Assaulted by the spam filter

By ronen ronen Permalink

A few users have commented in the blog and forum that they keep getting bit by our spam filter no matter how many times they submit. Friends, this spam filter is still a young pup and is very bitey. What more, submitting any content multiple times will definitely get it flagged as spam. Thus, it will sit in the approval queue and gather dust until I teach the filter when to sit and when to bite.

It’s getting there. It once disliked all of mig’s comments, and seriously – we love mig. But it’s learned. Currently it lets him post comments and only gives me a little ‘mark as spam ?’ question mark next to it. I tell it that it was a good ..er, boy and remind it that there’s no need to even growl.

So again, we’re happy to read your posts as long as they’re not flame bait, trolls, or masked ads for viagra. If you get a message saying that your post has been flagged as potential spam don’t take it personally. And don’t resubmit it, plz.

Both comments and trackbacks are currently closed.

Yeah, I’d been getting marked as ‘spam’ before. But my comments would show up in a few hours/days.

OK, so this is completely off topic, but far off is Songbird to a Linux release?

I was so impatient, I got it working under WINE. Actually, it works quite nicely, but it can’t connect to the internet and playing music is laggy.

Anyway, can’t wait. Songbird already trumps iTunes and it’s only on v0.1! Excellent work.

Heh – your comments showed up in a few hours after a pair of human eyeballs (most likely me) examined them and marked them as ‘not spam’. I’m going to be much happier when the filter has learned enough to cut down on the amount of manual approvals.

As for Linux and Mac versions, those are coming real soon. Check out the development roadmap.

    Thanks for the nice feedback.

Hi, I posted my first post here today and got the warning I possibly had posted spam, I didn’t care more about it since it also said someone would look in to it. But at the next post I got the message “Your IP is banned from the forum becaouse of spam” or something like that “contact administrator for questions”… your litle guard dog is kind of harsh. (My english isn’t to good, but I hope you understand me)

Sorry about that, but you did post the comment multiple times. Let me know if you’re still blacklisted.

i don’t think that you people are very mac friendly yet. i still can’t sign up for the announcement list and there isn’t a way that i’m going to be compiling a visual c++ project with any of the tools in xcode. i think that some of us would be happy with a bit of buggy source or cvs to play with, just so long as we can run it a bit more under our operating system of choice. i’m compiling xmms right now because i’m ready to kill itunes.

keep up the good work though. looks nice on my win box (though i was thinking of trying to get it to use my firefox profile instead of making its own)

Hah. It marks admins with spam?

  7. ronen Feb 13, 2006 9:15 pm Permalink

    Not the brightest implementation.
It pays no attention to who is posting and rather only looks at tokens, ads up their probability and over a certain threshold brings down the hammer.

‘mig’ is a hot token baby. Appears regularly, never been marked as spam. Immaculate credentials.

I told Aus that I’ve had to manually tweaked a few tokens because personally I think ‘general’ to be less indicative of spam than ‘voyeur’. In our context at least :D

Hey, the source code is available at http://developer.songbirdnest.com/source

As for Mac friendly – first, our Mac port is being done by Josh Aas of Camino fame (the MacOS port of Firefox). Second, we have about as many Apple laptops (can’t just call them ‘powerbooks’ any more, eh?) in the office as Winboxes, and a cute cube on which we do QA. Look closely at the image in our About page.

No problem, you guys are great.

The development roadmap suggests some good stuff- an update system, CSS skins, WMDM and other device stuff. Excellent.

What do you mean by ‘browser encapsulation’? Are you referring to Songbird in Firefox or Firefox in Songbird? (or something else?)

Anyway, one thing that I keep forgetting is that I can’t open tabs in Songbird like I can in Firefox!

That would be great, if it can be included as a feature.

I’m going to check out the source code now.

Once again, keep up the great work.

I use this more than WinAmp for my music because the randomization seems to pick better, more obscure songs. Good going on that!

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but it doesn’t play .m4a files, it needs tabs, bookmarks, adblock, and all that firefox jazz, it would be nice if it played videos, supported videoblog sites (like Google Video, YouTube, and iFilm), crunched metadata less like George Bush eating pretzels, and stays under 10 MB.

    Heh. Good luck!

I’m looking forward to seeing Songbird gain some wings!

I got a message saying my IP address was banned for posting spam to the site. I realize the spam filter is very sensitive right now, so i tried to email you getting my IP unbanned. But everytime I sent you an email, I got the Delivery Failure notice in my inbox. I’m only posting here in hopes that have already unbanned my IP address. But I am still wondering why the email wwould not go through. I sent it to support@songbirdnest.com (and once to a support@songbird.com by accident. Got a response wanting to know wtf I was talking about). Thank you.

You can email me at support@songbirdnest.com (BTW – thanks for pointing out that there is no such email… I just set it up :) ). I’ll need your IP address so I can manually remove you from the blacklist.

Uhm, the randomizer is a really bad random number generator that likes to play the same tracks too much. That, too, will be fixed someday.

I checked the IP you sent me and it doesn’t seem like you are blacklisted any more.

Just email me again if you get another message saying that you are the next time you post a comment.

it must be doing something right…but maybe that’s just because I have close to 6,500 songs?

    Whodathunkit.
