So we got all our unpleasant crossplatform issues somewhat worked out. The app seems much more stable on Mac and Linux, now, which is certainly better than the last time we went for blessings.
On the Mac, there’s still this one issue where bringing up any non-modal dialogs (like the Jump-to) or switching skins or windows (like to Miniplayer) will cause the app to crash — so be careful of that as you go.
And test test test! If we’re the only ones filing bugs, this whole 0.3 thing is going to take forever. We need YOUR help to get done!

Unfortunately, we’re having extended issues with our Mac and Linux builds, so we’re only putting our seal of approval on this morning’s Win32 Nightly.
Hopefully we’ll figure out our crossplatform worries soon, but we had to decide that the other 80% of our userbase deserves to be told there’s a build worth trying and posting bugs against.
Things to gaze upon in wonderment:
- Brand New Feathers (sans Repeat/Shuffle buttons).
- Final 0.8.6c VLC version.
- Drag and drop tracks from the internet to your library automatically downloads to your library.
- Playback media on websites requiring HTTP Authentication.
- Playback files served by scripts (that don’t end in a media extension).
- Column picker on the Filter columns to allow you to change your filters (filter by Composer, Genre, whatever).
- Better support for huge (15000+ tracks) libraries.
- YouTube videos scraped from webpages.
- Over 200 Bugs!
And remember: Bugzilla is your friend. Love it, squeeze it, touch it.

Over the past two weeks, the Nestbuilders have been busy upgrading our server infrastructure. We’ve set up a number of new servers, and have been gradually moving our web applications to new homes . Our translation site and addons site are now running on new machines. We’ve added a few tweaks to the underside of these sites which will make it easier for us to roll out new features in the future.
Bugzilla has been moved to a much better server, and has been upgraded to Bugzilla 3.0. There have been a few hiccups, and there may be a few more, but for the most part the server upgrades have gone smoothly. Please let us know if you run into any issues, and thanks for hanging in there if you’ve experienced any problems!

In our efforts to improve Songbird’s user-experience, we continually revisit and refine our interfaces to provide the levels of quality you’d expect from a consumer-grade piece of software. Spend too much time designing an single interface and eventually you become numb to its idiosyncrasies. Let it cool and revisit it with a fresh perspective, research, and seek other opinions in the meantime. Each release is an opportunity to refine both visual and interaction design elements.
On the visual design front, we’re continuing to refine the visual design of our flagship feathers, Rubberducky, with new controls, better legibility and contrast, and a new sleeker faceplate.
