XULRunner apps, meet the Mozilla build system

By ben ben

The Mozilla build system is big, complicated, and sparsely documented. There are only a few folks that are actively working on it to my knowledge. As bsmedberg pointed out, however, the build system is also quite powerful and has had a ton of bugs worked out of it over the years. Unfortunately for most XULRunner developers it’s also off limits unless you feel like jumping in and hacking it yourself. It builds Firefox, Thunderbird, XULRunner, and other Mozilla-hosted apps and extensions happily, but what about XULMine? Other XULRunner apps? Songbird?

Well, the build system underwent a substantial change last week. (more…)

Twigs For The New Nest

By jkoshi jkoshi

Menu Trails

The good folks over at Chapter Three have been helping us build a better nest for the bird watchers. And in the spirit of our project, and open-source projects everywhere, they will be releasing to the public, Drupal features designed and built for Songbirdnest. Josh has posted the first of these that he’s calling Menu Trails.

Meanwhile, we’ll be gathering more twigs for the new nest. If you want us to let you know when it’s ready, subscribe to Songbird Email on the right –>.

Taper Section

By jkoshi jkoshi

Taperbird

While the cassette has long since become the champion of the land-fill, being a taper is still alive and well. I suppose it isn’t on tape anymore but a “show-ripper” just doesn’t sound as nice, and “documentarian-audiophile” isn’t even made of real words. The ‘heads call ‘em tapers, and so shall we. Speaking of tapes and the Dead, take your Songbird to The Dead Show for shows and podcasts airing on KOPN 89.5 in the great state of Missouri.

At Dead.net, you can find a great Taper Section. From Dead.net, “In this space, every Monday, you will find information on the recorded history of the Grateful Dead’s music as it pertains to that week…Check back weekly for new entries and insight into the vault, as well as exclusive audio clips relating to that week in the Grateful Dead’s recorded history.” Take Songbird to the Taper Section, make a subscription and take it to go.

And to all the DIY tapers covering the shows out there, thank you it’s always fun to run across a recording of a show you loved.

New public subversion server

By Georges Auberger Georges Auberger

Public SVN is ready!

Our public subversion repository has been upgraded and moved to a new home. It should be more responsive and more current. If you’re building Songbird from source, you will now track updates from our developers in near realtime.

Public SVN is up!

The team has been busy preparing for the release of version 0.3. This is a good time to do a fresh check out and see for yourself. The api documentation has been updated as well.

Musical Desks

By jkoshi jkoshi

We’ve rearranged our desks to optimize the number of birders we can fit in the nest, and just in time — we’re trying to make space for at least 8 new people. Our international birder lonedfx is also in town for a couple of weeks so we’ve got a full nest.

Rearranged

Why the musical desks? Just in case you missed the memo, Songbird is hiring! If you’re interested in working on the coolest digital media project this side of the Mississippi, check the Jobs page to see what you can help us do.

If you’re interested, or know someone who is, contact our Director of Operations, Jack Leidlein (jobs@songbirdnest.com) for more information.
