Kicking off the Top 40

We’re ringing in the New Year by kicking off a project for the month of January called the Songbird Top 40. This is an effort to port and update the 40 most frequently requested Firefox extensions to also support the Songbird player.

http://songbirdnest.com/top40

Short and sweet URL. Check it out - if you see any extensions you want to work on or help port, drop me an email at (stevel at songbirdnest dot com). I’ll be updating the list daily with status and updates as people chip in to help hack on stuff.

We’re going to be hosting a Songbird DevCamp at our nest here in SF, and anyone working on the Top 40 project is hereby invited (Facebook, Upcoming).

If you’re a Songbird fan and want to contribute, join the project! Check out the Top 40 project page, shoot me an email with which ones you want to help work on, and we’ll get you hooked up with an invite to the DevCamp, and put you in the running for some prize schwag.

Oh yeah. Did I mention there are prizes? ;-)

… and yes, the mathematically astute amongst you will undoubtedly notice there are 42 listed.

Hahaha…nice, stevel. If you type “the answer to life, the universe, and everything” into google, it comes back with the built-in “Calculator” and 42. I’d love to help out porting some extensions…but it says “Development Under active development by the owner(s)” and I don’t own any of those. Should I go ahead and port one or not? Like I said…I’d love to go ahead and try to help, but I’m not positive what all needs translated from FF to Songbird, and what it translates to. I can probably figure it out, but if I’m not supposed because I’m not an owner of those extensions…ouch. Also…I’m not sure all of these would really help Songbird. I don’t perceive it as designed to be a browser…it’s not just a musically gifted Firefox. It’s so much more…but in a completely different way.

Definitely go for it. If you’re not one of the owners/developers, doesn’t matter - let me know which one you’re working on and I’ll update the table accordingly.
