songbird is drawn as a frame-less window, we make portions of the app draggable so the user can move the window around. Unfortunately, this currently extends to the status bar - meaning extensions that add icons to the status bar don’t get mousethrough events passed to them. You may have noticed this if you have an element using onclick or ondblclick (or any other capture events) in your <statusbarpanel> element that doesn’t seem to respond to your clicks.
The workaround is, fortunately, very simple. Just add the mousethrough=”never” attribute to your element, e.g.:
<statusbar>
<statusbarpanel>
<image id="foo"
src="chrome://foo/skin/bar.png"
onclick="alert('yay!');"
mousethrough="never" />
</statusbarpanel>
</statusbar>
Apologies for the inconvenience… we’ll try to see how we can address this in a future release - but for now, this should get you up and running!

Songbird is hosting a Songbird DevCamp this weekend January 19th & 20th at our office in San Francisco.
If you’re hacking on the Top 40, or are just interested in hacking on Songbird stuff in general and want a room full of like-minded people to hang out, eat, and drink with - then you’re invited!
Sat & Sun, 10a to 5pm. We’ll bring the building, power, wi-fi, food, drinks, and beer…. you bring the brains and a laptop.
In other top 40 news, check out the progress! We’ve got 11 completed, and 6 more in testing. I love that extension developers are picking things up, popping into the IRC channel, asking questions, and getting involved. The # of people in #songbird has grown by quite a lot recently.

A while back I blogged about the ability to use external urls for feathers and posted my experiment. Lo and behold, a Background add-on has been created to help you do this without having to write a single line of code. Thanks NeoAlchemy, I hope you enjoy your Songbird t-shirt!
Meanwhile, crickets for feedback on the lastest update of the add-ons section of the ‘nest… I can’t believe you are all so easily satiated!

While the Top 40 continues, I wanted to get an idea of how everyone likes the latest update to Addons.songbirdnest.com. We’ve been working on a more thorough .xpi validator on the server, and while we’re getting great feedback from the Top 40 for the bird, I have yet to see feedback for the website.

All the numbers are going up up up…
Between the completed, and in testing extensions (meaning most if not all features are working, just more testing and uploading are needed before being deemed complete) - we’ve got 14 down, with an additional 15 more being claimed or in active development. This leaves 16 left that are open and unclaimed.
The mathematically astute among you will probably note that those numbers add up to 45. Yes, the top 40 have grown to 45 with enough demand and requests to port additional extensions.
The newly completed extensions are the allmusic.com toolbar, FaviconizeTab, FlashGot, ScribeFire, and User Agent Switcher.
